Pay your way or go to the wall

483

I’ve not touched the Anthony Stokes story on purpose. It’s one of those stories you could be writing for a week, if you started. Anthony enjoyed a successful period for Celtic but the writing has been on the wall since the latter part of Neil Lennon’s era.

He’s still only 27, with around half his career ahead of him, but it won’t be at Celtic. I hope he gets a club who can make the most of his talent.

Despite the riches brought by a new TV deal solidarity contract, many English Football League clubs are still under severe financial pressure, including Neil’s current charges, Bolton Wanderers. Bolton owe the vast majority of their circa £200m debt to owner Eddie Davies, so there’s a good chance that will be written off, but administration remains likely.

Bolton chairman, Phil Gartside, who I hear is now seriously ill, saw this coming years ago, when he proposed an EPL 2-type league reorganisation, while lobbying for the inclusion of Celtic and Rangers. The plan was kyboshed by his then fellow Premier League acquaintances. It would have been transformational for Celtic, and literally a life saver for Rangers.

That Bolton debt figure is pretty eye-watering but the returns from non-league club Forest Green Rovers caught the eye. Net debts reached £5.4m after season 2013-14, thanks to a £2.9m loss. In non-league football. There’s only one Scottish club with that kind of debt. Although I suppose they are also playing off-piste in the Championship.  Pay your way or go to the wall.  Long term that rule applies.

The football industry in England and Wales will survive for a while yet, despite the broken financial model. It won’t be until the TV rights value drops due to reliable and easy to access pirate feeds that the bubble will burst. And it will burst.  The underlying fragility in the football business is that your expenditure is either fixed or often contracted on a multi-year basis, while income is vulnerable to sharp shocks.  It’s not a healthy business to be running at a deficit in.

  3. So, America finance a fascist coup in the Ukraine, the new fascist dictatorship tell everyone in the country what language they are allowed to speak and begin a campaign of ethnic cleansing, the new dictatorship decide they can’t get enough native fascists so bring in forginers to fight and govern. Their agenda, put nuclear weapons on Russia’s door step and Russia should accept that meekly because the empire will have their way.

Remind us what happened when the Soviet tried the same thing in Cuba and tell us why the Russians should reactant differently ?

  4. America and NATO lied about reducing hostilities in Europe, aggressive expansionism by NATO is the proof.

At present you are farting green steam.

  27. Looks like he had a tough break right from the off, things look like they’r changing now for the Bhoy nopefully.

SCOTT ALLAN ditched Twitter after he was subjected to hateful abuse following his move to Celtic.

The Parkhead playmaker found the social media site to be more trouble than it was worth after his Hoops switch.

And team-mate Anthony Stokes must now be wishing he went down the same route as it threatens to cost him his Celtic career.

Stokes was handed a two-week club suspension after using his personal Twitter account to voice his anger at being left out of last week’s squad against Inverness.

The Irishman has featured just twice this season and that frustration boiled over as he was once again frozen-out, this time in the bitter cold in the Highlands.

Deila branded Stokes ‘disrespectful’ for his sarcastic tweet which broke the club’s social media policy and could see him leave the club in January.

Anthony Stokes caused a Twitter stormAnthony Stokes caused a Twitter storm

Allan found the best way to deal with the issues Twitter can bring was just to come off it completely and hasn’t been active on his account since he signed for the Hoops.

That came after some vitriolic messages were sent to him when he was at the centre of an Old Firm transfer tug of war in the summer which Celtic eventually won.

If Allan had still been using Twitter then he might have felt the urge to voice his frustration when he found his first team chances, albeit injury not helping, limited.

Instead, boss Ronny Deila held the former Hibs man up, along with Leigh Griffiths and Callum McGregor, as an example of someone who has shown a great attitude in training and patience.

Allan insists the squad haven’t been affected by the Stokes row ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Hamilton Accies but asked about Twitter, he said: “I’ve not been on it since I came here, to be honest.

“It’s probably a problem not worth having. I don’t need to go on Twitter and read negative stuff every day. It’s something I can do without. I’m glad I did it. It’s part of life for a lot of people these days but one I can do without.

“What has happened is between Anthony Stokes and the club. For me, I went on it in the first place when I was young boy in Dundee, sitting in the house with all my team-mates. There was nothing else to do.

“With social media these days, all young people are on it. It can be a good outlet sometimes, but for me personally it’s something I don’t really need. I don’t know if I’ll ever go back on it. It’s one of those things. I’ve not been on it in a while. Maybe in the future.”

Asked about the online abuse he received, Allan added: “It’s part and parcel of things. Obviously some of it is not nice but if you want to be successful in football then you are going to have to deal with a lot worse than that.”

Allan is yet to make a start for Celtic but looks to be edging closer after coming off the bench against Ajax during which he played a sublime pass to set up Leigh Griffiths before losing possession for the Dutch side’s winner.

Tony Nicoletti/Daily RecordScott Allan makes an appearance for Celtic

Allan came off the bench in the Highlands last week and now has his eyes on Accies tomorrow before the trip to Turkey next week for the Europa League dead rubber against Fenerbahce. He said: “With the stature of the club and the chance to step up a level, I have said before that it was an easy decision for me.

“I don’t think anything could compare to going to Fenerbahce or Istanbul. Everybody knows the history of the club and their rivalry with Galatasaray. It is like the Old Firm game. It is something to look forward to. Hopefully we can get a result over there as well.

“The European games are a bonus if you get to feature. I just need to focus on my game and how I’m going to get into the Celtic team. I was disappointed at the end with the second goal against Ajax but it is a learning curve for me.

“I just need to take positives from it. If you’re not getting the start you need to come on and make an impact on the game. With the squad we have at Celtic we should have players who can do that.

“People probably want to see a lot more of me and I want to get more minutes. But it has been mostly positive from what I’ve seen. It has been a step-up but it was the same when I went to West Brom from Dundee United.

“They were a Premiership team with a lot of internationals, so I kind of knew what to expect. For me, I had to be ready when I came on and try to make an impact on the game and that is what has happened in the last couple of games.

“I want to show a bit of creativity. That is what I want to add to the team.I feel ready, but the decision is up to the manager. I don’t know what he thinks, but personally I do feel as if I am ready.”

Allan – who joined his team-mates in handing out gifts at Glasgow’s new Royal Hospital for Children yesterday – admitted a knee injury denied him the chance to get his Celtic career off to a flying tartin.

SNS GroupCeltic’s Scott Allan with the £3000 cheque from the Celtic FC FoundationCeltic’s Scott Allan with the £3000 cheque from the Celtic FC Foundation

He said: “I played in a reserve game against Dundee down at Morton. After about 60 minutes, I went to chop the ball back and my studs got caught in the grass. My knee went out a bit.

“It was unfortunate and I knew right away there was something wrong. It didn’t feel strong. I got a scan and was told four weeks. After three and half weeks, I felt it again in training and that was another four weeks. It wasn’t ideal.

“I had made a few appearances before but then that happened. It was unfortunate. Obviously it was a frustrating time with the injury. I was out for six weeks. I tried to come back too early and I stalled again.

“It is about working hard on the training park and in the gym and being ready when I get a chance. I had a grade one medial ligament injury in my knee. I just wanted to get started at Celtic. It was a real setback, but that is part of football. As I say, I just need to work harder.”
