Patterson sale confirms onerous task for Celtic

199

Selling a squad player for a figure of around £11m is good business in anyone’s book, doubly so for Newco.  The anticipated money for Nathan Patterson, on top of the £4.5m for their management team from Aston Villa, will cover at least 9 months of their losses this season.  They may even break even for the first season in their history.

There will be limited impact on team performance this season, 20-year-old Patterson has hardly featured, with penalty kick taker James Tavernier preferred at right back.  Tavernier’s peak is already behind him, the pain of losing Patterson will be realised when Tavernier remains at right back well into his decline.

That pain is so distant right now it is irrelevant.  Newco need to raise money to pay their bills to finish the season, Everton’s cash will help here.  They need to sell – more than this – in order to avoid Uefa Financial Fair Play inhibitions. If they can raise enough cash to finish the season, they will be able to spend some of that money without affecting their immediate FFP status, so they could even be stronger for the remainder of the season than they would be if they retain Patterson.

Celtic have had a great transfer window so far, but that six point gap at the top of the table remains onerous.  It will take an enormous effort to overcome.

  1. And give players a reason to fail, they will take it, I don’t think that is Ange’s way at all. I do not get these recent leaders almost trying to kill any growing optimism.

  2. strange article all because thems looking to get rid of 1 reserve player for unknown fee and details of same.

  3. The sale is almost certainly happening lads – this story broke on Merseyside, it’s not the usual Scottish press making up pish about Morelos.

The guardian are reporting a 9 million fee which is probably more accurate than Sky Sports Scotland…

The fear if you can call it that from P67 is that Sevco have made a breakthrough. A big sale to a big league.

I don’t see them repeating that trick anytime soon though.

Not sure I can agree with you.

SW — lacks experience and is a limited player.

Good attitude but he has regressed this season after being out of the team and needs coaching.

CS — very patchy with some improvement.

Decent footballer but a bit of a drama queen.

Currently failing to live up to his price tag.

NB — no / no / thrice no.

Can work playing in a three with the NT.

Not a hope playing in a 2 in the SPL / EuL / CL qualifier.

DM — you are having a laugh / raw as sushi.

Needs a lot of work and coaching.

B team this season and next.

    CCV — loan signing.

Limited player but growing into our style.

Puts in a shift and does all the tough / hard work.

CJ — superb footballer / good defender.

Abba class drama queen when things go wrong.

Out for over 12 months so not sure what player is going to turn up.

Has failed to live up to his price tag.

    Consequently a bit thin.

We need investment in this area.

A dark day for football that echoes a decade to 2012, if and when Sevco make their only big sale, not long after their only title.

Regardless of who they sell, they’ll always have the SFA the biggest impediment Scottish football ever had.

Six points is nothing, its how most of them came about thats the problem.

  6. Aribo’s form has been in good consistent form since the start of this season. As we all know there are players, whose contracts are nearing their end, who miraculously find this form when looking for an improved offer or a transfer. I personally think he’ll sign a pre-contract with someone this window, he is a really good midfielder who creates the runs necessary from midfield to break down the banks of 4 and 5, and he does his fair share of the ugly stuff to. por cierto,

  7. While Happy at the recent transfer of the Japanese bhoys I sincerely hope that’s not the end of our transfer business , we badly need a no nonsense good in the air centre half because we do not defend cross balls well . Talk of the Motherwell boy , worth a punt possibly ,big lad exceptionally good in the air . Tough as teak maybe ange could do something with him as he did with ralston , And I don’t think he would cost the earth . Also a battler for midfield to defend our wee Japanese bhoys . That would do me . HH

  8. MadMitch – I hear you but I’m guessing that Ange sees CCV and CJ as automatic picks and raw or not we have decent SPFL level back-up in Starfelt and Welsh, with Bitton being the utility player who he believes has grown under his tenure.

Murray remains around the periphery (only way to cure his rawness is to play him) and therefore with money tight, and it is, we need to focus on more critical areas – RW, CAM and (if I had my way) a LB.

  9. Pot Cierto,

Aribo is their Tom Rogic.Very clever player. One I fear most in their team.

Contrary to some,I think Paterson will develop into a very good full back. That’s what Everton are buying.Whether they need potential or EPL ready player at the moment is another thing entirely. They ave already been bitten once with Gilmour going for buttons, and they need cash NOW,so first bidd er won out.

Not unduly concerned because that money will not be spent on players.Too many other avenues for it.

This break is going to drag.

  10. Where did the £4.5m come from for the Aston Villa management team ?

    Positive I read

£1.5 was confirmed in accounts ???

With regards alleged fee for an 11 game right back

Remember a previous team with same name

claim of getting £9m for another young superstar after selling to Liverpool

Was it not confirmed as only being £600k in the accounts

Positive something happened not long after

Hope same happens to this shower of flies

  11. The Mad Ones take on our second most improved player this season,NIR Biton, who has been a stand out.

    “No,no just no”

This is what you are up against, trying to talk football.

  12. Why can some admit they were wrong when players they obviously never like, play exceptionally well.?Very prevalent on here. Some so bad, they admit it very grudgingly.Which is worse.

  13. Cant say I know much about patterson, but it’s a nice earner for them and him I would presume. Not sure i beleive they are paying 10 million up front, but who knows these days. As Paul said it will help pay the bills for the time being.

We did not pay enough attention to sevco for to long and they mugged us last season. We should certainly be paying attention to our rivals and we should be making sure we are tooled up for the job at hand. People always say focus on yourself but i prefer to know if am going into a knife or gun fight before the event

    HH

  14. We might slag off Nathan Patterson because he plays for them but he is a big leggy hard runnng RB with caps for a slightly resurgent Scottish team. He seems to be in the Alan Hutton mode and they got similar money for him. For a player his age, Everton may think they have a bargain as seasoned RBs with EPL or championship experience might cost them £15-20m, so inflated is this market.

If they use the money to buy Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen, they could make £5-6m profit and not be much worse off in playing staff. Or GVB might know of a competent Dutch RB, available for a third of the fee Everton paid.

We cannot influence their good fortune ; we can only try to control our own. We have just invested in 3 new players, all with a serious chance of enhancing the first team squad. The loss of many of our loanees and fringe players will not diminish us much as most have failed to make the grade and few can genuinely complain of not being given the chance to shine. Ewan Henderson failed to pull up any trees at Ross County, just as big brother failed to do so at Hibs. They are good players- just a bit below the level we need.

Of the loanees, only Scott Robertson at Crewe and Ross Doohan at Tranmere have impressed and Ross may be unwilling to come back as he saw Conor Hazard (who is also likley to go to further his career) being favoured last time and, with Joe Hart, in clear possession of the shirt and Tobi Oluwayemi coming through, he may need to move on too. I would still give Scott Robertson one more season though.

Karamoko may be willing to stay if we bought his brother Siriki from Peterborough but otherwise, the pre-season injury seems to have killed off our chances of seeing this very promising talent in our first team regularly- that will be a shame as he seems to have become a more popular team mate with his peers.

I cannot get too agitated by our Lowland League position or success. It is a standard- far too low to act as a bridge to the first team and I’d say the same of Leagu Two and bottom half teams in League One in Scotland too. The English equivalents, where Ross Doohan and Scott Robertson play, offer a much higher standard. Teams there could field reserve teams that would walk away with titles in League One and Two in Scotland. We have to get a playing environment far tougher than Lowland League to develop the 2 or 3 talents that have a chance of getting to first team level. England provides our best bet for that.

Seeing the dodgy transfer dealings between the clubs in the Red Bull franchise (Liepzig, Salzburg, New York, Brazil and Ghana), plus the recent ease of transfers betwen Brentford and Midjtylland, it looks like we could benefit from a “feeder” outfit at arms length ownership in somewhere productive like Portugal or Croatia to develop talent at a more testing competitive level.

It’s not entirely ethical but neither is the artificail imposition of brakes on our reserve team development that we face from the SFA and Scottish League set ups.

  15. Mad Mitch

    Serious question.

Have you ever seen our B team in action live? If so, how regularly? Do you have infor from coaches at that level?

You are remarkably scathing about our young boys. Since we have become more of a global scouting network and now have a squad packed with up to 20 international capped players to get past , we never see any more than 2 or 3 per year getting a chance to play first team and are lucky to see one per year make it to squad level.

With the break up our 10iar ambitions, and Ange’s needs for warm bodies in pre-season, we got a bit over excited by our young players who stepped in, most of them, ahead of their due time. The likes of Dane Murray had never had senior competitive experience because the initial Covid lockdown destroyed almost a year of Development work in competitive football. he will need more than one season in Lowland League to get a pathway to the first team, if he proves good enough, and the same is true of Shaw and Urogohide. We have actually halted their development and would have been better served sending them back on loan to Sheff Wednesday or equivalent, but Ange needed the numbers. i would not be writing any of these two off but they gave seen the standard they have to get to in order to command more game time, and they are not there yet. Loaning players to Dunfermline , Airdrie or Queens Park is almost as good, or bad, as writing them off and telling them to find another team.

If we want them to develop, the Callum McGregor route is the best. if Tranmere get promoted, I’d like to see what Micky Mellon could do with some of ours.

  16. My friends in Celtic,

We do not have the money that the EPL has. Circa £11m for a prospect who might be successful is a calculated investment.

I’m more concerned about our players and our finances. There is a distinct possibility that we might not have full crowds until April.

We need the correct players in, but equally important is that we get players who have no future with us out the door.

Unlike EPL teams the bulk of our money is through the gates. This is something we should never forget, it is a crucial difference.

Currently we are enjoying English games beamed to our homes with clubs enjoying full houses and corporate hospitality. Money is pouring in.

Put simply, we cannot afford crazy signings of prospects we fail to progress. As a club we are impacted disproportionately by higher taxation and the cost of running a club is set to rocket.

Make no mistake this will impact Scottish football and most clubs will have to cut costs as they wait on help from the Scottish government.

In summary, European football is crucial and we need to be much smarter in determinating our playing squad.

Obvious comments really but worth emphasing.

Well Everton is my English team, am I happy that Nathan Patterson has went there, certainly but at that price 😵

  18. As far as I can see, most people on here who have commented on it, believe the Sevco fullback has been sold for 11 million pounds.

Where did that information come from?

Is it likely to be true?

  19. CaddingtonCommon on

P67, lots of ifs in your leader. A couple of observations if I may. Patterson is in my opinion a much better player than their current full back. Whether the fee is £10 clubs know.

Everton are in a desperate state at the moment and this is a panic buy hence the over inflated price. Financially they are in trouble and we just need hold our nerve. Who knows what is going to happen in January? Did any forecast a trophy so early this season, or three further signings so quickly ?

I can’t agree that sevco have been lucky this season. Refereeing decisions going their way isn’t good luck, it is cheating. Sevco supporting referees giving secvo decisions is cheating, pure and simple.

The covid situation has been used to their advantage, as I forecast on this site the day the league started in august 2020. It wasn’t enough that they have the SFA and the referees helping, they needed the politicians too.

This cheating will continue for the rest of this season and forever more.

We will likely have to beat them at least twice this season and to do that we have to be way better than them. Time will tell but I think we will not be allowed to win the league this season. The stakes are too high.

  21. Surprised P67 mentions UEFA FInancial Fair Play. That file is gathering dust in a cupboard in Nyon, probably not to be dusted down anytime soon. LaLiga has its own FFP rules, perhaps the SFA/SPFL could introduce something similar in these parts ?

The EPL is keeping us football addicts entertained during this holiday period. Some great games, full houses and a degree of normality. Even 3,000 allowed into the Ally Pally for the darts. An indoor event.

As Scotland moves towards being a totalitarian state, the chances of 60,000 being permitted into Celtic Park appears increasingly remote. Even with the majority of adults being triple vaccinated.

You are applying logic and common sense to our competitor – not wise in my opinion

I believe The Hun will look to loan or get free transfer (Soutar) 2 or 3 players and use the money from Patterson to pay their wages

They may even buy as well as loan

But they will go all in to win the league

Some on here have diluted the financial variance between automatic entry into the CL and the Europa League

The Hun needs the CL money so they will gamble any money from Patterson to get into the CL

Your logic is solid when applied to Celtic – but our competitor has a different view

To be fair we did get a mention in Paul’s second last sentence😂😂😱

  27. If the Patterson transfer has legs hopefully this stirs a few other Huns to get disgruntled and haggle for a move.

Having said that the sum of their parts is greater than the individuals , take the forwards , fatty will run down his contract next year and leave ; Roofe is trouble and not many clubs will touch him ; Kent is an inconsistent wideboy , possibly Aribo and Kamara could move for a modest fees , and in defence possibly Goldson , although his previous medical history may put a few off.

There is next to no chance of the Hun player trading their way out of the financial cesspit they have made for themselves, so on balance relatively relaxed about one of their youngsters moving , hopefully causes some discomfort/ disruption among the first team regulars

  30. More ‘succulent lamb’ crap coming out of Ipox. Patterson while admittedly looking a ‘prospect’, is not even first choice; out of contract this year; & could walk for nothing in the summer. Think they’d be glad to get something for him as he obviously wasn’t staying but no way would Everton pay that much for an unproven player.
