Partick Thistle 0-5 Celtic

294

Celtic blew Partick Thistle away this evening with a virtuoso performance, which really needed to be seen to be appreciated.  They passed perfectly on the Partick pitch and should have been ahead before Leigh Griffiths got the party going with an 18th minute penalty.

By that time, Emilio Izaguirre hit the post and Tomas Cerny made a fine save from Patrick Roberts.  Thistle defender Callum Booth tried to stop Roberts but mistimed his tackle to concede the penalty.

Griffiths was on fire in the first half and beat three players inside the box before crossing for Tom Rogic, who lunged to make a slight contact on the ball, but it was enough to knock it against the inside of the post.  Firhill held its collective breath as the ball ran along the line before turning inside the net at the opposite post.

Leigh then setup Callum McGregor but Cerny saved again.  Thistle were struggling to get onto the ball but Lindsey should have done better with a header from an Erskine cross but the ball landed in Craig Gordon’s arms.

Goal of the night game three minutes before the break.  James Forrest cutback for Roberts, who fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.
Thistle probably thought they were passed the worst but Callum McGregor got his customary goal on 82 minutes when his shot from the edge of the box hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced half a meter over the line and out, but the assistant referee correctly indicated the goal.

Tom Rogic was clean through with the keeper to beat twice late in the game, but substitute Thistle goalie, Ridgers.  Tom couldn’t get enough on his header but the Thistle defence gave possession to Patrick Roberts on a plate.  The England Youth international jinked before curling a memorable goal beyond the despairing keeper.

Quick off the mark tonight Paul67, should you not be taking it easy for Sunday?

I have a good feeling about the CL, this team are good enough to qualify without a heart attack for the support, tho we may have a wee flutter along the way mind you :-)

Aye, it’s up to the boy and Pep, so it’s up to the boy at the end of the day. Pep has money to burn, he won’t rate Paddy imo, so it’s Paddy’s decision and his Ma want’s him to be a Celtic player, if it’s about money we have no chance, I suppose it’s about the relationship we have with City.

  3. For a very young player Pàdraig Mag Roibeard handled that interview very well. I think he will happily come back to us.

    Pedro: Get it sorted.

Delaneys Dunky/Twists n Turns: Eternally grateful for your kindness in facilitating myself & Dr Marc on Sunday. I think it will be my best day in Paradise. Ever.

Testosterone furled disappointment, every leader needs to know how to deal with that

It was foolish by Griffiths. A public show of dissent

it was clever by Brendan, a public show of forgiveness.

I would imagine in private Brendan will let him have it with both barrels

That said Leigh is a good lad, I hope he plays for Celtic for the rest of his career

How Dembele missed that penalty in Barcelona

  7. Even before his first goal I thought that was the best Roberts performance since the tail end of last season / start of this season before his injury. I actually think he has been one of the few disappointments this year purely because of the high expectations I had for him. I thought he was a shoo in for POTY, but Forrest kept him out the team for long periods. He’s clearly improved though, he’s working harder, and he’s learned that taking a defender on the outside more often will open up the cutback onto his wand of a left foot.

The problem going forward however, is Celtic have to plan for him not being here. Do they wait until his future is determined by City and risk missing out on their main targets? It’s easy to say yes but the players we will have heavily scouted may be snapped up by other clubs and we end up with no one. Would he rather play in the English Premier League than come back to Scotland? There are no guarantees of CL group stages, though we are better placed than ever to do so. If we somehow manage to sign him the first thing I’d do is pay Ciftci’s contract up to free up the number 7. If ever a player could handle and thrive under the weight of that jersey it is Paddy. Joy to watch, and a perfect compliment to our front 3. Sinclair / Dembele / Roberts, is as close to Neymar / Suarez / Messi as we may ever hope to get.

If you are entitled to invade the Firhill pitch following a 2-1 win, what does a 5-0 victory entitle you to do?

  9. Eric got a game into his limbs.

    Gamboa and Izzy also.

James had a wee run out.

    Tom had 90 minutes.

Nir appeared for a wee cameo.

It looks like the plan has come together to have everyone honed and hungry for next week’s climax? Or should it be climaxes?

Well done to our management team.

So happy with tonights performance, so much to admire about this team you wouldn’t know where to start. A wee word for Izzy and Gamboa, both so reliable and have wonderful attitudes. Wee Jamsie was good too. As for Paddy Roberts, simply stunning, such a joy for us to see!
