Peterhead 0-3 Celtic

671

The game was only 42 seconds old when Peterhead’s David Ross was sent clean through on Lukasz Zaluska after some excellent approach play but the Celtic keeper was alert enough to collect the ball and prevent the home team’s only chance of the game.  Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick and had a further two goals disallowed for offside as Celtic progressed into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Stokes looked most likely to score from the off.  Samaras fed the Irishman on 14 minutes but his shot was blocked.  Ki then played a forward pass inside the Peterhead right back to the overlapping Cha.  Cha’s cutback found Stokes, who leaned back in the act of shooting and fired over.  Just before the half hour mark Charlie Mulgrew passed a corner on the deck to Ki, who took a touch and shot against the crossbar from the edge of the D.  Keeper Jarvie then saved well from a Mulgrew free kick.

Celtic opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a classic Centenary goal when Paddy McCourt swivelled in the centre of the field before playing a forward ball for Samaras to run onto.  The Greek striker reached the ball inside the 18-yard-box and squared with his first touch to Stokes who knocked the ball into an empty net.

Shortly before half time Samaras carried the ball 80 yards before crossing for Stokes who finished well inside the 6-yard-box but he was flagged for offside.

Stokes second came on 57 minutes when Emilio Izaguirre dribbled into the box before playing a smart 1-2-3 with Stokes, who found what looked like an impossible space inside Jarvie’s right hand post.

Stokes was now on fire and could have added a third a moment later when he controlled a Mulgrew corner inside the ball but pulled his shot wide from 6 yards.  The striker completed his hat trick on 82 minutes a few seconds after substitute Dylan McGeough entered the field and dribbled into the box.  The ball was cleared to Wanyama to pushed it right to Brown who then sent it onto Stokes who made no mistake.

Anybody do me a wee semi-quaver n put up a link to the goal against the huns?

McInally may have done wrong – although I hardly think he had a lot of options – could they have outplayed us…nonethe less he was wrong…but he is not a Hun…

Thought Samaras had a decent game today.Held the ball well and did a lot of spadework for Stokes.

    No complaints from me.

  5. the long wait is over on

I thought the ref was almost completely to blame today.

I dont recall that Peterhead started off tough today but as the game went on and they realised they were not going to be properly penalised by the ref it got worse and worse.

The elbow on Ledley was a straight red.

The knowledge that you can foul with impunity imbues every Rangers performance against us.

It’s why Elbows can get away with charging about like a wounded rhino.

As it happens I thought his challenge on Beram wasnt a yellow for one reason only – he got lucky. The challenge turned out to be a legitimate one but 99% of the time he’d have ended up going over the ball and really catching Beram.

Funnily enough therre was exactly the same challenge by an Arbroath player on a Rangers player early on in their game which was immediately whistled as a foul even though it wasnt.

Referees in games involving us are disgracefully weak in protecting our players ( David Healy ffs…).

If the opposition dont know that before the game kicks off they soon realise it. After that its open season.

  6. Tricoloured Ribbon,

I agree we’re light on goalscoring strikers, it just needs Hoops or Stokes to pick up an injury and we have one striker who is reliable, it’s an own goal if we don’t sign a striker, how many times have we been in this position, the Huns are on 4iar and are being assisted by the thugs from other Scottish teams…… Not again ffs.

Like most Celtic fans at the time, ans I include yourself in this,I nevr grudged Provan his wages at the time, nor his testimonial. Indeed,I just wanted him back, fit and well, and doing what he did best.

His current diadain for all things Celtic,so prevalent in the Scottish media,is perplexing to say the least, but he was a superb player for us.

  8. So mcInally should have done as mccall does today against his loved ones ?

utter rubbish……he did as he should and set his team up to do as best they could against a superior team……end of story !

He was treated badly by our club as a youth with loads of potential yet remains a true supporter unlike clowns such as mcleod (today was a low point of shortbread from this thicko ) or provan or nicholas who only ahcieved against an appallingly low level rangers and only saw europe beyond xmas once by beating the giants of Dundalk 3-2 to get there…….

If McCulloch wasn’t injured, why did he go to ground waving both his arms?

That’s one of his better DVD’s. He sings “The Roll Of Honour” as an encore. :-)

    I feel your pain..

  12. provan and mcleod were key players in beating an appallingly poor and desperately badly managed rangers in 79 and then hugely underachieved at home or abroad despite our main rivals playing to sub 10,000 most weeks….

the capitualtion to Aberdeen in 80 and to dundee utd a few years later was worse than black sunday other than it was the rangers who benefited on that ocassion.

every decent euro team except a young Ajax gubbed us, and even then we lost in the next round to sociedad those euro giants !!!

If there’s a better defence splitting pass in the whole of Britain all weekend than Paddy McCourts to put Samaras in to square it for Stokes to score then I have yet to see it.Sensational.

I thought Paddy’s pass was good…against Peterhead. There’s a reason why good teams playing other good teams tend to play the ball on the deck…

‘Why the big love in by some posters earlier today about McInally??’

McInally is more of a Celtic fan than most of the people who post on here.

Some of the nonsense posted about him today has been utterly ridiculous.

He said “I asked my players to leave the foot in”. i.e. attempt to hurt and injure. Disgusting comment.

  23. Your dead right boss,thugs..hope he gets sacked..I have no time for badge kissers or hangers-on who put the boot into Celtic for a few bob..

  24. There were a few meaty challenges going around but you expect that when you come away from home in the cup.

  25. The Singing Detective on

Neil Lennon was talking about McInally earlier in the week, recalling his time coaching the youngsters at Parkhead.

He suggested that he might be brought back in a coaching role some time in the future.

I hope that idea is now right off the agenda ,and I hope he gets some suitably appreciative remarks from his section in the stand next time he tries to use his season ticket…Another Uncle Timmie on the make..

Always a poseur…remember him with the perma-tan and ludicrous bleached blonde hair ?

He probably gets an easy time on here from some posters because he is a courgette-carrying member of Ernie’s Marxist Revolutionary Secret Army…

  26. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    Ernie Lynch,

If Joe Ledley has a broken jaw or Mulgrew had sustained a broken ankle or ligament damage then McInally is still a good Tim?

He made an outrageous statement prior to the game akin to something from the likes of Butcher or McCall.

  27. brucecassavetes- In a week when Guidi made complete fool of himself on national radio, was turned upside down and shaken by a humble phone-in caller, was named & ridiculed in a number of major football blogs and his main employer were “tapping the shoulder” of many of his colleagues, he would do himself a big favour by lying low for a few weeks.

  28. Burnley78

As far as I can remember Jim McInally was out for some time – a loan or an injury.

When he came back the manager – David Hay, I think – told him he was fourth choice for his mid-field position.

That was Peter Grant’s position. Peter is a big supporter but McInally was the better player so was Jim Duffy.
