    Birthday Bhoy John Clark

By: Joe Sullivan on 13 Mar, 2016 11:01

LISBON LION, John Clark celebrates his 75th birthday today, Sunday, March 13 and it goes without saying that everyone here at Celtic Park wishes him many happy returns.

*One of the hardest mhen at Parkheid, tough as nails in the “they shall not pass” mode, IMHO he made Big Billy the player he was, prior tae Luggy partnering him he was a wee bit too nice of a player.

I can recall sitting in my wee room up the Haldane listening tae my tranny for the score of the replay at Easter Road, 1-0 tae the good ghuys aet with 19 year old John scoring the winner. At St Pats the next day it was Who!!!, he was only in the side as club captain Bertie Peacock was injured and few of us had ever heard of him.

In true Bob Kelly Corinthian fashion he kept his place in the side until the end of the season, 11 games including the SC Final and Replay eventually losing his place the following season to the more experienced Billy Price who had been signed that summer in all probability to replace Bertie who never donned the hoops again.

My da always believed that not bringing Bertie back intae the side when fit was the catalyst that cost us the Scottish Cup that season, and the bleak 4 years that followed, especially with Jim Kennedy missing the replay with appendicitis being replaced by debutant Willie O’Neill while Bertie was captaining the black north that same evening.

Interesting to note here that the “Brush” was signed fae Larkhall Thistle while Billy was born in Tarbolton. Hmmmm as someone on here would say. Billy would eventually lose his place to the “President” who had lost his full back slot to a young converted centre half fae Wishaw.

John disappeared from the side for a while and only re-emerged when John McNamee who had replaced Paddy Crerand in the side was dropped for disciplinary reasons off the park and arguing with Frank Haffey on it, big Crazy Horse had a history of this having had words with both Paddy Crerand and big Billy on the park.

After breaking his ankle in a Glasgow Cup tie a young John Fallon replaced Frank and the “Celtic Song” was now created “….Fallon Young and Gemmell, Clark McNeill and Kennedy…” with big Frank being the crooner of it.

John remained at right half for the 63/64 season and had the ignominy of missing a penalty against MTK at Parkheid in our 3-0 victory, didnae seem a big deal at the time until fate in the guise of Sir Bob stepped in.

He was in and out of the side the next season sometimes losing his right half position to Jim Brogan, who would replace him eventually, with Willie O’Neil taking over from Jim Kennedy on the other side of the half back line.

History will tell us that the genius of Jock in converting Bobby tae a world renowned right half forced him tae convert John tae the left half position, not so as James Edward had already tried Bobby there late ’64. In fact it was Jim Brogan who lost out when Chopper moved back with John already in position beside Billy.

I can recall the Friday night before the Cup Final when the Times had the headline “Celtic go with the G Men” meaning that Tommy Gemmell and Charlie Gallagher were in the side at the expense of fan favourites Jinky and the President.

The Big Cup and honest NIAR side was now taking shape.

I mentioned a week or so back that one of the Lions lived in Ireland for a while, forgot to mention who. It was John Clark, when his father passed away seemingly his mother moved back to the mother country for a while taking John with him.

John I believe now lives in Balmaha a favourite picnic spot for the maternal side of my family and has been known tae celebrate his faith down in my old parish of St. Kessogs, pre-reformation patron saint of Scotland.

John Clark the mhan that epitomises the saying “Once a Celt”.

  2. Pat Nevin didn`t live in West Belfast or Derry before the “troubles” (euphemism) started.

    How`s that for diversity?

I also enjoyed the game, I very rarely watch a full game if Celtic aren’t involved, Roma, Arsenal & Leverkusen all on other channels but the league cup had my full attention, wanted the Hibees then wanted Ross County (Delanys Dunky hope you all enjoyed today) it’s pretty strange watching a game with no emotional attachment and not caring who wins…..

6 different winners of the league cup in 6 years……sometimes our game should be talked up instead of the easy way out

  4. John Clark

Good memories there especially the replay at Easter Road. We weren`t supposed to beat a Hbsi side that included Johnny McLeod and Joe Baker.

  5. Gerry –

I invested a whoppint 3 quid on Hibs before kick off (2/1) and stuck another pound on (13/2) just before they equalised. But APART from that I too didn’t care who won ;-)

  6. Tontine Tim on 13th March 2016 6:42 pm

    That was very interesting.

I recall the game got halfway through the gate which the crowd had burst before being forced back into the street by Horses.

If I re-call it was Swan the Chairman who stated that the Celtic fans would not travel in numbers which increased the crowd,I think he also tried to change Hibs colours to purple.

Noticed this morn, that Bournemouth did the most running in the English/Welsh league.

They have been rewarded for this. No superstars, but superfit

This is what RD is attempting, and given time he will succeed.

Full blown party in my sister’s house in Clydebank tonight. Proud of Marcus and his best mate Jackson. Wonderful for such a kind lovely man Roy McGregor. Well done Staggies!

  9. Thanks for kind comments and prayers , slight improvement for the old bhoy but a long long way to go sadly so all prayers welcomed .

The Derry result and hearing Chelsea got beat has helped his form I’m sure.

    Thanks again .

  10. Jobo and GFTB

Like you guys, I enjoyed the game , I remember a couple of years a go when St MIrren beat Hearss that was a cracking game as well.

I went to work in England the next day and a few of the lads down there told me that it was the best game they had watched all weekend.

Today’s match was not a classic, but an honest contest between two decent sides, as I spouted earlier RC just looked better organised and relied on teamwork. Hibs were hoping Cummings or Stokes would pull a rabbit out the hat.

Anyway , off to collect the good lady from her toils at the coal face, overdosed on football today, may have to hand over the remote soon..

As usual I was saying that Ross Co with both teams scoring (11/2) was a fantastic bet since they were playing a team not in great form from a lower league, alas, I didn’t bet it

Delaney’s, I hope the family have a great night and celebrate in style.

Did Marcus get surgery on his shoulder?

  17. Delaneys Dunky on

    Dallas

The Celtic physio gave Marcus a week of work and fitted a brace on his shoulder which he has been playing with. You won’t read that in the SMSM. Good Celtic story.

  19. watched the League cup final today, mostly with an eye to us :

    1. Henderson isn’t yet a contender for our oversubscribed midfield yet. Some nice touches but needs to develop.

    2. Stokes, sadly, would be an upgrade on our undersubscribed forward line but in an ideal world should be nowhere near us. Lazy.

    3. That pitch looked ‘sticky’ again, which worries me when we play the plucky championship team next month.

Ard Macha – The Bobby Sands memories are a fantastic read. Keep it lit.

Delighted for Ross County today. In a game with more than a few Bhoys and ex-Bhoys involved on each side , my support was always for the Staggies due to Jimmy Mac being their manager.

St Pat’s Dumbarton bhoys always knew a thing or two about winning football matches and cups and we’ll gladly add today’s success to the roll of honour. (Incidentally young McGinn’s dad and uncles all went to the school too)

Delaney’s …I’ve saw your posts about your nephew before but being a 99% lurker I’ve not responded until now. I saw young “Boomer” play when he was a pup a right few times when he was at Duntocher before being picked up at Pro Youth, as my son played against him a good few times. I watched him once or twice at Murray Park too against Falkirk pro youth but had lost track of him for a few years. Was genuinely delighted when you posted a few weeks ago about his debut . Your comment that his manager said “he had the hardest left foot shot in Scotland” …(or something along those lines) is indeed a compliment as Macky had a sweet left foot on him as a player. Your nephew has landed lucky as, in Jim McIntyre, he has a coach who will instill the virtues of working hard and achieving your dreams. Your nephew was a bumper from a young age , Jim McIntyre wasn’t really but what he has achieved in his career is testimony to working hard , making sacrifices and never giving up. Jim was always a good player as a boy but there were always others who caught the eye of scouts before he did. I was a couple of years ahead of him but watched him often as I had a brother who played in school team and boys club with him. Jim actually made it to playing U21 level at juvenile without being picked up by any club, although he was playing U21 at 16 or 17 if I remember correctly. He may have had a season at Duntocher at 16s (memory not 100% on that) , so might be worth getting young Chris to ask him (if they don’t already know they may have that in common)

Anyway…hope you all enjoy your night , and hope your nephew goes onto fulfill his potential in the game

    Hail Hail

Delaney’s, that dumplin bbc commentator, Liam MacLeod, will no doubt have been mentioning games we had lost previously rather than our physio helping a Ross County player play today.

Its pleasing the assistance we gave Marcus but will get no media coverage.

In last year’s final, there was a round of applause from both set of fans in the third minute for the late United player, Frank Kopel, who died of Alzheimers while in his early sixties.

The only media person who mentioned it was , Jim Spence. The only decent football journalist in the Scottish media.

Tontine Tim, Tom Hart continued the work of Swann .

His decision not to let even the Celtic Cine club to film our league winning game in 1977 was the actions of a sad man.

At the risk of sounding condescending, part of this site’s overall appeal (and one of its strengths) is the sheer diversity of topics discussed and opinions aired.

Otherwise, you views are as welcome as everyone else’s …

  29. Tontine Tim,

That game at Easter Road is the only one where I couldn’t get in. I was with my Dad and actually at the turnstile when the old (or so he seemed to me) guy manning it said he had just received orders to let nobody else in. We had come through on the back of the lorry my late Uncle John drove for his firm. Was it ’61 or ’62?

  30. Just watched coverage of the 29th annual St Patrick’s Day paraded in Toronto, you know that city that was once called the “Belfast of North America”, where clementine walks flourished and Corpus Christi processions were attacked, where to be the mayor, chief of police, fire chief etc required being a member of the lol and I don’t mean laughing out loud either.

Toronto has moved on as has its people, why is Scotland still stuck in the past.

Just saw there on tele the cousin of a hunger striker, am I allowed to say that on here.
