Peter Lawwell on strategy and reality

392

12579625.json

Very pleased Peter Lawwell has opened up a bit today (in The Sun, I know…) on the workings of the club, I hope this is the start of a trend in more regular communication.  If there’s logical explanations for Celtic’s actions, inactions, views and general strategy, we should be giving them far more often than we have.

On the club’s financial strategy, his comments were not far removed from yesterday’s blog, “if we take the club into £20m worth of debt, and [Champions League qualification] doesn’t happen, where does that leave us?

“For a Scottish club to owe that kind of money leads to trouble. You don’t have to look very far [Govan] to see the consequences [administration and/or liquidation]of people trying things which ‘might’ happen.”

We’re only a few years from that touchstone but the point still needs to be made.

On one point, there’s probably a bit of work to do: “You’ve got social media and the bloggers, posters and trolls who think they know what’s going on at the club. They don’t.

“They don’t have all the information. The reality is different from their perception and I need to deal with reality every day.”

Social media will never have all the information, but football clubs need to find out ways to harness what is still a new and emerging phenomenon.  At the very least, they need to find ways to head off wildly inaccurate and damaging fantasies.

Everyone believes they deal with reality, not perception.  I laugh when I see new posters here saying “I’ve no axe to grind, but…….”  None of us believe we have an axe to grind, we all believe we bring reality to the debate.

Self-awareness in this respect is not part of the human condition.  If people experience, see and read certain realities, perceptions consistent with those realities are perceived as reality.

The only way around this for the club is to ensure Celtic fans have access to sufficient verifiable realities to offset perceived realities.  Let’s keep the verifiable realities coming, soon if possible.

Really hope Leigh is playing tonight, and he gets his 40th goal.  It would be a fitting achievement for a thorough professional – who never lets an opportunity to show Celtic fans how genuine his delight to be here is.

There’s a Football Forum at The Iron Horse pub, West Nile St, tomorrow [Thursday] from 18:30 until 21:00.  Three authors will talk about football within Scottish society.

Our own Alex Gordon, author or Winds of Change, Caesar & the Assassin, A Bhoy called Bertie, Celtic the Awakening and more, “will provide stories of and insights into the integrity of the Scottish football press and media”.  Alex is a former editor of the Sunday Mail, so this one should be interesting.

Sandy Jamieson, author of Celtic Submari: a new model for football relationships, among others, will also be speaking.  The third panelist is Alan Ness, author of the football novel, A Man’s Game.

There’s a £5 (to Dogs Trust charity or discount off a book) charge at the door, no tickets in advance.  Introduce yourself to Alex, if you’re there.

I don’t actually think it’s the fees that are the stumbling block, but the salary that a player of eg £10M level is told they can command.

True, but look at Man Utd this season. They had a lot of injuries but allowed players like Mensah and Rashford into the team. I reckon we’ve got some good young players coming through.

  4. This is a must read absolutely outstanding from bellacaledonia.

“While the media discusses whether Sportscene should have more than one camera and increase its budget from buttons to pennies, a major report on corruption in Scottish sport is ignored.

Here is a strange state of affairs. The excellent website Inside World Football recently ran an article headed “Rangers tax case draws call for independent inquiry into Scottish football.” The intro was damning of our game’s authorities: “Glasgow Rangers escaped being stripped of historic league titles by the Scottish Football Association on false pretences, a report by the Tax Justice Network has alleged.” You can read the article here.

Or you could read about it on the blogs operated by (Rangers supporter) John James or (Celtic-minded) Phil Mac Giolla Bhain or The Clumpany. You could even go the extra yard and read the entire 32-page report by George Turner and Alex Cobham here.

Where you WON’T be able to read about it is in Scottish newspapers, nor will you be enlightened by our broadcasters. Indeed, BBC listeners were blocked from raising it on a phone-in programmed this week. Radio silence prevailed. As the BBC’s Kenny Macintyre explained in a series of tweets: “We are aware of the report & the interest in the subject. It’s a very complicated story …There are legalities around it …At this stage, we are not convinced there’s enough in it to be worthy of discussion on our programme.”

Really? SFA President Campbell Ogilvie, formerly of Rangers, failed to tell the truth to a judge-led inquiry set up by the SFA, leading them to a “material error of fact in their judgement.” And that’s not worthy of discussion on a football phone-in?

An independent report concludes that the SFA are “not fit for fair play” but it’s all a bit too complicated. Or this: “That the SFA appear to have been negligent in dealing with Rangers’ licence to play in Europe in the 2011 season is one thing. However, there appears to be evidence that the SFA colluded with the club to cover up their failings after news of the dispute between Rangers and HMRC became public.” Move along, nothing to see here! And by the way, the dispute “became public” not thanks to our newspaper journalists or broadcasters, but courtesy of a freelance beavering away in County Donegal.

“It is difficult to imagine any regulator, in any other sector, running press statements past the people they were regulating for approval. It is even more difficult to understand how a regulator can be seen to be impartial if it drops public statements it was planning to make about a company they regulate on the request of the company and arranges a private dinner between the chief executives in the following weeks.”

Here’s another lulu. “The close relationship between the SFA and the club is also a concern. It is difficult to imagine any regulator, in any other sector, running press statements past the people they were regulating for approval. It is eve”

  8. Well, last night some posting was to say the least was a conundrum. Posters debating Israel, Palestine et Al. Never thought to see that on a Celtic blog. Ah well.

Re: our esteemed Mr Lawell, finance yes, CEI, ah dunno, he did state perspectives and realities. That is fine but as many posters state, disengagement from the fans, not a good thing.

We need a strong manager, and coach to get the best out of what will be left of the squad after clear out. Incoming an imposing, tenacious midfielder, a prominent goalscorer.

It’s good that our CEO wants to engage with supporters. The content wasn’t much to write home about and i thought a little condescending. His choice of outlet was extremely ill judged, the timing is shocking. I think he took an oppertunity to stick two fingers up at the Record, and maybe even some fans. I suspect a bit of ego is involved. We’ve seen before that Peter Lawwell likes to rub people’s noses in it. I’ve made my feelings clear to Celtic, I hope others do likewise.

  10. *One of my boyhood favourites tae macjay, I equate him with the likes of Johnny Divers, Jim Kennedy and Mike Jackson, good players in a poorly managed Celtic side.

When we signed him it was a coup for the club as he had been voted the Junior Player of the Year and was a Scottish Junior Cup winner. He was also a prolific scorer at junior level with 78 goals in a single season for Irvine Meadow.

One memory I have of him outwith his goal scoring feats was at a game at broomfield I believe a punter in the crowd threw a black pudding at him, it missed fortunately and when he went tae look at it a voice fae the crowd allegedly said that makes 12 of you on the park.

When I first heard that Lawwell had given a interview to The Sun I thought to myself, that’s a blunder.

On reflection it’s not. He’s opening up at least and explaining Celtic’s position and reasoning for decisions taken whilst reaching a mass audience. Whether Celtic supporting non Sun readers like it or not, and I’m one of them, we need to have a relationship of sorts with the most popular tabloid. Simply put, it’s just good business practice.

    Ellbhoy,

My objection is that zionists declare that Palestine is their homeland and has always been their homeland even though the Jews originated from Egypt.

That they wrote a book that claimed they were granted that homeland by their god is probably the worst and biggest lie in history.

Using that logic anyone can write a book that states god told me this is my house you better move or I will kill you in the name of my god, which is pretty much what ISIS are doing, I really don’t see any difference between the two.

Even now Palestinians are being forcibly removed from their homes using the exact same strategy, is that acceptable ?

Like Thatcher, Pedro’s clearly not for turning. More of the same it is.

Lots of arguments both ways here on whether he’s good or bad, but the only judgement that matters is whether the supporters are willing to fork out to support this strategy or not.

I fear that next season Sevco will have 45,000 season book holders to our 30,000.

Pedro can throw however many red herrings he likes into his Murdoch rag interview, whether it’s how coveted he is elsewhere, how misunderstood he is or how admired Celtic are as a well run club, but I fear his ‘customer base’ has stopped listening and will vote with their feet.

This is bad news whether you agree with Pedro or not.

  20. I had the misfortune to sit across from Stewart Regan at Edinburgh Airport this morning. He sounds just like Paul O’Grady. He was joined by a man from Stenhousemuir FC and one from Spartans. I’m amazed anyone from Spartans, a great club, would bother with SR given how badly they were treated compared to you know who.

I was tempted to challenge Regan but, as I know people who work with him and they say he’s an arrogant man, I didn’t.

He was off to Mexico. FIFA Conference, don’t you know!

Great to see that the Scottish football authorities are looking after the well being of our beloved game and making sure that rules are applied strictly and swiftly without fear or favour:

Relegated Dundee United have been deducted three points and fined £30,000 for using two ineligible players in their win over Inverness Caley Thistle.

Ali Coote, a 17-year-old midfielder, came on as a substitute, while Jamie Robson, 18, was an unused substitute.

Meanwhile a decade of blatant cheating is airbrushed from history.

The only time in the past when I have come close to criticising Peter Lawwell and the Baord was when it looked as though they could not see the failings in Ronny’s approach and we might have to put up with another season. Clearly, they did see that and as we know a change of management is in the air. Therefore I have always been, and remain, a fan of Peter Lawwell and how he operates as CEO.

That said I think today’s article, and more to the point the vehicle of choice, is a serious misjudgement of the mood of the support. As a fan of PL you would expect me to be surprised about that, and I am. It makes me wonder what’s really going on.

Having had some experience of dealing with the media, I do know that an interview of this scale is a long time in the planning. These types of arrangements don’t happen off the cuff. I am also fascinated, given the time that will have gone into it, just how banal the content is. It does make me wonder, and believe me I have no inside information, is PL in the process of exiting the club.

To say so much, but really say so little takes thought, and no little skill. I wonder if he is being deliberately vague on the knowledge that there are significant strategic and personnel changes at Executive level in the wind.

As I said I have no inside info, just my own perception of what might really be happening. Probably bollox, but we’ll see….

    =============================

I’ve been wondering if that might be the case too. Perhaps my invite last week for him to join me down in the Costa on early retirement (best thing I ever did) with a glass of sangria or two had a greater effect than I imagined.

The guys at Spartans don’t feel ill-treated from 2012. They didn’t consider it likely that there would be a place available. Quote from the time “TBB, doesn’t matter how good we are at preparing bid documents, we can’t compete with Rangers. Forget about it.”

Their beef is from a couple of years earlier, where they were knocked back on the basis that Ainsley Park wasn’t going to be completed in time for the start of the season. Despite Meadowbank, Tynecastle, Easter Road, Almondvale and umpteen other grounds nearby being available short-term.

Fact is, Spartans is used as a feeder club by the senior clubs in the East – like Stenny, Berwick, Cowdenbeath etc etc. If Spartans got into the senior set up, the flow of players would be reversed. It was those clubs who rejected Spartans’ application in favour of Annan. Annan of course, wouldn’t compete with the senior clubs for local talent.
