Partick Thistle 0-5 Celtic

294

Celtic blew Partick Thistle away this evening with a virtuoso performance, which really needed to be seen to be appreciated.  They passed perfectly on the Partick pitch and should have been ahead before Leigh Griffiths got the party going with an 18th minute penalty.

By that time, Emilio Izaguirre hit the post and Tomas Cerny made a fine save from Patrick Roberts.  Thistle defender Callum Booth tried to stop Roberts but mistimed his tackle to concede the penalty.

Griffiths was on fire in the first half and beat three players inside the box before crossing for Tom Rogic, who lunged to make a slight contact on the ball, but it was enough to knock it against the inside of the post.  Firhill held its collective breath as the ball ran along the line before turning inside the net at the opposite post.

Leigh then setup Callum McGregor but Cerny saved again.  Thistle were struggling to get onto the ball but Lindsey should have done better with a header from an Erskine cross but the ball landed in Craig Gordon’s arms.

Goal of the night game three minutes before the break.  James Forrest cutback for Roberts, who fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards.
Thistle probably thought they were passed the worst but Callum McGregor got his customary goal on 82 minutes when his shot from the edge of the box hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced half a meter over the line and out, but the assistant referee correctly indicated the goal.

Tom Rogic was clean through with the keeper to beat twice late in the game, but substitute Thistle goalie, Ridgers.  Tom couldn’t get enough on his header but the Thistle defence gave possession to Patrick Roberts on a plate.  The England Youth international jinked before curling a memorable goal beyond the despairing keeper.

The four goals from open play were simply superb. I don’t think Thistle were even up the pitch in the segment shown.

Just 2 more sleeps befoer our Heroes become Legends, breaking record after record. A 2-2- draw will break most of them. A win, scoring 2 or more, could break the lot.

  10. Oh and what is it with us scoring 5 goals in Glasgow Derbys? Becoming a fairly regular occurence now.

Off to collect a package at PO – tickets for final I hope

Still thrilled by last night. As a demonstration of pure football last night was the best I have seen from us this season. Watching the movement of all the players – including Craig Gordon- was superb. Callum McGregor has not always impressed me but last night he was brilliant and wee James and Izzy were as effective as KT and Sinky would have been.

Ah well only 53 hours until I see these Bhoys again.

  15. A great exhibition of total football. Quality passing and movement throughout the team .

Starting off with Craig “Beckenbauer” Gordon the Bhoys passed the Jags to death.

I liked another immaculate perfomance from Gamboa . McGregor and Roberts both stand-outs . Only Rogic not quite back to his dymanic early season form yet. And 4 first picks sitting it out too.

Deila said he was going to get Celtic playing like this but for whatever reason he couldnt do it.

One more season with us could take Paddy to a level close to the Man City team, here’s hoping.

As for the team, the best I’ve seen in my lifetime. Absolutely relentless. 4 draws so far over the League campaign, 3 of those required last minute equalisers (including one shocking dive at Ross County) by the opposition, the other was directly after a title party at Tynecastle.

As for Leigh, I think we are a more fluent team with him as opppsed to Moussa. I would like to see some stats for goals per game comparing when either starts. Putting goal scoring to one side, i think Leigh creates more chances, his movement is better and his set peice delivery is incredible.

  17. thetimreaper

You would imagine that Pep is under serious pressure to deliver success next season. That to me would indicate that success needs to be bought, therefore I don’t think Paddy will get much of a look in. I reckon offers would be considered. Are Celtic rich enough though?

  18. Buying Paddy Roberts has to be an option, and price shouldn’t be a deterrent. if we could get him for a reasonable transfer fee and a guaranteed percentage of a sell on fee – might be worth more than City might get from another english team in the long run. If we could get him on a 4 year deal, with the guarantee to Paddy that we would let him move on after a couple of years ( if he still wanted to ) if the price was right, then it’s a no-brainer. I’d rather have him for another couple of seasons than lose him altogether now.

    Get it done Celtic.

one other thing – and this might be a little unpopular, but…..Reggie. why don’t we cut him a break ? I don’t think he’s a troll, but i might be wrong. He has opinions on some things which are different to the mainstream views on here, but we have other guys posting here like that who aren’t vilified and chased the way he has been. Surely we can display a little bit of tolerance, and accept that not everyone has the same views, perspective, etc. Differences of opinion can stimulate healthy ( and sometimes unhealthy ) debate, and sometimes, this place can be very flat and quiet……

    just saying…..

    Good lad re the beers!

Re Paddy,I think he has three years left on his contract. Like you,I don’t think Pep is the experimenting with youth type. (Though under him,Messi-AGED 21!-went from a goal every three matches to better than a goal a game.)

I like to think that Man City decide to get their money back on him, perhaps with a sell-on clause. And that Paddy likes it here enough to accept our wage structure plus a sell-on clause.

Either way,he is a pleasure to watch. And has been pretty much all of his time with us.

I’m not sure if Ryan Christie will be allowed to take his place in The Aberdeen team that will face Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final but it would be a class act by Celtic if they gave Aberdeen the nod to field him if he merits the jersey.

I hope he plays against us. I then hope, irregardless of the score, that he then comes back to us and fights for his place. There is a player in him.

  29. A Stor Mha Chroi

I hope he doesn’t play…because there certainly is a player in him.

I think there’s a snowball’s chance on Celtic letting him play – it be bad management to allow it (IMO).

    I’m not sure it’s in Celtic’s gift,but I agree on all points.

Mibbe test the water by telling Aberdeen and the SFA that we have no problem with the idea, but also best to run it past Ryan himself first.
