Pay the piper or pay the consequences

712

Humiliate your rivals in the Cup Final by putting five goals past them and, if you don’t pay the piper, you pay the consequences.  Winning trophies while running up debts you cannot afford to pay is not a viable strategy.  The consequences, if you are fortunate enough to survive, has to be painful, otherwise football removes the moral hazard of failure, making Hearts recent experience more likely to happen to other clubs.

Hearts season at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership is the cost of pouring millions of pounds creditors will not receive onto the Hampden Park pitch to hit five goals past a Hibs team, who live within their means.  Many other teams were denied progress in the cups, or higher prize money in the league, while the fantasists were building to their 5-1 glory.

Billy Brown’s nonsense about rescinding a punishment for a club who are still in administration is yet another fantasy, but it was fostered in 2012, by the notion that Scottish football can change insolvency rules on the hoof to accommodate a failed club.  If you want to change insolvency rules, knock yourself out, but there is near-uniform agreement that you cannot change rules when a favoured club falls foul, in order to benefit them.

This notion that because the rules were not changed to help Newco Rangers into top flight football, Scotland’s reigning Third Division champions would be outraged, is hardly news.  The 11 top flight clubs, most of whom appear to be enjoying a competitive ‘Best of the Rest’ league race, and a whole clutch of lower league clubs, would also be outraged if Hearts were advantaged.

In October 2011, when Rangers fate was privately acknowledged, Craig Whyte, Neil Doncaster and SPL chairman, Ralph Topping, discussed this rule change ruse.  It should have been a 30 second conversation; declined when first proposed.  Instead, Scottish football was put through the real trauma of a fantasy fear of Armageddon.  Now everyone who can’t pay their bills think they have the same entitlement to campaign for a rule change – and why shouldn’t they, the tabloids told everyone that changing the rules on the hoof was acceptable.

Hearts fans know this.  They are heading for relegation, those I have spoken to have accepted the situation.  For them, it’s all about ensuring the club survives and sorting things out for the long term, SPFL results don’t even register.  I don’t know any who want to see their club go cap in hand for rule changes, the way Whyte, then Green, did.  It’s demeaning and lacks dignity.

This is turning into my favourite domestic season yet.  All the ‘They’ve suffered enough’ merchants better get their strategies sorted for the next episode.

Personally I think that the Easdales much prefer a lower profile.

There is no such thing as bad publicity-unless you have something to hide.

I agree with you Raymac re Nir Biton, I think we might have got ourselves a cracker there. However why on earth are you linking Moyes with O’Connell. I’m doing jigs of delight at the prospect of a Cork lad making it at Celtic. Please leave me my dream.

Very simply, back in the days I played football, back in Glasgow and beyond, there was a schooling, when they hit you, no matter how hard they hit you, never, ever, ever, let then even begin to think they hurt you.

A few years ago, feck it, decades ago, I played against the Met. Police, their right back came over the ball and shattered my shin pad and my shin… I did go down. I got up again and playing on I heard the prick whinge he’d lost a stud. I looked down and embedded in my shin was this pricks stud. I walked over to him and his mate and pulled the stud out of my leg and handed it to him and told him to stop whingeing, he went white. Two minutes later my mate just smacked him, he went even whiter.

To my grave I take both those moments.

You never let them know when they hurt you and when they least expect it. smack them!!!

Moral of my story mate as I’m sure you know… it’s a mans game.

    Re: Servco cost-cutting

I think the main concern for the Sevco board is player departures rather than player sales.

They will settle for getting players off the wage bill and the board are probably resigned to having to reach payoff settlements in order to facilitate this attempted rescue.

Sevco will not receive any more than nominal fees for any players who decide to leave/are chucked out the door. Regardless of current wages and the inflated status of the club, Sevco are a third division outfit whose players perform at a semi-professional level. No other club will pay serious fees for anyone playing in that standard of football.

Reality is about to hit them like a ton of bricks, but whatever happens, Sevco will offer no threat to Celtic for at least a decade. Providing they survive that long.

I know 25p has been measured as a tipping point with some fairy stories about that being the point that Dave King will ride to the rescue.

If there is any significance in 25p I suspect it’s the point below which they won’t be able to raise the required funds via the market and they’ll have to look at property as a means of raising cash. Either the sale of Murray Park or some arrangement for Ibrox.

I’m just guessing though but we do know cutting salaries alone won’t help medium to long term.

I was meaning it is a major achievement that Hearts have survived this long. I had expected liquidation towards the end of last year. In that respect they have won their biggest battle to date.

But you are right. Liquidation is still a real possibility for the Salt and Sauce Huns.

And if it happens they will not boycott matches against Dundee United at Tannadice.

The British public are overwhelmingly opposed to naming a bank holiday after Margaret Thatcher, a poll has found.

Re King riding to the rescue if Sevco Shares hit 25p. King or anyone else buying tranches of Sevco Shares will not help Sevco in the least. It is only if the Club issues new Shares and King or anyone else buys them that the money goes to Sevco. The problem re issuing new Shares at a heavily discounted price is that it dilutes the holdings of existing Shareholders. These are the guys currently calling the shots and they will not want this to happen.

Sevco are in quicksand at around chest level.

I said on here yesterday that Ibroke is a real Albatross for them as well. That place is falling into a real state of disrepair because no serious maintenance work has been carried out at the ground since Moonbeams was borrowing money to do so.

Obviously I’m only estimating a figure, but I reckon as things stand the bill to put everything right and keep on top of the situation will be north of £10m.

  23. Saint Stivs – I think the tories would be delighted with a ‘Yes’ vote. It would ensure a tory government in England for a generation. They can’t say it of course, but it’s a win-win for them.

Depends how many of the real players that got their shares for 1p are still holding. Stock could be diluted two-fold and they’d still be able to get out at circa 10x their investment.

I like quiet men on the pitch – they don’t winge or gloat and they are never intimidated…they are nails without being bullies they can play without showboating. If I were to pick a couple of players who have embodied my ideal Celtic players – McStay and Henke fit the bill perfectly…real men…quiet and determined. not may opponents messed with them.

Yep weeminger but most of those guys are not in for the long term. I reckon a lot of them are gone already. Obviously I’m only guessing but I would feel confident that the majority shareholders are now guys who supported the IPO or lads like the Easdales who have been building up their stock over the past 6 months.

I am amazed at the number of financial experts on CQN however, they have been saying for ages that the Rangers are going to run out of money and funding. It still has not happened unless we know the exact income and expenditure of the died team you cannot say for certainty that they will go bust. Now maybe they are completely stupid over at Ibrokes and the guys at the top dont understand basic income and expenditure but I think that is unlikley. Why dont all the financial experts wait until they go bust and then explain why to the rest of us uneducated in the ways of finance what happened and why ? otherwise your just bumping your gums. H.H.

My point was in reference to the studs through the shinpad.

In years gone by certain players thought nothing of that sort of ‘tackle’.

Whats this about Callum McGregor and Wolves, anything in it?

Would be somewhat bemusing to allow a young player, banging in goals from midfield at a decent level, be allowed to leave for peanuts before being given a proper shot in the first team.
