Peter Lawwell on strategy and reality

Very pleased Peter Lawwell has opened up a bit today (in The Sun, I know…) on the workings of the club, I hope this is the start of a trend in more regular communication.  If there’s logical explanations for Celtic’s actions, inactions, views and general strategy, we should be giving them far more often than we have.

On the club’s financial strategy, his comments were not far removed from yesterday’s blog, “if we take the club into £20m worth of debt, and [Champions League qualification] doesn’t happen, where does that leave us?

“For a Scottish club to owe that kind of money leads to trouble. You don’t have to look very far [Govan] to see the consequences [administration and/or liquidation]of people trying things which ‘might’ happen.”

We’re only a few years from that touchstone but the point still needs to be made.

On one point, there’s probably a bit of work to do: “You’ve got social media and the bloggers, posters and trolls who think they know what’s going on at the club. They don’t.

“They don’t have all the information. The reality is different from their perception and I need to deal with reality every day.”

Social media will never have all the information, but football clubs need to find out ways to harness what is still a new and emerging phenomenon.  At the very least, they need to find ways to head off wildly inaccurate and damaging fantasies.

Everyone believes they deal with reality, not perception.  I laugh when I see new posters here saying “I’ve no axe to grind, but…….”  None of us believe we have an axe to grind, we all believe we bring reality to the debate.

Self-awareness in this respect is not part of the human condition.  If people experience, see and read certain realities, perceptions consistent with those realities are perceived as reality.

The only way around this for the club is to ensure Celtic fans have access to sufficient verifiable realities to offset perceived realities.  Let’s keep the verifiable realities coming, soon if possible.

Really hope Leigh is playing tonight, and he gets his 40th goal.  It would be a fitting achievement for a thorough professional – who never lets an opportunity to show Celtic fans how genuine his delight to be here is.

There’s a Football Forum at The Iron Horse pub, West Nile St, tomorrow [Thursday] from 18:30 until 21:00.  Three authors will talk about football within Scottish society.

Our own Alex Gordon, author or Winds of Change, Caesar & the Assassin, A Bhoy called Bertie, Celtic the Awakening and more, “will provide stories of and insights into the integrity of the Scottish football press and media”.  Alex is a former editor of the Sunday Mail, so this one should be interesting.

Sandy Jamieson, author of Celtic Submari: a new model for football relationships, among others, will also be speaking.  The third panelist is Alan Ness, author of the football novel, A Man’s Game.

There’s a £5 (to Dogs Trust charity or discount off a book) charge at the door, no tickets in advance.  Introduce yourself to Alex, if you’re there.

I never noticed any balance from any of our Zionist contributors nor any bile.

I did understand the same persistent rhetoric and falsehoods offered by all zionists when questioned.

But then you are like them entrenched in Zionist propaganda.

There are some very good books written and published by zionists who outline their strategy on how to win a propaganda war.

The simplest being that anyone who questions Zionist propaganda is anti-semetic.

The next on the list being anyone who is murdered by the zionists are terrorists as seen recently in the slaughter of civilians in Gaza.

And most recently that children under 12 are now subject to terrorist legislation, and still we are told they are the champions of democracy.

I doubt very much you would be interested in any of the above publications as they do not reinforce your beliefs and you have no intention like those you commend in being objective so I won’t waste my time on yips subject any further, suffice to say yesterday’s argument proved a point, zionists are the exactly the same as the jihadists, when they can’t win the discussion they resort to violence to enforce their doctrine, which is why they support each other.

As a long time admirer, supporter and defender of Peter Lawwell, I find that I cannot explain or condone the decision to choose The Sun as the preferred outlet for his interview. Very disappointing.

Not posted in a quite a while now, and very rarely read the posts, although I do read Paul’s articles most days, but have to say this, first an advert on CQN for of all things Sevco season ticket renewals* (possibly mentioned last here last night?) and now to read our CEO gave an interview to The Sun?

Seriously??? Days after the Families parade round the Celtic Park pitch???

So far disconnected from a lot of the support its beyond belief.

    HAIL! HAIL!

    * = I made that comment slightly tongue-in-cheek as I know that the adverts are based keywords on the site – which speaks volumes in its own way – and that Paul had no say over the content.

Hopefully soon there will a genuine report that Res12 has been lodged in Switzerland.

The problem IMHO, with a blog, any blog, is that some posters, desperate form cyber-recognition, cyber-notoriety will rush to post any inchorent chittering, even if it is a repost of what they posted the previous week in order to assuage their appetite. If it is thereapeutic for them that, too, is OK but it does detract from those wishing to argue for, or against, the item being discussed.

At least for the rest of today might we discuss this evening’s match. HH

As I suggested earlier today,I think he realised the problem with an exclusive to that paper and tried to circumvent it by putting the word out that The Sun published earlier than planned an interview given to many.

I seriously doubt the motives of anyone supporting the CEO on this.

  14. First and foremost, I am sorry that I ever has any submissions published on CQN. I no longer wish to be associated with it.

This piece, by Paul67, is a load of DPP (Daily Pravda Pish). We’ve lived through those days already.

His attempted flippant, off the cuff remark (The S*n, I know) is, possibly one of the ‘foulest’ remarks I’ve seen on here to date.

Those backing him, with their deflect and deny garbage, are utterly spineless. They are as bad as those who peddle the continuation myth.

JFH, if you ever want a dsicussion on the centuries old continuation myth about ‘your’ Lord give me a shout anytime. Don’t bring a pathetic, infantile deflection into a serious error of misjudgement by a CEO who is continuoualy treating us a morons.

May ‘your’ God go with you. Mind you, I sincerely hope he has more important issues to deal with than the corrupt nature of Scottish football.

    Abysmal article. Good day!

It would have been much more ‘in-touch’ and certainly more interesting if PL had held fire until Sunday’s game and then gone on to the pitch with a microphone and spoken directly to the support…

  16. It becomes more and more surreal with Pauls cheerleading article.

It’s ticks all the age old boxes.

Revives the ghost of the Huns to scare you (surprised Leeds weren’t mentioned too)

Paul tells us the club need to learn how to harness social media (wot like cqn Paul).

Then we have a wee lecture on realities and indeed verifiable realities.

A wee question paul(don’t worry it is of course rhetorical because you won’t engage with any debate for fear of being exposed). What reality is it that you live in where Celtic are doing great?

The utter arrogance, laziness and complacency is astounding. Wow.

And poor old winnings. Mate you keep getting led up the garden path. At some point you need to take stock and realise you are being played.

    Honest it’s jam tomorrow. Honest………honest…………..

The one good thing in all of this? Revolutions happen when incompetence matches ignorance and arrogance.

All of which. Are on display at Celtic park.

It will happen. But perhaps too late to save Celtic.

Hugely disappointed in Peter Lawwell’s judgment (or lack thereof), firstly in selecting the medium for the interview, and secondly the content.

Has he not read any of the avalanche of correspondence pouring into Celtic Park? Does he think this interview will promote the selling of season tickets? We are not asking him to find 20 million behind a couch – we are asking that it not be squandered on a raft of useless signings such as Boeriggter..

What was required was a clear statement of policy for next season, including the strategy for Resolution 12, to assuage the mounting concerns of huge numbers of fans and shareholders. Mr. Lawwell’s thinking in incomprehensible to me and his rationale inexplicable. We simply don’t want his frame of reference to be the entity in Govan.

Like other bloggers, I wondered whether he just didn’t get it, or he doesn’t care. I fear it may be a combination of both.

Maybe he can give us an insight into how he plans to grow turnover through new income streams, he is surely not reliant on the governing bodies here to do so and if Celtic win them we get a pittance.

If its the status quo we are going nowhere but backwards, I dont buy papers so I have no access to the interview with the Sun, we do have a website which has nothing on it regarding this interview.

  23. Rangers embarked on a strategy of year on year spending more than they took in for two decades. All the while they withheld tax via an illegal tax strategy.

I’m failing to see what relevance this has to Celtic. I’m getting tired of hearing about Rangers being liquidated every time we the fans want to see investment in the team.

I’ve no idea how renewals are going but those holding off will not be encouraged from what we’re hearing from Lawwell or his lackeys.

  27. The leading article is a clear indicator of how far this blog has strayed from it’s original purpose.

Why not just repackage the Celtic view?

That the interview was given in such a toxic rag shows you the contempt those running the club have for the Celtic support.

The content showed exactly how little they consider the supporters concerns are relevant.

Did not address the many issues but used the old look what happened to the rangers whataboutery tactic which is a hunnish trait.

I like most of the genuine Celtic supporters on this site but starting to understand why it has so little credibility amongst the wider Celtic support.

I do look forward to more of winning captains teasing posts.

  28. Peter Lawell 2012 – We don’t need Rangers and their demise would have no material effect on Celtic. We look after ourselves.

Peter Lawell 2014 – When Rangers went down we took £100 off the season tickets. So that is £4m for two years. The Rangers games, that is at least another £3m. The fact there is a perception among our supporters that there is no competition and you are going to win anyway, and you don’t go to the game, so it could be £10m. We could have lost £10m a year, quite easily, on the back of Rangers going down.

  29. Celtic are near collapse as a club. No wonder with the Shite from PL and Paul…same as anyone allowed in ‘the big hoose’ come out saying the laird is Ok actually. Quite simple we have had it. Helping corrupt football in Scotand.. Who else in the world would do that? Incredible. Sickened with every passing day.. Don’t give me pish about waiting till it is settled.. Crap! too late already the Huns never went away. official, rubber stamped stamped by Celtic as part of SFA. They will win the league next year. or if not definitely the year after. You will be amazed at the refs next year even for Scotland. Started already with McClean as ref for final.Parkhead will be down to 15,000 crowds. Lawwell’s job will be done and get a nice cozy job in SFA /UEFA.

  30. crowds went down because of crap players/teams. No heart. And no stopping SFA cheating. Not getting titles stripped. Attacks on our suppotters

  34. I’m in Stirling for the grandsons confirmation. Keeping up to scratch with Celtic news.

Moral courage is always harder than physical courage. PL looks to have neither, failing to stand up to the SFA or SPFL. Referees? Forget about it! MSM? Let’s give the Sun an interview. Has he forgotten the Liverpool treatment ? I think his remarks about the blogosphere are revealing.

I also think he is a condescending asshole. Anyone who makes the sort of remarks he does can’t be anything else.
