Pedro should be in the dock

486

A week ago you and I discussed how Newco fans were more confident ahead of a Celtic game than they had ever been, while we, chastened by a lacklustre Celtic performance against them last month, thought we had a game on our hands at Hampden.

Five days after a very one-sided Scottish Cup semi-final and sentiment in both camps has shifted. Newco were awful on a level that it is hard to do justice on the page. Celtic were imperious in possession and attacked with a swagger.

Don’t let what happened a week ago cloud your judgement. I’ve been going to Ibrox for over 30 years, and many on here have been going twice as long, but no matter how poor old Rangers were in that time, we seldom had it easy. On my first visit there we scored four second half goals against a truly awful outfit, but 45 minutes into the game we were two down and struggling.

If you win at Ibrox, you have played well. Celtic will need to be unscrupulously faithful to their tactical system. Brendan will know how to prepare the players for this.  They will need the concentration and energy to deliver the performance.

I have some worries for Pedro (apologies, but I’m not sure if he’s going to be around long enough to make it worthwhile learning how to spell his surname). His 10-second principle is a case in point.

In the interview Chris Davies gave to a few Celtic bloggers, including myself, he explained that when Celtic lose possession, the players are told to spend up to six seconds pressing directly for the ball. If they fail to win possession back in this period, they are to drop back into defensive positions.

They have been trained to do this since preseason. It’s risky, and you will note that they do it every week in domestic football, but the technique was used sparingly in the Champions League group stage. The risk of a Barcelona-type team passing through the press is dangerous, as when players are pressing, they are out of position.

This is how modern football is played, but Pedro should be cautious.  You cannot reeducate players overnight.  If you attempt to and fail, it’s the manager’s responsibility.  In fact, this quote from Pedro is exactly what you should expect when you try to force a new system onto a team midseason:

“When we analysed the game in some moments of the game some players were acting in one direction, which was the right direction and other players were not doing the same thing at the same time.”

This was clearly not the outcome Pedro expected, but his explanation suggests he has a lot to learn about how to tactically change football teams.

What’s worse, instead of shielding his players by taking ownership of the blame, he put the players in the dock.  It is no surprise that you can detect grumblings of discontent emanating from loyal Ibrox sources.

Taking about “in the dock”, Sir David Murray is currently in the witness box at Craig Whyte’s trial.  Proceedings are enthralling, but we’ll catch up with that later.  A point worth reiterating:

It is acceptable to report on what was said at court, but unacceptable to prejudice a witness or defendant with your view on that individual, or on evidence presented.  So stick to what was said – that’s fascinating enough.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our auction to play in a match at Celtic Park on Monday, to benefit Celtic FC Foundation.  It closes around noon today, so last chance!!

This has been a loooooooong debate.on here.

    It seems either is appropriate.

However as the Huns took so much offence at Kirsty McCabe’s comparison. That’ll do nicely for me.

PS: The level of abuse that pregnant Kirsty took at the time was sick ,sad and totally outrageous.Typical Hun behaviour.

  2. Does anybody know, is Jack Irvine on the list of witnesses still to be called up?

If so and he confirms DM was fully appraised of the Ticketus deal, KABOOM!!

    Big Jimmy ….

Courts are open to the public, and anyone can attend to watch … but, there are a few usual exceptions – (i) (witnesses who will be called are usually required to wait outside the court until they are called – so their evidence is not changed by what other witnesses say, and (ii) often sexual assault cases, or cases involving children, where the Judge can close the court to the public – courts are open to the public, and anyone can go in and watch.

Strange final statement from Donald. Spends the day going through Murray then shifts the blame to Bain, Johnston and co and the last minute.

    ————————

With that he is establishing a narrative that Murray got the club into a mess then left it in the hands of people who didn’t have clue and made a bigger mess. His client came along and bought an already very messy, smelly thing.

Findlay doesn’t care about pinning blame on Murray in particular, he cares about diverting blame from his client.

Thanks for you updates today btw.

  14. MIKE IN TORONTO,

Big Jimmy … just remember … this is not a football match …. so, if you go, and you dont like something the judge says, DO NOT shout ‘who is the Mason in the Black?’ …. there will be a whole lof them … it could confuse them.

  16. John Higgins DONE by The Ref and The Marker, who replaced the q ball in the wrong place and giving an advantage to his opponent boring, boring Hawkins ( who never said anything either, so he’s also a feckin cheat ) !

we Celtic Bhoys got cheated everywhere.

  17. Right about tomorrow…

I deliberately didn’t watch the semi final. I will watch tomorrow’s game. Deliberately? Perhaps.

I think that this is an important game for Celtic psychologically in terms of next season. If Celtic dish out a humping (or even a commanding win) then Sevco need to wait until next season for a “right of reply”. That means they will go into the first meeting next season dreading it, given that they are very likely to have a summer of upheaval.

This also applies to our remaining matches against Aberdeen and Hearts. Whitewashes this season against those two give Celtic a tremendous psychological edge for the first game next season…

Well, that and the fact that our team is light-years ahead of all of them…

    :)

  20. ” WHO’S THE MASON IN THE BLACK” ?

  23. Regards the £1.7m that Whyte was supposed to have put aside for the repairs to Ibrox as instructed by the HSE. If he didn’t pay the wee tax case, did he follow through the repairs. If not did someone else? There is a real possibility the works remain outstanding.

  24. Here’s a wee bit of useless trivia as we await the battle tomorrow, and battle it will be in the den of revulsion

Mrs. TT has a book here called “All Our Yesterdays” which is an account of the area served by the Lennox Herald and written by a former editor who I believe was a friend of EDB.

Among the many wee stories of the area there is an account of local football players who achieved some fame, especially Celtic ones.

One of those that I was unaware of until a couple of years ago was Alec Brady and that’s only through the wonderful Celtic Graves Society who in cooperation with their Everton counterparts sought out his last resting place.

Alec started his career with his local junior side Renton Thistle before moving south and played for numerous clubs including Newcastle West End, Sunderland, Burnley, back to Sunderland again before being convinced to join Everton by their captain Andrew Hannah, also from Alec’s hometown of Renton and a member of their famous World Cup winning side along with James Kelly and Neilly McCallum. In his second season with the Toffees they were crowned English League Champions.

The ambitious Celtic board were aware of Alec, who was described as “a wee barrel of a man” and were able to tempt him back to Glasgow in the early days of the club where he partnered Neilly McCallum on the wing. His stay at Celtic Park was brief and after just one season he returned to England and joined Sheffield Wednesday. Disappointing when you look at his record, Glasgow Cup, Charity Cup and Scottish Cup, their first ever major trophy, they also narrowly lost out in the League to Dumbarton, but the offers were in for the money down south and like other football mercenaries at the time (and now I hasten to add) he was chasing it down.

Alec Brady had the honour of winning the premier domestic Cup medals on both sides of the borders (the FA Cup & the Scottish Cup) to become one of the first to have done so, and this was at a time when they were regarded as the pinnacle of the football world. He eventually returned to Scotland to play with Clydebank in 1899 before returning to his hometown team, Renton where he ended his playing career.

After retiring from football he stayed in the Renton, where he lived with his family until his death in 1913 aged 43. He was buried in the parish graveyard of Millburn Church, Renton which was marked with a memorial headstone in April 2016 by The Celtic Graves Society and Everton Heritage Society.

He has many relatives still living in the village and surrounding area including Sister Elizabeth Brady SND former head teacher at St Michael’s Primary in Dumbarton. Some Brucehill and Castlehill weans would have been oblivious to who their headmistress was, as would have been their parents.

If it hadn’t been for the Everton Heritage Society and our own Celtic Graves one Alec Brady would have remained a virtual Celtic unknown. Although not a Celtic great he played an integral part in our amazing history as being part of the first of over 100 trophies won by the club.
