Pairing up and testing, £17m running figure

330

The search to resolve our defensive problems this season stretch back before the departure of Virgil van Dijk in August. Dedryck Boyata and Efe Ambrose have struggled with form, which our big summer signing, Jozo Simunovic, has endured two lengthy injury lay-offs.

Defensive stats have been revolutionised since the January arrival of Erik Sviatchenk, who was voted the Danish Superliga’s Player of the Year last night. We have achieved six clean-sheets in his nine starts, losing only a solitary goal each game the defence was breached. It took 20 games to record six clean-sheets before the Dane arrived.

We are far from the finished article at the back. The clean-sheets mask perennial failures to defend corner kicks, which have recently resulted good chances, instead of goals conceded. But, progress has been clear. Jozo’s been out of the team since the week before Erik’s arrival.

One of the things we need between now and the end of the season is these two paired up and tested. You win things (and qualify for things) when you stop conceding goals.

I remember the days I’d pour over Oldco Rangers’ accounts for insights into the future and comparisons with our own business model. I’d a cursory look at The Rangers Football Club’s accounts this morning. There is little of comparative relevance for us, or indeed, probably for Newco’s short-term future, should they gain promotion this season.

The one area that offers comparison is the cost of running a football business in a stadium which occasionally caters for crowds of 50,000 or more. With first team wages (I assume this refers to professional players employed) stripped out, expenses during the paired-down Easdale-led season was just north of £17m.

This is a useful guide of what it costs to pay your rates, electricity , insurance and the million other bills when you need to occasionally cater for 50,000-ish crowds, although many costs, like police, will reflect a lower tariff due to the lack of actual footfall. We don’t get as clear a picture of this cost from Celtic, who don’t separate player wages from non-playing staff. My hunch is that Celtic’s paried-down figure will be a few million higher (the silver polish bill alone….).

    The ‘squirrel’ clique are NUTS!!!

    ========

Now that is an interesting topic. :)

I would contend though that it’s not a clique -it’s all of us. It’s universal.

We all make things up by giving anything we see or hear a meaning. Your point about making things up to suit our experience to date is I believe true in most cases.

I’ve thought since the season of honest mistakes our game was bent so I tend to look at what I see or hear through that prism.

However I am aware of it so I’ve involved others to bring their own perspectives in order to try and achieve some balance.

The thing is we can only present to others our thinking up to the latest point in time and the truth is there is no latest point just the universe, by design or by accident, stopping everything happening all at once.

So what was thought to be true “then” can stop being so “now”.

In such an ever changing and evolving environment I think it is best not to consider anything as fact and hold on to it grimly, but at best the latest best guess based on what each of us know. (whilst recognising the limits of our knowledge)

Perhaps we are in some metaphysical Hydron Collider (TBB knows about dem) from which Reality emerges at some critical mass point as a result of ideas and meanings smashing into each other like frenzied atoms, from which Reality emerges in a ball of light?

(I blame international week for speeding up such idea and meaning collisions)

  3. Quonno.

I can confirm it is true.

The Grand Master was made to look like the small miknded bigot he is. The report cites protestants felt intimidated by others discussing GAA .

Having a mass card for a deceased relative on their desk or telling colleagues about their childs confirmation/first communion!!

Ignoring the fact that the Civil Service is robust in its equality practices.

It was quoted to him that the higher echelons of the public service were still disproportionately protestant. He was then asked if thought there should be more catholics in seniority and he said that that matter was “historical”.

This report took two years to compile and was basd on interviews with family of OO members.

These people do not want equality and are still wed to the notion of a protestant supremacy and control of this toxic little statelet !!

Correct, that should be a minimum expectation. The difficulty is getting highly paid individuals used to previous regimes buying into your ethos.

Pochettino had a poor start to the season. His team selections are consistently inconsistent .

He changes his full backs weekly as the ground they cover is paramount importance to the team.

International fullbacks sit on the bench every week. Freedom of space for midfielders. Lots of movement.

The Watford & Bournemouth managers have recently praised Spurs as the most impressive team they’ve met.

Youth throughout the team. Townsend, now with Newcastle was the next big thing down south a couple of years ago. The Spurs fans were raging when he dropped him. Not now.

    His work rate was questionable.

The management malarkey is handsomely paid (with most club’s) but difficult to implement successfully. Getting the pampered millionaires on board is the hardest part. HH

I think it’s vital we get to the bottom of this issue.

Are you saying that Jamesgang and CowieBhoy are a pair of Tits, which one is the right Tit?

Surely neither is a Great Tit, but is one a Blue Tit?

One may well be a Coal Tit!

I have always had my suspicions.

    Vital questions to be answered.

There is a post on SFM by Reiver.

He is the lad who organised a petition which was forwarded to UEFA.

He followed up his initiative by speaking on the phone to a lady at UEFA.

Not only did she inform him that there was not trace of his correspondence, even though it was signed for, but that all communications from individuals and not from clubs, were put into an ever increasing bundle; probably never to see the light of day.

It would appear that UEFA’s policy is the same as the SFA, i.e., they only communicate through the clubs.

If that is the case, why are Celtic advising shareholders to make direct contact with UEFA?

In case I have misrepresented Reiver’s post, I suggest that anyone interested pays a visit to SFM and make up their own mind.

  8. What with Auldheid and BRTH both making comical posts within minutes of one another … have the Res 12-ers just had their morning dose of meds … ?

    Re Resolution 12

If it is the case that UEFA will only consider approaches from clubs and not from groups of shareholders/supporters, as you say. why is our board advising that Resolution 12 be progressed by shareholders indeed?

I have great administration for the gallant work done on our behalf by Auldheid, Canamalar, Morrisey, BRTH and the other proponents of the resolution and hope that all their hours of work will not be in vain because someone knew and did not speak out that UEFA would not respond.

It may be that we have to consider going down the path of a judicial review. Hail, hail

BRTH, everyone likes a good Boob joke.

DesertBhoy, yeah, but is it not another part of the anatomy that refers to?

  18. Ger57. There is indeed lots of corruption and dodgy practices everywhere. Putting to one side your general tenor (which was to say stop breathing cos every breath hurts someone) there is however something far more sinister in a fixed sport. Sporting integrity ( whilst a bastardised word in scotland) is essential for the sport to exist in itself.

That’s has died in Scotland and I am afraid Celtic are party to it.
