Peter, you will never walk alone

311

Over the years I have lost count of the number of times I asked Peter Lawwell to speak up and defend himself from ill-informed nutcases who thought him too exertive or not exertive enough.  He continually refused, “What is best for Celtic?” was his repeated response.  The real world is not as conspiratorial as many seem to think.

The man’s sheer intellect towered over Scottish football for 17 years.  If you wanted to influence a neutral against Peter’s position, you needed your A game.  Most went home to lick their wounds, many of them resentful.  If you cannot outsmart him, blame his hidden hand, seems to be the excuse of choice.

The perpetrator of the fireball attack on his home in the early hours of the night will likely be caught; these types are seldom criminal masterminds.  Although we know nothing about who did it, we can be sure it was a male, that he lives in an ocean of inadequacy, and that he was radicalised by those who this morning believe themselves to have clean hands.  For the record, they do not.  The script on the lone lunatic has not changed in 100 years, to a man, radicalised.

It is a huge mercy that no one was physically harmed.  A decade on from similar attacks on Neil Lennon and his lawyer, the late Paul McBride, this could very easily have resulted in a loss of life.  Peter, you will never walk alone.

  1. As someone who has frequently spoken to Peter in a one to one situation at Celtic Park, I agree with what you have posted Paul 67. He is and always will be a Celtic mhan through and through. All our thoughts and prayers should be with him and his family today.

  2. An alternative view of course is that last night’s events serve to show the futility and wrongheadedness of the Board’s approach.

  3. Ernie – anyone holding that view should say that they hold it and not just say that the view exists

What happened in the early hours at Lawwell’s residence is horrendous.

The scum who done this are hopefully found and jailed.

However the following from yourself is a cringe worthy.

Express your feeling on the events of what happened, but the ‘we’re not worthy’ comments, especially after what he done to the requisitioners, are nonsensical.

‘The man’s sheer intellect towered over Scottish football for 17 years. If you wanted to influence a neutral against Peter’s position, you needed your A game. 5. I’ll make a weary prediction.

If a Celtic fan is responsible ( I don’t think so) we’ll read ‘Celtic fan Mr X charged with arson’ etc in every paper.

If it’s a fan of a club making headlines for all the wrong reasons this week, the alleged perpetrator will be referred to only by his name without reference to the club he supports.

Societal problems in Scotland are ignored and or exacerbated by a media unwillingness to be open and honest.

  6. Oh dear Paul. No reason to come out and try and support his failure at Celtic and your nice lamb

Would give Boris Johnston thoughts to his family if it happened at his home

I agree with the sentiment behind your comment but it is possible to offer a viewpoint without actually holding that opinion.

Time to move on from this wreteched league and its members. Rebuilding anyway so lets do it for another league

  11. Ive done business with Peter, the smartest business man I have ever met, and i know a few . I realised that a unique perspective but have always thought we were fortunate to have such a talent at the helm of the club. You dont know what you’ve got until you loose it

Lets hope the vermin that staged this attack are caught ASAP

5 way agreement, same club narrative going unchallenged, TGD’s public comments about how wonderful the huns were, the stringing along and then unceremonious ditching of Res 12, all indicate a certain planned approach to matters.

The entirely foreseeable result and consequence of that planned approach has been footballing capitulation and humiliation on the one hand and triumphalist thuggery on the other.

It didn’t have to be this way.

  13. Thoughts with Peter Lawwell and his family – God knows how they will be feeling.

It is like something one would normally associate with Northern Ireland. It is a sinister development.

Probably unlikely that the perpetrator(s) will be caught and brought to justice – they seldom are in cowardly acts such as this.

Of course one must ask who would do such a thing. Who are they? Whom do they represent? What was their motivation? Is it as straightforward as most of us may think?

The west of Scotland is a very ugly place at this moment in time.

The depths to which some people will sink is really quite incredible, I have a very different opinion on Peter than P67 but you have to be a very sad and dangerous individual to conduct an act like this.

Nothing more to add except a jail sentence beckons.

Just when I was encouraged by Humza Yousaf’s strong comments about the second 2021 Glasgow riot, he has been replaced as Justice Minister by Keith Brown.

Mr Brown now has to follow on with the investigation and repercussions of the weekend and now the arson attack on Peter Lawwell’s family and property.

Mr Brown voted in favour of the Scottish Parliament motion (SSN-24095) that there should be an inquiry into the conduct of the Police and Crown Office with regard to the malicious prosecution of people associated with the administration of Rangers.

I hope this is an indication that he does wish to lead Scotland to a justice service which is fit for purpose and let this be a cross-party movement to avoid party political interests blocking progress.

Just back from a lovely bike ride over the Fenwick Moor, did I pass any of the CQN cycling clique? :-)

  23. Well said Paul

An absolutely horrendous thing for him and his family to go through. Just the worst, and extremely upsetting to see such a dangerous and meaningless attack happen to anyone.

The Celtic family is United behind him today.

  24. Someone quite rightly mentions Eddie Howe. I must say that looking on from down south, Crystal Palace would now be infinitely more attractive to an ambitious manager with a young family, than Celtic Park.

  25. It is a disgrace that Celtic supporters can give excuses for this vile attack. The Celtic CEO has had his house firebomber and almost raised to the ground. Thankful his family are unharmed.

This happened because he is the Celtic CEO.

Some of the ill informed and lies by internet bampots could be behind this attack. I don’t believe other incidents are connected. This most certainly comes from the same type of people who sent Bombs and bullets to Neil Lennon.

Peter should be given our unconditional support

  26. It’s possible to believe that Peter Lawwell is a very smart and accomplished guy and also that he got the decision not to challenge the corruption of Scottish football, that benefited Ibrox, very wrong.

It is also possible to view the attack on him and his family as abhorrent and disgraceful and also believe that this policy of the Celtic Board allowed a bitter victim mentality to be further enraged among the most bigoted Rangers supporters.

Further, it is also possible to believe that pursuing proper application of the rules would have provoked a violent reaction from them in any case.

The question then is whether Celtic PLC should have shown leadership anyway. What isn’t acceptable is that none of this is openly debated, except on certain social media, but left to fester with resentment on all sides, but then Celtic PLC is not a democracy.

Of course no one deserves his house firebombed and I hope the idiot is caught and punished.

First and foremost glad that Peter Lawwell, and the family who were present, were unharmed, though obviously not unaffected. A despicable act by any standards, and one not easily forgiven or forgotten. Hope for all concerned those responsible are soon looking forward to a lengthy spell behind bars. And despite being critical on occasion I do hope our CEO does continue to represent Celtic FC, not back at the SFA, a thankless and in some ways a hopeless task for any Celtic man, but in Europe at the ECA or at UEFA or both. I have no doubt that, at times like these, all bona fide Celtic supporters will stand alongside Pete now and beyond. Best wishes to all.
