Passing greats, breath-taking negative news placement

912

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast I did with the LostBhoys on Celtic in the 1950s (superb production quality, you should check out what they are doing), I took the opportunity to mention the Hibs team of the late forties and early fifties, including the celebrated Famous Five forwards.

They won three league titles and narrowly missed out on another two as they unequivocally dominated Scottish football.  They were probably the best team in Europe at that stage, only the lack of a formal European competition denied them recognition.  Celtic battened down the hatches against Hibs in the 1953 Coronation Cup final but nothing would be the same again for the Edinburgh club, although reputation got them an invitation to the inaugural European Cup, in which they reached the semi-final in 1956.

We learned today that the last surviving member of the Famous Five, Lawrie Reilly, died, aged 84.  Their achievement should be suitably acknowledged (this is not an endorsement of Willie Ormond’s later work, obviously).

The news that Hibs have today bid £200k for a striker is significant.  £200k doesn’t buy you much in English football but it is a substantial investment for any club, apart from Celtic.  Maybe Hibs long period in the wilderness is coming to an end.

I only caught up today on the Scottish Sun’s online coverage of the arson attack in Salsburgh (alas, not unique in the bus industry), complete with photographs of Celtic supporters and Neil Lennon (all of whom were four hundred miles from the incident).  I remember reading a story on rape, robbery and assault in London in The Sun back in the 80s, accompanied by inner-city photos featuring exclusively Afro-Caribbean-Londoners going about their business.  Real subtle.

Remember the email Charlotte Fakes produced on negative news stories against ‘other’ clubs being planted?  Utterly breath-taking.  Scottish football, as it was, and for some, still is, is inherently an unstable influence on Scottish society.  We need to take our business elsewhere and I don’t believe any of our top-flight colleagues would object.

There is no evidence of a plan.

No evidence of any desire for change .

Darren Ferguson: ‘Paddy McCourt wants Peterborough United move’

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has claimed that Northern Ireland international Paddy McCourt wants to join the club this summer.

The 29-year-old, who departed Celtic on a free transfer at the end of last season, is currently on trial at London Road.

“I’ve known of Paddy for years and we tried to sign him when he moved to Celtic a few years ago,” he told the Peterborough Telegraph.

“He is a very good player who has outstanding ability on the ball and great balance. He can play in a number of different positions.

“We’ll talk again… and see where it takes us. He has other offers but he has made it clear he wants to come here.”

Birmingham City have also been strongly linked with his services.

Looks like Higuain will sign for Napoli . He hasn’t signed yet —- there is a problem re image rights —– speculation is that Napoli will deal with the problem in the same way as PSG dealt with Cavani —- ie —-simply increase the player’s annual salary..

Basilea’s Dragovic has rejected a silly money offer to sign for Dinamo Kiev and will sign for Inter . He has said —” my career counts more than money “.

    ========================

    I completely agree.

Maybe domestic/ european football on alternate weekends with maximum number of games being allowed in Domestic comps?

Anyway, apart from that what I was going to point out to our host, Paul67 and others – the media coverage we will get will still largely be provided by Scottish outlets and Scottish Journos. We will still be a Scottish based club, paying out of Scotland – the Scottish papers will still have an interest in us. The Sun hates what Celtic are north and south of the border. Media coverage of us will always be negative. I’ve come to accept that. We can do three things about it – 1. Don’t engage with it or 2. Campaign hard against it. 3. Continue to build the alternative media

I don’t think 2 is possible. So I refuse to engage too much with it. I think 3 is the best possibility and hats off to Paul67 for being at the very cutting edge of that.

As a Lefty I see the same treatment meted out to Trade Unions, Socialists, Environmentalists etc etc They are all given minimal or bad press or laughed at as some sort of lunatic fringe. (See Celtic’s Irish identity for details)

I also think we need a dose of realism in our search for alternative leagues. What do we expect from it? More excitement? Yep, that would happen, for a while. More money – hopefully, probably even. But would it be money enough to make us year in year out Champions League prospects or even Europa League prospects?

As I see it we might get on to a par with the bigger, non middle east bloated, French clubs. Which is not a million miles from where we are now.

Those trades might not be from today, they had a delayed report request on them. Also sights like lse, etc use the price of the transaction to guess whether it’s a buy or sell eg if it’s lower than the current price it’s assumed to be a sell but it may not be.

Sevcomedy sleuth prompts mass deletion of posts on Celtic fan sites:

“I personally have never looked at a c****c fan site, but for those who keep tabs on what their fan have been posting perhaps it’s time to look at when they first made any reference to the fire and compare this to the time being reported in the mhedia as being from Police sources. You see I don’t reckon that timothy is all that smart and may well have been posting before or just after the actual fire took place.”

I agree. I suspect that if Cardiff or Swansea ever got in a position to win the EPL then their rivals would benefit from some strange referee decsions. Can the English Premier League risk having a Welsh winner? The best club in England is not English? Would Celtic be allowed to win the English Premier league?
