Pawns cinch and the proxy war

220

The dispute Newco have with the Scottish Professional Football League over their sponsorship deal with car retailer cinch might look a bit ridiculous.  The club are refusing to display SPFL sponsor logos and, apparently, refused to permit their manager to be interviewed by BT Sport unless the broadcaster taped over the logos at Motherwell on Saturday.

It’s an odd hill on which to stand, even after considering that cinch are direct competitors to the Newco chairman’s car retailer business. cinch will continue to advertise and gain market share at the expense of traditional retailers, the chairman is called Park, not Canute.

It makes more sense if you consider Newco want to replace SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster with a more compliant individual, think a 21st century Jim Farry.  If they can beat the SPFL in the courts, they can push for Doncaster’s removal with some authority. For this, any small hill will be sufficient.

This is a proxy war with the governance of our game is the real tide.

Good morning from a sun-drenched Village.

Enjoyed the snooker last night. Celtic man John Higgins from Wishaw beat England’s Jack Lisowski in the final frame by 13-12 in a thrilling climax.

Higgins faces world no 1 Ronnie O’Sullivan in this evening’s second semi-final.

Shame I’ll have to miss the big European game.

I retired when John was 12-11 down last night. Delighted but not surprised at the outcome. What a final four. Anyone can win it but I’d say Ronnie is favourite. Hopefully, John can do it. He’s been brilliant this year, despite losing a number of finals. I’d love to see him make it number 5.

Might do something I never do tonight and watch the old firm match.

Some great snooker on tonight plus hopefully

the huns getting humped or blitzkrieged

But the big event this weekend is Sunday where

we hopefully win the league against the manky mob

The huns wont win their remaining 3 games 6-0 so

if we beat them Sunday we are champions

  4. My friends in Celtic,

Many of us recently received a memo from Celtic about important safety information prior to Sunday’s derby match.

A section of London Road is being completely closed off to traffic and pedestrians.

Why have all this hassle and potential safety concerns when the easiest and obvious answer is to fill the park with Celtic supporters.

It is obvious there are safety concerns so why take the risk.

And why INCONVENIENCE our fans for thems.

    HH.

There is no great inconvenience. Old Firm FC supporters gates open 10am and close 10:30. All OFFC ticket holders must be in stadium by 10:30.

At 10:30 London Road will be re-opened and from then all areas around the stadium are open to Celtic supporters. It has been that way for a few years.

    Hardly a major inconvenience.

This is the first time all four semi-finalists are former world champions.

All three games should be classics.

  7. I suspect wee gio would be happy with a one goal deficit to take back to Ibrox. Hopefully the tie is put to bed tonight.

It would only affect pedestrians and traffic on London Road for 30 minutes, 2 hours before the game. That’s why I referred to it as a minor inconvenience to ensure segregation.

It has never caused a problem before. It’s only an issue now because OFFC supporters are being allowed into Celtic Park. That’s the real issue here.

  11. Tonight’s EL semi-final in Germany is a milestone. Never before have two clubs so young contested a round so deep in any major European competition. Leipzig are just 13 years old, and of course The Rangers have recently turned 10.

  12. the old firm supporters will be locked in celtic park an hour and a half before kick off, and I probably wont even be out my bed.

its a funny old world so it is.

Yeah last time Old Firm FC was in town I stood watching them pass in their protective corridor.

The crush in Janefield St a couple of years ago, was exactly the cause of diverting supporters from their normal routes into the stadium, if the Club had any balls, they would have banned them, until the results of an SFA inquiry, into the bottle incidents at Poundland a couple of weeks ago, thus forcing the SFA into actually doing something about it.Instead our Board and the Hampden Huns are hiding under their desks yet again

  17. As a wee aside,

on the night that Ryan Giggs scored the wonder goal in the FA Cup semi at Villa Park, me and a colleague were staying at the NEC Birmingham.

We watched the game on the tv in th ebar, and sometime later a load of united supporters turned up, all with irish accents

My pal was from Eriskay, a bit naive, got into chatting with them, oh big celtic fan me, lovely to hear your accents, I take it you support United AND CELTIC offcourse.

At this two of the assembled unfurled a big Ulster flag, with Shankill Loyal on it.

Nervous laughs from us, and a swift departure.

“It has never caused a problem before” Are you for real?

A similar decision making process, and indeed thought process, by the Celtic Board, in conjunction with Police Scotland led to a situation, on September 2nd 2018, which put thousands of Celtic supporters at risk of severe injury or worse, behind the North Stand, or the Janefield Street ‘underpass’. These decisions were made to accommodate, and indeed prioritise 800 Rangers supporters, itself a response to a similar exercise by Dave King re Celtic supporters going to Ibrox. I’ve covered this before on here, as has Paul67, indeed Paul went so far as mention the spectre of Hillsborough in a later article. He was right to do so. You may feel able to make light of the potential impact of a similar scenario to that of just a few years ago but some of us, rightly, do not trust those not only making said decisions, but repeating ones which put Celtic supporters at risk in our home ground.

PARKHEAD, I was in the front enclosure of the Liverpool main stand the day Kenny Dalgish’s Blackburn won the league (even though Liverpool beat them on the day). I was down with a ‘mixed’ group of football supporters (mainly Tims right enough) for a day out at Anfield and I had my Celtic scarf on. I even spoke to Mark Walters, who was warming up on the track, as I passed him. Give him his due he just grinned when he saw the scarf.

Had absolutely no problem all day – great day out for the lot of us, we saw the ‘Pool win AND Man Ure lost so Kenny won the league, to great acclaim from the Liverpool supporters in the ground.

    ……………………………..

Good one Brian…BUT….The very 1st time that I saw SAHB in Concert, they were playing ” Support” to SLADE in The old Greens Playhouse on Renfield Street, although I cant remember if it had become ” The Apollo” by that time…no matter ?

My mate had seen SAHB before in concert with Mott the Hoople, and he got us Two Tickets for the Front Stalls, very near the stage. My mate was very eager to have me see them for the 1st time.

Greens Playhouse/The Apollo held around 3,000 Punters.

As SAHB were the support group to Slade that night, they came on stage first obviously. At that time SAHB had ONLY ONE Album out, which was the Famous ” FRAMED” Album.

SAHB had just started playing their 1st song when the MAJORITY of the audience were giving them abuse, and shouting ” WE WANT SLADE “etc. ALEX and the Boys just ignored the abusive chants and heckling until midway thru their 2nd Song.

ALEX was at the microphone and ordered the boys in the band to stop playing. He stood there and SHOUTED into the microphone…” If you dont all shut up…..YOU wont get to see your FECKING Slade…as we will play ALL NIGHT! ” !

If I remember correctly, the ” House Lights” had came on….and it was clear to see that the Majority of the crowd were ” SKINHEADS”. There appeared to be some discussion with the stage Manager…or SAHBs Manager very close to OUR Seats…..with One Guy in a Suit telling the other…” Get them AFF…or theres gonna be a RIOT” !

At this point, it also appeared that my Mate and I were Two of the VERY few who had ” Long Hair”, so we became concerned about OUR Safety, amongst all these Skin Heads.

However, ALEX’s ” MESSAGE and THREAT” to the unruly Slade crowd… ” WORKED”…..and the Band continued to play with the unruly crowd actually beginning to ENJOY SAHB for the rest of their Set.

NO more heckling etc, just a great night of music….and Slade were pretty good also !

So ALEX was a ” brave man” indeed…HE wasnt about to allow some Skin Head yobos ruin the night !
