Perils of rushing a managerial appointment

787

Getting a managerial appointment right is difficult. A number of things went in our favour when we landed Brendan Rodgers, not least the market for managers in England. The days when a club the size of Liverpool would recruit a manager from Swansea, as they did with Brendan in 2012, are gone.

The era when Arsenal would risk a manager from Grampus Eight, as they did with Wenger, or Manchester United would take someone from Aberdeen, as with Ferguson, even now seem bizarre.

It’s relatively easy to get a short-term boost from a managerial appointment which would take the pressure off board and even players, but football has a habit of bringing reality to the fore quickly. A defeat or two can make years of forward planning difficult to achieve.

I like the strategy of appointing a caretaker if you lose a manager midseason. This buys you time to test the market before appointing an available and familiar name. We have had a few caretakers in our time: Kenny Dalglish won the League Cup, while Frank Connor managed to retire undefeated before handing the reigns to Luigi.

Kenny took over a decent, if poorly managed, squad, while Frank steadied the ship after Liam Brady’s ill-fated tenure ended. Their task was straightforward, get the players pulling in the same direction. If you limit the caretaker’s remit to this, he should do OK.

Had we appointed a permanent replacement in the weeks after John Barnes ‘resigned’ we would have missed out on Martin O’Neill and all that followed. Taking your time can pay.

I’m also open to the idea of a director of football. There is no right or wrong policy on this subject. Changing a manager is the biggest upheaval a club will face (a normal club, anyway). Often the coaches and scouts go too, but if you have a director of football controlling recruitment strategy, for example, you recruit a coach to match the existing strategy. You also don’t need to start scouting players for different roles from scratch.

If we were sitting with a youth coach in charge of the first team right now I’d be doing my best ‘Calm down’ routine. A decision rushed, or worse, a decision made because you are terrified to visit Celtic Park in three weeks, would be the worst of all worlds.  Take your medicine at Celtic Park but get it right for June.

I don’t know if you have ever tried to get home from Celtic Park after a club function or private function held in Celtic Park anytime of the week.

A hotel will certainly make it’s money from these events as well as match day events and any athletics or cycling events at the veladrome.

I doubt it will end up looking anywhere near as impressive as the architects drawings detailed due to cost but no matter it will still be advantageous to our club to have this facility on our GCC ground. :@-)))

Might be an idea to let rooms to the media at enhanced rates too.

  5. Well the good news on the Celtic development didn’t last long, just heard that their is a major Sevco announcement tomorrow.

They are building 3 hotels, 1 on Old Kent Road, 1 on Regent Street and 1 on Euston Road….

What’s that? Hotel developments? We don’t report on football club’s hotel developments unless they come with hovver-pitch, casino and helipad and are built in Govan.

Maybe they’ll do a report on the Govan Tesco Extra plans next year…

    Old Tim,

No suits and ties required. This will be a very relaxed celebratory dinner possibly in a somewhat special building with some music and a bit of a singalong.

Your usual sartorial elegance will suffice.

  9. Good evening friends.

Been looking at the remaining fixtures between now and the split and in my honest opinion I forecast that the league positions and points after 33 games will be as follows –

    1. Celtic – 93

    2. Aberdeen – 68

    3. The Rangers – 55

    4. St Johnstone – 52

    5. Hearts – 50

ps – By my calculations we clinch the title on 2 April with a draw at Tynecastle

pps – we also drop 2 points on 16 April away to Ross County

ppps – yes, this is a JoboDoesForecastsCSC moment which I intend to copy and then paste on 17 April ;-)

  10. Jeepers Yorkbhoy, If my memory serves me correct and I haven’t played the game for nigh on 55 years nor looked it up tonight but from memory,

If they put one up on Old Kent Road they may have to build one in Whitechapel, Euston is it Angel Islington & Pentonville Road, Regent Street, is it Bond Street, I’m kind of stuck for the 3rd one, I think it’s Oxford street, I know they were a Green set.

The condescending reply I’ve received from you I don’t feel justifies a response. Quite disgusted to be honest, however, I’ll try again.

I pointed out the the Celtic board deserve to be applauded at times (today’s announcement is a fine example) and pilloried at others.

You asked for an example of an occasion when the board have turned their stick on our own supporters. I provided that. It was a factual account of what has happened in the aftermath of the game against Newco at Parkhead. Four supporters have had their details passed to the police for displaying a banner. The 4 have also had their season tickets withdrawn by Celtic. What is essential in all of this is that Celtic have stated that they had NO PROBLEM with the content of the banner.

So far all of the above is merely an accurate recount of actual events, no allegations or conjecture.

A couple of things are worth adding.

There was an unwritten agreement that Celtic wouldn’t pass details to the police unless a serious crime had been committed.

Is displaying a banner a serious crime?

A banner that Celtic have stated they had NO PROBLEM with!

Data protection is a bit of a mine field.

TTR, I’m pretty sure unwittingly and unconsciously, provided evidence that there is nothing in Celtic’s stadium legislation which states that Celtic are under any obligation or legal authority to provide ‘evidence’ to the authorities.

Unfortunately, you’ve done somersaults in your attempts to excuse the actions of the board.

I refer you to the beginning of this post. The Celtic board deserve the praise they receive for some things but they’re also deserving of criticism on occasion. This is one such occasion.

I’ll politely request that if you choose to reply please do so with a greater degree of respect than your last post to me. Thanks.

    Ernie,

with the increased traffic at both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, Central Scotland is more and more accessible to central Europe and beyond as a destinational venue.

There are a host of corporate events in Glasgow but at certain times booking a function room of the right size can be difficult. Celtic already provide decent mid range corporate function facilities via the Kerrydale and other suits.

However, there are real possibilities for a hotel in this location, especially if Celtic use their commercial nous in the right way.

I for one have taken a European City break with the specific intention of taking in a football match and/or a concert in the city of my choosing.

If Celtic and/or the hotel operator seek a travel partnership with or through the leading European Clubs, then there is a whole industry and affinity group to exploit within the proper and best possible meaning of the word.

A deal which offers flights, accommodation, museum tours, the match experience and whatever else Glasgow has to offer on any given date could see the hotel with regular traffic and the club benefit from additional match day and merchandise revenue as well as establishing a bigger footprint among European Football fans whose primary team could be anyone.

Further, if the Champions League group stage is extended to a larger 48 team format with the possibility of a greater number of European games, then there is another regular income stream.

Even an extended Europa league would make a difference.

A big factor will be what other attractions and outlets follow on the vacant ground round about the site.
