Very pleased Peter Lawwell has opened up a bit today (in The Sun, I know…) on the workings of the club, I hope this is the start of a trend in more regular communication. If there’s logical explanations for Celtic’s actions, inactions, views and general strategy, we should be giving them far more often than we have.
On the club’s financial strategy, his comments were not far removed from yesterday’s blog, “if we take the club into £20m worth of debt, and [Champions League qualification] doesn’t happen, where does that leave us?
“For a Scottish club to owe that kind of money leads to trouble. You don’t have to look very far [Govan] to see the consequences [administration and/or liquidation]of people trying things which ‘might’ happen.”
We’re only a few years from that touchstone but the point still needs to be made.
On one point, there’s probably a bit of work to do: “You’ve got social media and the bloggers, posters and trolls who think they know what’s going on at the club. They don’t.
“They don’t have all the information. The reality is different from their perception and I need to deal with reality every day.”
Social media will never have all the information, but football clubs need to find out ways to harness what is still a new and emerging phenomenon. At the very least, they need to find ways to head off wildly inaccurate and damaging fantasies.
Everyone believes they deal with reality, not perception. I laugh when I see new posters here saying “I’ve no axe to grind, but…….” None of us believe we have an axe to grind, we all believe we bring reality to the debate.
Self-awareness in this respect is not part of the human condition. If people experience, see and read certain realities, perceptions consistent with those realities are perceived as reality.
The only way around this for the club is to ensure Celtic fans have access to sufficient verifiable realities to offset perceived realities. Let’s keep the verifiable realities coming, soon if possible.
Really hope Leigh is playing tonight, and he gets his 40th goal. It would be a fitting achievement for a thorough professional – who never lets an opportunity to show Celtic fans how genuine his delight to be here is.
There’s a Football Forum at The Iron Horse pub, West Nile St, tomorrow [Thursday] from 18:30 until 21:00. Three authors will talk about football within Scottish society.
Our own Alex Gordon, author or Winds of Change, Caesar & the Assassin, A Bhoy called Bertie, Celtic the Awakening and more, “will provide stories of and insights into the integrity of the Scottish football press and media”. Alex is a former editor of the Sunday Mail, so this one should be interesting.
Sandy Jamieson, author of Celtic Submari: a new model for football relationships, among others, will also be speaking. The third panelist is Alan Ness, author of the football novel, A Man’s Game.
There’s a £5 (to Dogs Trust charity or discount off a book) charge at the door, no tickets in advance. Introduce yourself to Alex, if you’re there.

Belfast McDonald’s Employee Has Melt Down After Winning £362,259.

Another man who looks like he’s got an ole heated driveway
Where Paul is spot on is that Celtic really, really, really need to have a look at their communication strategy.
To show where what I call “silo” communication I could cite examples since last week where mixed messages started popping up at different points on social media like rockets fired from silos carrying different perspectives on the same subject.
Once its out the silo the warhead splits depending on who hears the message, how they interpret it and how they pass it on. Recovery is almost impossible and “send reinforcements we are going to advance” quickly becomes ” send three and four pence (auld money) we are going to a dance.
Once its out the silo its too late and if the next salvos not exactly the same message well its Twittermaggedon.
The thing is not all match-goers do use social media, so those that do not don’t get to know what is bothering those that do. However how long before the demographic changes? My grandkids 9 to 14 communicate via social media all the time. How long before 90% of match-goers do?
The most powerful thing in the universe is an idea. Put the right one out there and it creates life, but if a mad idea gets loose it cries havoc and lets slip the dogs of war.
If ever a communication strategy were need by Celtic it is now. (Is this not where I came in?)

Yeah but Celtic this year played more players than any other team in all top divisions in Europe. I think we played about 33 different players this season. Plus, we have one of the biggest squads in Europe. Squad players are fine, but this many? If you want my opinion, I’d rather not spend any money on players, play young players and reduce ticket prices. Hearts have the right model there. I can’t see why a low earning Celtic fan in the East End should fork out £25 to see squad players.
weeminger on 11th May 2016 4:18 pm
Yes, but they are also making noises about “the heart” and “history” of the club living in the hearts of the supporters.
It’s all obfuscation of the point – Rangers are dead. Nothing more needs to be added to that.
Damo..,
I see like yesterday you are trying and failing to frame the discussion to suit your agenda, Israel has as much right to exist as the ISIS caliphate currently being set up in Iraq and Syria, both use the exact same logic to make the claim and both use the exact same method to facilitate their targets.
Israel is not defending itself, Israel is expanding its illegal occupation by force.

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has quit the Scottish Professional Football League board in protest at the club’s three-point deduction for including ineligible players against Inverness.
United were already relegated from the Premiership when they listed unregistered pair Ali Coote and Jamie Robson in their squad for the 3-2 win over Caley Thistle on Friday, but Thompson has taken a stand against the league’s punishment.
A club statement read: “Chairman Stephen Thompson has resigned from his position on the SPFL board with immediate effect.
“He has expressed his shock and anger at the severity of the sanction imposed by the SPFL in relation to a rule breach in our recent Premiership fixture versus Inverness Caley Thistle.”
United were also fined £30,000, an unspecified part of which is suspended, following an SPFL disciplinary hearing. Coote, who came off the bench in the 76th minute, and unused substitute Robson should not have featured as they had returned from loan spells after the March 31 deadline to become re-registered with their parent club.
A United statement continued: “Whilst acknowledging the club’s error and accepting a breach of rules occurred, the chairman feels the gravity of the punishment is wholly disproportionate for what was a simple honest, human error.
“We await the full written judgment after which we will consider our next action.
“Our travelling fans are the ones who have been punished the most here and the club will examine ways to make this up to them.”
Thompson is one of three Premiership representatives on the SPFL board.
Coote had just returned from a loan spell at East Fife while Robson had played for Brechin the previous weekend, and teams are unable to register players from April 1 onwards.
An SPFL statement read: “Dundee United pled guilty to breaches of SPFL Player Regulations 12, 14(i) and 14(ii), which breached SPFL Rules. The breaches of Player Regulations occurred because the club failed to apply to the SPFL to league register the players as required by SPFL Player Regulations 7 and 3A.
“As a result, Dundee United were severely censured, deducted three points from their points total this season and fined £30,000 (part suspended).
“The disciplinary hearing concluded that replaying the game before the end of the season was not practical.”

Okay, unless you are a supporter of Hamas’ fellow jihadis in ISIS, you are saying Israel has no right to exist.
But Israel does in fact exist, so what do you want to see done about it?
Cultsbhoy,
my post was to The Green Man alone and not any other posters,
having read his posts today and opinion on Paul67,
I have no idea as to why he would want to post here,
I have no issues whatsoever with people criticising the way the blog has headed recently,
it is as you say not the blog of a few years back,
I have contributed regularly for a number of years to the blog though infrequently of late,
but if I had the opinion of The Green Man I would be nowhere near it
Damo Lennon
That is missing the point. You said initially does Israel have a right to exist. Is that what we are talking about? My Tyson Fury analogy was not flawed. Israel is a nuclear power who is the largest recipient of American military aid. Hamas, have no navy or air force and are based in Gaza which has no means of importing significant amounts of weapons. In what way is it an existential threat? What do you want to gain from this discussion?

Lazarus is Jewish. Same roots…This is how Dudu Dahan became Liberace agent now. Be careful now.
to clear the ole bhlog for the next few days, live updates on the St Johnstone game will be found on GoldaMeirQuickNews.
As my Spanish tutor has deemed that this week’s class can happen at ‘a place of your choosing and should cover language associated with your own interests’ I’ve spent the last half hour trying to say ‘Lawwell, Laweell get tae feck’ in Spanish! :-)
Golda Meir was gay too.

Have you ever been in Israel??
Muscat_Bhoy1264 on 11th May 2016 4:31 pm
“We’ve” been talking about a lot of things yesterday and today, including Israel’s right to exist.
I’m sorry, you’re Fury analogy is wrong wrong wrong.
People are being killed by Hamas. Nothing excuses that. Not Hamas’ relative weakness, not Israel’s US military support. Those people killed are not analogous to Tyson Fury having a tissue thrown at him by an old woman. They are real people with real families who loved and mourned them. It’s shocking to dismiss them as unimportant.
What I want to gain from this discussion is some balance over the issue. There are rights and wrongs on both sides, not this, “Palestinians good/Israel bad,” skit that is going on.
Mr Z
Sooooo Liberace is really Duda Duhan?!
My head hurts :-)

Fair play…
I think we are all agreed Paul67 should consider carefully and communicate where he sees the Blog going. Being clear of any change in purpose.
I lament the change from an objective forum for Celtic views to its current PL PR- as I have great respect for the old CQN purpose and values.

The tone of several comments directed at our host is nothing short of scandalous.
By all means engage in constructive criticism. If you think reading the blog is such a chore, why bother? But, really, some people want to have a good look at themselves.

I’m not arguing that we have too large a squad but you said why sign players and not play them. I’m saying that if you’ve got LG and you only play one up front then you might sign a back up that doesn’t get played. It’s still a legitimate and required signing.

Great name by the way! I know what you’re saying there. But we do have a good developement squad and youngsters coming through. We could give them a chance rather than bringing in other players from outside. The external players we bring should definitely be good quality. I reckon our strategy should be quality over quantity. PL bashing is not something I like, but it’s hard to defend his strategy.
I know it’s controversial, but I reckon we could have got Robbie Keane at Celtic a few years ago instead of signing about 5 players for upwards of 15 million.
It appears now that there is something nefarious about Israel wishing to advance its point of view via social media, and that anyone making any semblance of defending Israel must be in their pay.
Them Jews, eh? They’re crafty!

The Khazars and the Semitic peoples are two entirely different ethnic groups.
I’m not sure if they are of the same religion, or not.
If debating/discussing Palestine, Israel, Jews, Zionism though, I believe it is vital to make the distinction.
