Performing with an edge, naked opportunism

1065

If you were a professional football player, you would love to be in the Celtic dressing room tomorrow evening.  You would have the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself; put in a big, meaningful performance.  Record a bit of history and create a uniquely memorable victory.

There are some players who are fraught with anxiety on such occasions, but there are others who NEED these games, need an edge, to reach their peak.  If we have a team full of the latter, Legia are in for a torrid night.

I’m doing my best to ignore the naked opportunism in our media this week.  There is no point complaining about it, lose heavily and you become vulnerable to those who live to revel in a Celtic defeat.  Don’t lose and you don’t give them (friends and foes alike) a chance.

We’ve been here before.  Artmedia, Braga, Utrecht, Sion (despite the reprieve) and Karagandy all exposed an aching heart.  European football is unforgiving, try to transition and you’ll find someone ready to exploit, but that doesn’t mean you are wrong to transition.

We might talk about this transition more later in the month but we have a game to win first.  Can’t wait.

Check out the fantastic work by the cyclists who are taking part in the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014 on 6 September. You can join them – all you need is a bike. Get involved, you’ll be delighted you did, I promise. Read about it here.

  4. Imagine living in a country were it’s peoples political opinion is opressed, it’s natural resources syphoned off, it’s political voice unheard, it’s poor begging for food on a daily basis and in that country you have a chance to change things without the need to take up arms or kill your neighbour!

What a lucky bunch we are to be afforded this opportunity!

All my usually facetiousness aside it is the absolute responsibility of evey single one of us to make an informed decision on Scottish Independence and vote democratically having taken some time to seek out the information from both the Yes and the No camps to make your decision. If you are going to make your decision based on your political party allegience, your football team, your religion, your parents view or any single issue then you will be letting not only yourself down but any children to follow.

Vote No or Yes but at least make it an informed vote.

I jumped the fence from the Nae’s way back when I decided to take an interest outwith my football colours. Others likely have decided not to change their view or remain with their original stance but i would hope that at the very least everyone votes from an informed position.

the information is readily available from both camps via the internet.

Sorry I had taxi duties to do!

I know it’s a big shout to leave out McGregor especially when he’s scored in the last 2 games and we need at least 3 tomorrow night.

However, for me there’s goals in LG, AW and KC if KC is given a free role behind the front 2.

We will require stability behind them and that’s why I’d have Henderson in place of McGregor because of his defensive qualities.

He’s also known to score a few which is a plus.

    “Mate.

I have yet to see any significant Islamic or Jewish organisation condemn any of the atrocities of either side.

Palestine……the big picture.I see the Palestinians as far more sinned against than sinning. And I`m referring to the last 100 years.

The tragedy for the friends of Israel, and I have no wish to see the destruction of that state,is that their govt. doasn`t give a damn about public opinion.Nor has it for decades.

They are sowing the seeds of their own destruction.

God willing our countries stay well and truly out of it,but that`s hard when so many immigrants are prepared to take arms, usually on one side.

    Now that`s a real concern.

Whether you are in Sydney or Solihull.

All in all,I need my hit of Celtic.

At least it will take our minds off these issues.

    HAIL BLOODY HAIL”

Macjay, all it takes is a couple of seconds research to find evidence of significant Jews and Muslims condemning Israel and Hamas. Mind you I don’t know what counts as significant to you. How about the World Muslim Congress ?

Both sides are ignoring the protests.

Isn’t the whole YES campaign based on the single issue of independence.

    Btw I’m, as yet, undecided.

  12. HT, If I may, I don’t think it is down to a simple Yes or No.

It’s about saying up all the issues that surround it.

It’s a single decision, Yes or No, not a single issue.

Economics, education, energy, foreign policy, EU, currency and a whole plethora of other issues surround the one decision.

Hope you don’t mind me answering.

I’ve been away, but noticed your post about match-fitness, as you,yet again, refer to 2 German footballers as looking ‘anorexic’.

I’m sure that you mean no malice by this, but it is inappropriate to use this analogy with what is the biggest killer of all psychiatric illnesses.

Apart from the destruction Anorexia Nervosa causes to the vital organs of the body over time, it can also cause serious damage to the bones. Many anorexics, even if they recover, face osteoporosis at some point in their lives. It is therefore absurd to talk about professional athletes in this context, who need strong, healthy bones, not soft, damaged ones.

The main problem with your choice of words is the association of successful athletes with Anorexia.

We are often told that children read this blog. While Anorexia is usually associated with teenage girls, there is now more pressure on boys too with regard to body image, the need to have a ‘six-pack’, for example. To give the impression, accidentally or not, that looking anorexic is a good thing sends out a very dangerous message to those who may be susceptible to the illness.

There are plenty of other words which describe athletes of the build of Muller and Klose more appropriately, which I’d ask you to use instead.

Your moniker, like mine, contains the name of the charity set up to support victims of Eating Disorders and their families, BEAT. It is much -needed, mental illness still being very much the poor relation of physical illness in the NHS.

With all the support for other illnesses that there has been on here over the years, I’d like to think we wouldn’t want to undermine the vital work BEAT does, along with those doctors who work in Eating Disorder services.

    Hail Hail.

  15. Doc

Not at all it’s a blog after all :-)

My point though is that ultimately the YES campaign are claiming that this plethora of diverse issues will be dealt with in an independent Scotland which is only achieveable by voting YES.

I think we could end up playing semantics here though Doc as we’re merely looking at the same thing from different angles.

Travelling early tomorrow so sending my good luck wishes to Celtic today.

Don’t care if there’s forty thousand, four thousand, four hundred, forty or four (Ronny, JC, Kenneth and me), I’ll be proud to stand and cheer the Bhoys from first whistle to last kick.

Win, lose or draw may God bless and keep safe every Celtic and Legia supporter this week.

  17. Does anyone know what the lower tier at Murrayfield in its entirety holds and how many tickets have been sold to Legia supporters?

  18. HT

    Ah! I get you now.

It’s a single vote YES (see what I did there – subliminal).

but the single vote is a POSITIVE vote that should be made balancing all the issues from an informed position, including Economic, Education, Health, Social, Religios or non-religous, Political.

So YES I disagree with you.

    Re: The Independence vote..

..I’ve still not seen any or heard any convincing arguments for voting no or yes. All I can see is politicians flapping their gums as usual. Till the day the vote happens I’ll still be undecided.

  20. Just Another Tim on

One of the key points for me in the Independence vote is foreign policy. Something I have heard little of from the Yes campaign.
