When something doesn’t make sense, assume you do not have all the details. Read practically anywhere online and you will learn it does not make sense for Celtic to sit on a pile of cash, with a team which requires strengthening. We can agree on that; it doesn’t make sense.
So we could assume that we have full knowledge and that despite the obvious need, Celtic would allow a player they (i) want as first choice for a position and (ii) are able to afford, but (iii) would risk losing the player for the want of spending a tiny amount more of the bank balance. Again, we can agree, this does not make sense.
Or, perhaps we don’t have all the information. Why would anyone think that something which does not make any sense is reality? If this is you, I suggest you don’t Google your symptoms.
Often, the first deal that’s done for a player is with the agent. He will confirm his player only has eyes for your club and that contract requirement. If another club enters the race, the agent will let you know you have been outbid. After this is in place, you make an offer to the club. There is a world of difference between signing a £3m player for £3m, or signing him for £9m. Buyers and sellers have different incentives and there are more wasteful buyers and wise ones.
It would also be a mistake to assume clubs have hard preferences between candidates. They seldom do, so they pursue the options available to them, which helps inform the final decision. I know of situations at Celtic recently when the manager has sat on a decision until the last moment before making a decision – as he is entitled.
We hopefully agree that none of us possess perfect knowledge. There are things we do not know and that is absolutely true every transfer window. Why anyone works themselves up into a frenzy by assuming otherwise is interesting.

Forgive my ignorance
If we do not get past the CL Qualfiers do we go straight onto EL Group stages
or do we play a EL Qualifier ??
67ECW
____
We’d go straight into EL group stage.
67 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS
If we lose our CL play-off we go straight into the Eurooa League 36.

……….
Nobody is talking about standing still or going backwards , rather the manager needs to be more canny in his frequent statements about quality …. The implication drawn by the media is that we therefore lack of quality …… that may well be a true statement of fact but it sticks in the throat for the manager to keep droning on about it …
I hope Brendan signs a new contract , the fact he hasn’t as yet is an elephant in the room and like it or not will have an impact on transfers hopefully at the margins.

Very likely we have raised 25m from sales and sell ons so far, spent 3m, plenty money to spend no matter what tournament we are playing in,that’s without touching the bank balance, it’s just another excuse for this board not to spend, we need players do you want to go into the season relying on Tilio, Forrest to stay fit, Yang, the midfield needs attention some outs for me as well as ins, and decisions need to be made about strikers, who stays who goes or is loaned and buys. I don’t sense urgency from anyone at Celtic.

Just imagine we do not get into the CL and they do, will they piss about on signings?
Paul 67,
Most fans don’t really care about the intricacies of the transfer process.
The club employs numerous persons to deal with that.
We do want to be the best we can be and ultimately the proof will be in the pudding
Are we being the best we can be ??

I forgot about Barkas
Oh we have had some mishaps !!!!!!
67ECW
——————————
Indeed ‘Chairbhoy’ has a depressing list of fails, he posts periodically. A couple of them are back in contention for a first team start a few days before the first game.
Mythological reasons for failure to sign the quality clearly required as we ran out of gas, last season are being prepared. Brendan Rodger’s has described how transfers work ( again ) and hasn’t mentioned slowness yet, as did all the previous managers before him, and probably will after him.
The fact that it’s ‘only’ July doesn’t disguise the fact that we’re in ‘another difficult market ‘. The perception is always underpinned by a huge number of supporters, sharing the notion that we have a PLC that could, but don’t even simple things at Celtic.
BSR…about an hour ago…”Did we have all the knowledge for Barkas ?”
Yes, we did. Turkeybhoy told us how brilliant he was going to be for us…(smiley face)

How do you squeeze transfer negotiations in with all that to do -)))))

Our chances of qualifying for the CL greatly reduce after this season .
—-
This year represents our last reasonable chance of qualifying given how we’re run.
For the sake of nostalgia, we should bring Bitton back and play him as CB for our annual CL qualifying horror show in the years ahead.
Good evening CQN.
Enjoyed your leader Pablo.
I’d always recommend a second reading.
Sometimes the first pass gets your blood up.
Nothing contentious in it for me.
Nobody is called an idiot or a peasant.
Doesn’t say the board can’t be criticised.
It does go to lengths to remind it’s consumers there may be elements to this shenanigans of which we are not aware.
But we knew that.
Still … I do wish it was done quicker.
Any player coming in after this week?
IMHO is unlikely to be able to make any meaningful contribution to the Play Off round.
Ziggydoc
I think there is a little bit more of a parachute payment now for losing play off teams but obviously it is nowhere near the value for qualification.

Thanks – without sounding defeatist, and I know the CL money is a big deal, but I sometimes wonder if a run in the EL might not be a bit more exciting than clinging on in the CL
Our chances of winning the EL are probably not great but they are better than winning the CL
Dilema !!

Ref Barkas
We were let down by a keeper who had committed himself to us only to change his mind at the 11th hour. By that time our experienced second choice keeper had decided he needed to play and agreed to join Hearts. This left us in a very difficult situation in a world where doing all normal due diligence was a bit more tricky.
What we didn’t do well was push the boundaries on all the Covid restrictions like our rivals did. We had a whole bunch of young players living on their own thousands of miles from home with nothing better to do than read the shite projected by sad supporters with little else to do than opine online and in the media.
Some had limited English and an impossible task to acclimatise. Sadly our managers well being was not great at that time and as a club we did not support those representing us at that sad time.
Our rivals broke every rule in the book including allowing hundreds of ‘vip’ into their stadium in a game day. Eg Walter hardly missed a game. Their tests were specially audited by a hand picked firm.
We were actually neck and neck with them going into game 11 in the league. No var and a few bad decisions and our fans were manning the barricades even although we were still within touching distance.
Obviously it then fell apart and the muscle was that there were not more casualties and more long lasting impacts.
I am delighted to see Barkas (no English no friends and no support in a strange city) has recovered and is doing well.
Many mistakes by many were made that season. Barkas was only one.

Apparently John has apologised to Russell for the handball ‘no penalty to Rainjurz decision’ verse Middleborough.

If we draw Basel (one of 5 possible) and do get knocked out or even win then you know what that means ?
At worst a European semi final.
The year they did knock us out we actually won nothing domestically but got to a European final …..I can’t imagine our faithful would put up with that this season but we lauded MON et al that year.

I feel this about Yang
He is currently our best option on the right
Not because he is the best
But because we sold the best and have not replaced them
I would love Yang to prove me wrong and be the next Kuhn, but I wouldn’t bet on it
67ECW
PS just for a bit of positive thinking
It is like;y we have lined up 2 or 3 quality first team ready footballers and we are negotiating the details before they join us !!!!!
1967 EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS
I agree. In the unlikely event that we lose our CL play-off, the Europa League would be a great consolation, offering us a superb chance to go far in Eurooean competition, with a chance of even winning it.
We beat Basel in 63/4 and reach CWC semi that season losing 4-3 on aggregate to MTK.
We beat Basel in 69/70 on way to EC final losing 2-1 to Feyenoord
We beat them in 73/4 on way to listing to Athletico 2-0 in EC semi
We lost to them in 02/3 on way to Seville in the UEFA cup final in Seville.
Maybe they are a draw we want ?
Burnley78 on 28th July 2025 8:30 pm
Kind words regarding Barkas you are to be applauded for you humility
You have made me think I should be more sympathetic
However regarding Basel you are exaggerating the possibilities, but Im all in, fingers crossed for a trip to Switzerland
67ECW
PS on a lighter note what’s so good about Switzerland ??
The flag is a plus sign
jakob Breum plays like Mikey Johnson but with less pace! don’t see how this improves 1st team – not happy with the level of player we are looking at, especially for key wide positions , vital to this team.
Just logged in to update Burnley78 on Vasilis Barkas’ perceived lack of English.
You need to stop shooting from the hip so often on here; when you make mistakes like this, there are people in here only too happy to make capital out of your mistakes and use them to invalidate anything else you.might say.

I think after two years BR had made a decision on Yang with which the majority of supporters would probably agree. His enforced first place eligibility is there no question, but so is the failure of planning. On the subject of wide players it’s a long time since Jota was injured, and with Kuhn sold, the list should have done and dusted.
It’s not the way to run a big club IMO, selling your best players, and knowing you’re going to sell them, needs cast iron plans for replacements.
The review carried out by Celtic when BR came back in is threatening to show ‘no workie’ signs IMO. We will sign players no question, but have we avoided the dreaded “scrambling about to see what’s available ” traditional Celtic scenario. Finally, on wide men sell Maeda and we lose a winger and a CF ( which is another matter )
Will the supporters get the blame if all that happens?
When is deadline for signing payers to play in the qualifying round?
Players *
WBC,
Smiley face,my arse. Was it me that signed Barkas?.Was it me that scouted him and thought him a good keeper?.Was it me,and not the Greek sports media, that nicknamed him”The Wall”for his performances?.Was it me who gave him30 odd caps for Greece?.
Did I think at the time, going by all reports,he would be a good signing, yes. What did you think at the time?.He would be a disaster?.Aye,fekin right.
A long time to keep bringing up the same pish about Barkas, but your always trying wee digs..You got something against me,say it.I hate snydes, hiding behind ( Smiley faces )

👍 Efcharisto…
Turkeybhoy…
Sorry. Did I touch a nerve?
Relajate!
This Thursday a friend informs me if you want players for the Champions league qualifiers
Stebhoy,
You said nearly the same thing about Balikwisha.Having never seen either,I,and everyone else, has to rely on our recruitment guys, and BR.If,as you say, both are a waste of money, and not good enough,we might still have the same recruitment team that signed Barkas !!!!!!!!!!
( SMILEY FACES )
Maybe your just being a tiny tad harsh.
WBC,
Still at it ya clown.Just fek off.
Yawn!
A perusal of Celtic cyberspace has brought much needed clarity to the topic raised by Paul67.
Jakob Breum – we won’t pay the going rate and he’s not good enough.
Recently I read something from a blogger who believes the Celtic board “lowball” that we could have signed Adam Idah for much less.
Maybe the evil directors are concurrently guilty of highballing and lowballing?
And my latest juicy find.
A winger we were DEFINITELY interested in?
… is too soft, too weak, cuts inside too much and doesn’t link up with his team mates as well as he should.
I know because comments from Feb-24 say so.
Guy’s name is Kühn or something.
Turns he is not a very naughty boy but is actually the messiah.
Nobody told me there would be days like these, strange days indeed.
