Peterhead 0-3 Celtic

671

The game was only 42 seconds old when Peterhead’s David Ross was sent clean through on Lukasz Zaluska after some excellent approach play but the Celtic keeper was alert enough to collect the ball and prevent the home team’s only chance of the game.  Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick and had a further two goals disallowed for offside as Celtic progressed into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Stokes looked most likely to score from the off.  Samaras fed the Irishman on 14 minutes but his shot was blocked.  Ki then played a forward pass inside the Peterhead right back to the overlapping Cha.  Cha’s cutback found Stokes, who leaned back in the act of shooting and fired over.  Just before the half hour mark Charlie Mulgrew passed a corner on the deck to Ki, who took a touch and shot against the crossbar from the edge of the D.  Keeper Jarvie then saved well from a Mulgrew free kick.

Celtic opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a classic Centenary goal when Paddy McCourt swivelled in the centre of the field before playing a forward ball for Samaras to run onto.  The Greek striker reached the ball inside the 18-yard-box and squared with his first touch to Stokes who knocked the ball into an empty net.

Shortly before half time Samaras carried the ball 80 yards before crossing for Stokes who finished well inside the 6-yard-box but he was flagged for offside.

Stokes second came on 57 minutes when Emilio Izaguirre dribbled into the box before playing a smart 1-2-3 with Stokes, who found what looked like an impossible space inside Jarvie’s right hand post.

Stokes was now on fire and could have added a third a moment later when he controlled a Mulgrew corner inside the ball but pulled his shot wide from 6 yards.  The striker completed his hat trick on 82 minutes a few seconds after substitute Dylan McGeough entered the field and dribbled into the box.  The ball was cleared to Wanyama to pushed it right to Brown who then sent it onto Stokes who made no mistake.

  1. The Hootsmon disnae have a clue on fitba reporting. They have jist jined the rest of the rags that willl go out of existence in the face of on-line competion. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned.

  2. Gerry, the blatt may go fut…..the problem for us and our Club is that the attitudes that write in such a partial manner will live on…

    Sadly.

  3. CultsBhoy loves being 1st on

Stokes was MOM today – no question – other decent performers, included MulGrew, Brown , Sammi, McCourt but in a 3 -0, sure the hattrick king gets it?

    On another issue..

If I were an agent – I’d sign up Neil Warnock and In Hollyway to form a pundit double act – they would be kings of TV football.

Better than ex payers like Souness et al who spend their time trying to be sauve – give me Warnock and Holloway every time –

  5. not impressed by that clip of the trialist to be honest

on liverpools interest in mathews for 4 million, your having a laugh

6 million for ki, aye alright get offered 8 million from russian club but sell to pool for 2 million less again your having a laugh

sell and spent all on other players, no chance i’ll be annoyed if we’re selling players to bring in cheaper option when our current wage limit is in budget. we can get a good cb and cf in, with a view to all our out of contract players being free transfers leaving in the summer.

any future sale of our young talented players should be

    for market value

when we are ready to sell

50% of return should be used to reinvest in next group of young talented players

50% of return should be spent on celtic park i.e. triangle with a view to increasing regular income

the current model of buying players seems to be working well, but if we just start to sell players to balance books, without addressing other areas/ revenue stream we will forever sell without hope of seeing at least one or two class players being retained over the longer period, or to help the younger bhoys learn the game and win.

know its more popular to want every penny spent but there is a better way to assure we move forward as a club and regain some of the credibility we have lost over the last few years

Whilst it took us a while to get into our stride, result was never in doubt against a shower of hammer throwing thugs who were given carte blanche to boot rings round them.Fantastic pass by Paddy to put Samaras in to open the door for the opening goal.

Well done to Stokes for a great hat-trick.

Oh and McInally shame on you for your pre-match comments.

  7. Due to circmumstances, I have only seen wee bits of the game, mostly the first half. It looked to me as if the opposition were going over the top in their tackling a la thon sou side bakrupts and the ICTs and motherwells of this world. I trust we have had no serious injuries.

  8. Tricoloured Ribbon on

Despite a comfortable victory,we had only one proven scorer out of 16 players today.

That is a massive concern for me.

  9. West Wales Celt on

    Just struck me.

There’s a transfer window open and no sign of WGS.

Where’d he get to these days?

  10. I would ask those fans who sit next to jim mcinally in the south stand to ask him where in Celtic are you taught to kick..

I for one will if I ever get a chance to speak to him…

  11. jmccormick

yes …apart from his first league against Hibs i think he has been poor

looks quite soft and almost timid

pissing on chips moment here, but , did anyone else think that Kelvin Wilson looked sh*te today , even allowing for injury break?

    ………………………………………………………………………………….

I’m not sure I would share your description of Kelvin but he hasn’t filled me with confidence so far but remember it’s his first season. He’s at a big club and has come up from a different environment. He also has had a lengthy period out injured and didn’t play for a long time before he came to us. We need to give him time.

  15. Heard there wiza a guy playin for Peterheid,..that had a brother that knew somebody that wiz a pal of the faither of the boy that wiz the mascot on the very day Celtic conceded first against Hamilton Accies in a 1987 pre–season friendly….

Agreed mate – is is better to get humped trying to play the right way(i.e.) the way Mcinally was brought up or get humped kicking everything that moves?

Agree…mostly; however, he looked a bit like Ferdinand (today)….shaky. As you say, let’s give him some time to bed in, but he will need a heavyweight partner to help him out. He, like Rio, does not have enough physical presence.

    Blantyre Tim,

That shower of scum should have been lucky to end wae even 9 men today.Full blooded elbow into Ledleys face, some other non entity could easily have ended Mulgrews season and the smirks on McInallys face angered me throughout the game.

Sorry but thats no Celtic man for me and by God do I love full blooded challenges.Today was thuggery.

  19. Eyes Wide Open on

    Evening folks.

A potential banana skin avoided because the endeavour and application was spot on from each and every player today.

It was a big call putting Izaguirre in today – one thing is for sure, if Emilio harboured any mental scars from his horrific injury coming through as physical a game as we will play this season, unscathed will have surely healed them.

I can not put into words how good it makes me feel seeing him back in a Celtic jersey. A wonderful, wonderful footballer.

Games like today are games we need Scott Brown – for all the critics of the man, if Ki didnt have him standing next to him, I reckon he would have wilted.

K Wilson is someone I am not convinced by.

Cha found his level of football today thats for sure!!

    Stokes – great tenacity

Samaras – quetly effective, didnt bottle out of things as much as he would ordinarily.

Zaluska is a sweeper and a goalkeeper

Mulgrew did well, possibly looks for the long ball too often.

Ledley was having a good game before coming off

McCourt – I am please for him today. He played for 90 minutes – and wasnt red faced at the end of it, removing that argument amongst his critics. He tracked back and defended well (ok there were a few times he was pretending to more so than actually intending to), he didnt try and over do it every time, played it simple but showed what else he has in his locker when the run was on. There absolutely has to be more games we can use him!

    Well done today bhoys

With the greatest of respect lads we have two strikers who can score goals.Hooper and Stokes.

We need another.I was on about this last night. What happens if one or both get injured or suspended. We cant cut it fine.

A poster last night suggested Jon Daly.I reckon thats a superb call.

  21. Paddy McCourt is a good player …is he better than those who are keeping him out …i don`t think so

imo that is why is doesn`t start

why the Sammy bashing …the guy has been one of our top performers for the last two months …any chance of unqualified credit when it`s due

McInally told everyone his tactics on Friday. The referee would have known that they were going to kick us/elbow us off the park. Why, with the prior knowledge that he had, did he not give our players protection ?

Could it be that our squad is viewed as being too strong compared to Rankers and that Kayal, Forrest and Ledley being assaulted with impunity might even things up.

  23. reilly

the ref was the worst of them all today

a firm hand would have dampened Peterheads enthusiasim

instead he allowed them free rein ….lucky we didn`t take a sore one

The vision and skill of Paddy McCourt and Dylan McGeouch are a joy to behold.Pity they were subjected to boot merchants..

  25. I see I am not alone with my reservations about Kelvin, the Ipox horror show still worries me, looks very casual and a liitle bit weak. AnYway the brilliant Barca have me mesmerised again , so off I sign.
