Payback for Turnbull Hutton

735

You all think you’re so smart, smugly laughing at the outcome of a game in a tournament you didn’t even know existed until recently.  Let me tell you, yesterday’s defeat of Newco Rangers was nothing short of calamitous for the road I hoped the club would take.

Ally McCoist is crucial to all the things I hope happens to Newco in the years to come.  He alone can deliver the hilarity waiting for when his team face full time footballers every week.  Who else could spend so much yet produce so little?  Who else would have the sheer brass neck to demand such a salary, even if partially deferred, in order to endorse the spivs as suitable recipients of season ticket money?  This guy is unique and of immeasurable value.

Yesterday’s defeat fundamentally weakens his position.  What now when, in true Rangers tradition, he stands in front of this year’s AGM thanking ‘yous’ for being the cream in his doughnut?  Will they still cheer at being patronised like applauding seals completely lacking in self-awareness?

Mark my words, anything which undermines McCoist is unwelcome.  A Ramsden’s Cup win would allow him to claim as much credit as he could waddle off with and would have upset no one.  They had a party at Ibrox planned, like it was 1975 all over again.  The humiliation must be significant.

The way forward for Newco Rangers is to put pressure on their board to release badly needed funds for the manager to spend in the hope of winning promotion from the Championship next season.

A word for Raith Rovers and their chairman Turnbull Hutton.  It was a Raith Rovers director who sat across the table from one of the Rangers clubs (I’ve lost track) to judge their failure to dispense their tax and other duties during season 2011-12.  McCoist then publicly demanded to know the names of the panel members.

It was Raith’s Starks Park ground which needed 24 hour security after receiving a threat to burn it to the ground following McCoist’s outburst.  Turnbull Hutton stood firm and was one of the voices which ensured the rules were applied as they stood.

Seville – The Celtic Movement

“Going into the second leg, it was all in Liverpool’s favour and on paper it was Celtic’s toughest test. That wasn’t to be the case though as Celtic achieved a very comfortable 2-0 at Anfield. Both goals were superb to top a fantastic victory. A low free kick from Alan Thompson and a wonderful strike from John Hartson were the difference in this game. Celtic went through to the semi-final 3-1 on aggregate.”

As for those who simply do not like Catholics, and like to insult us, well, anti-Catholicism is a longstanding feature of the British landscape. James MacMillan has spoken of Scottish sectarianism; and if you want to know about the hostility that Northern Irish Catholics face, well, just ask them. English anti-Catholicism is not on the same level, but it is there. As an English Catholic I have experienced it myself. At their most hurtful, anti-Catholics insinuate that I am somehow not a true Englishman, but in league with foreigners and terrorists. I remember, at the time of the Enniskillen bombing in 1987, being asked whether I was happy at the result. I have been told too that I am a supporter of General Franco simply because I am a Catholic, and best of all, that we Catholics encourage prostitution by supporting the use of the rhythm method (try and work out the logic of that – I did, but it took time).

This sectarian conversational violence is given official encouragement by the continuing discrimination in law against Catholics in this country, as well as the never too far below the surface anti-Irish and anti-Italian racism of the English middle classes, which feeds into their social snobbery as well.

Luckily I am a true Englishman in one respect, in that I never believe in replying to insults. I have Irish blood, and lots of half-Italian relations, but I also have English blood that goes back hundreds of years; and to all those who despises Catholics, and the Pope, and the Irish and Italians, my reply is…. Well, I will pray for your souls!

Tbh,I can’t remember sectarian behaviour in England, not the same way we see it in Cotland and NI.

Such sectarianism as there is usually has its basis in xenophobia.

Not that it lessens the effect,of course.

  5. Morning all – did anyone see/post this about Zenit in the Guardian from last week? Thought the Huns (and SMSM) would have tried to make something of it even if it does sound like a lot of shoite!

    Apologies if already posted/discussed.

The former Zenit Saint Petersburg defender Erik Hagen has claimed that he had paid a referee to fix a Uefa Cup match during his time at the Russian team.

The 38-year old Norwegian footballer said that it was customary to pay for match-fixing and he and his team-mates each paid a referee $3,000 (£1,800) to secure the outcome of a Uefa Cup match between 2005 and 2008.

“We had some crazy victory bonuses in Europe, $12,000. Before the match, this player says each of us should give $3,000 of the bonus to the referee, so that we could win,” Hagen told Norwegian daily VG.

“I can’t remember which match it was … I asked ‘what’s going on’ and they just said ‘You got to get used to this because that’s how it is.'”

Asked whether he had brought the issue to the attention of Uefa he said he would “tell them the same thing if they ring me”.

“Someone has to be the first to do this,” Hagen added. “There are lots of rumours about corruption in international football.”

A spokesman for the Russian team, Evgueny Gusev denied the allegations. “We are deeply astonished by the statement of Erik Hagen,” he told state news agency RIA Novosti. “Zenit has always followed and follows the principles of fair play and proves its worth only on the football field.”

Murrayfield will be more than a quarter full.

There are enough Celtic fans in Edinburgh, Lothians and Fife to fill it twice over and I reckon it will be at least 3/4’s full if not a sell out.

  9. As the son of Italian immigrants to Scotland I think I am quite well qualified to express an opinion on the treatment meted out to my forebears.

However we got our revenge by supplying the local indigenous population with vast quantities of fish suppers, pizza and ice-cream.

…and in the process making a good living out of it!
