Peterhead 0-3 Celtic

671

The game was only 42 seconds old when Peterhead’s David Ross was sent clean through on Lukasz Zaluska after some excellent approach play but the Celtic keeper was alert enough to collect the ball and prevent the home team’s only chance of the game.  Anthony Stokes scored a hat trick and had a further two goals disallowed for offside as Celtic progressed into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Stokes looked most likely to score from the off.  Samaras fed the Irishman on 14 minutes but his shot was blocked.  Ki then played a forward pass inside the Peterhead right back to the overlapping Cha.  Cha’s cutback found Stokes, who leaned back in the act of shooting and fired over.  Just before the half hour mark Charlie Mulgrew passed a corner on the deck to Ki, who took a touch and shot against the crossbar from the edge of the D.  Keeper Jarvie then saved well from a Mulgrew free kick.

Celtic opened the scoring on 35 minutes with a classic Centenary goal when Paddy McCourt swivelled in the centre of the field before playing a forward ball for Samaras to run onto.  The Greek striker reached the ball inside the 18-yard-box and squared with his first touch to Stokes who knocked the ball into an empty net.

Shortly before half time Samaras carried the ball 80 yards before crossing for Stokes who finished well inside the 6-yard-box but he was flagged for offside.

Stokes second came on 57 minutes when Emilio Izaguirre dribbled into the box before playing a smart 1-2-3 with Stokes, who found what looked like an impossible space inside Jarvie’s right hand post.

Stokes was now on fire and could have added a third a moment later when he controlled a Mulgrew corner inside the ball but pulled his shot wide from 6 yards.  The striker completed his hat trick on 82 minutes a few seconds after substitute Dylan McGeough entered the field and dribbled into the box.  The ball was cleared to Wanyama to pushed it right to Brown who then sent it onto Stokes who made no mistake.

When have either of them ever said anything like that?

Not as many games as he should have.

I remember going to see him in a great U19 team when the under 19s used to get to play on the big pitch…..

Unfortunately Tommy Burns had the left mid position covered and Mark Reid was a solid player at left back so he never had the chance to break through……

More of a Celtic man than nicholas and many others of that era though…… I think he was from Castlemilk area ?

Not surprised he tried to make his team compete hard, just as he did against both Rangers (Brewster Cup final) and ourselves, I would be surprised if he ever spoke badly of the Celtic though.

  5. A lot of sympathy for the Peterhead manager McInally on here, there would be a riot on CQN if his thuggish tactics as described by him prematch resulted in serious injury for any of our players, he’s part of the problem within Scotland.

i make to attempt to justify such a comment

however he was roundly called a hun by some …that imo was complete nonsense

btw …the ref dictates how a team can leave a foot in …..if the ref had been fair and reasonable the bad tackles would have ceased

you and I are on the same wavelength tonight….Walker a complete and utter clown, pains me to say he went to the same school as me but he is a hateful person..no doubt. McLeod and Provan great players, you cannot take that away from them but absolute nuggets when putting the boot into us…hate both of them!

Got the son the new Wolfe Tones DVD,it looks like somebody shot it on a phone, poor sound, blurred and silly things like them in q’s for planes, etc not many songs..rubbish.

  11. seen glimpses of the first half on a sausage today and watched the 2nd in the local.

I asked ghuys in the bozzer who supplied pas for 1st goal and they all said Cha (player of the year – thats my ad lib!!) Mulgrew

I asked then how Paddy had played and they all said – is he playing?

I was sooooo disappointed at this as I love McCourt – A fantastic player with plenty vision and gallus. The only player that can rival that gallus in our squad is Stoksie and bhoy did he show it today with his second…… what amazing technique

Anyway – the point of me posting was to say I am grateful for all the CQN’rs that say PMcC was MOTM – wish I had seen the 1st half

  14. McCall etc would never admit to telling players to do that……they would just tell the players to do it……

McInally was injured for a time, and was up against some competition at his then position of left mid or mostly left back…..

The youth team of the time won everything but he never broke through at CP.

I dont recall the badge kissing, I do recall him being a supporter through and through, wearing scarf to big team games etc back then.

Anyway it seems most expect ex celts to show the morals the criticise in ex rangers managers……..

I would like to think our ex guys are a bit above that and do set teams out to do as best they can regardless of opposition. Even if that does mean physical intimidation to balance skill imbalance……it is one of the few chances they have, the huns have succeeded with it for years.

Neil Lennon was talking about McInally earlier in the week, recalling his time coaching the youngsters at Parkhead.

He suggested that he might be brought back in a coaching role some time in the future.

I hope that idea is now right off the agenda ,and I hope he gets some suitably appreciative remarks from his section in the stand next time he tries to use his season ticket…Another Uncle Timmie on the make..

did Lennon or Shields play for Celtic?

They try to play football and their teams are doing ok in the league…

Jim McInally should be ashamed if he thinks that is how football should be played..

  21. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Some total tripe being spouted on here about some guys who wore the Celtic strip with pride and distinction.

One, Davie Provan was awarded a testimonial, scored in a cup-final and was an excellent Celt. The other, Murdo Macleod, a life-long Rangers supporter excelled in games against them.

Shame that they are being labelled with some real bile on here. Achievements in the 78-83 period being rubbished too.

It’s almost as if anyone is a target sometimes. Guys could it just be that other supporters and ex-players see things a little less slanted than you ?

  24. Some on here need to man up a bit

Professional football is not played nor managed by angels

I recall that Paddy Crerand was once sent off playing for MU for lifting a hand to an opponent

The late and much revered Matt Busby admonished him by saying

“Son you can do much more damage with your feet than with your hands”

My older brother tells me than one of the first noticeable differences that Mr Stein brought to the club was that against the huns when we were kicked we now kicked back!

Peterhead were a bit rough but anyone who saw Johnny Doyle make his debut against Dundee would say that Peterhead were positively Corinthian in their approach!

Our current squad lack a couple of guys who are old enough to know the tricks of the trade

Does anyone think wee Bertie would have allowed the number 8 to run around assaulting people without some comeback?

Would the CF have put himself about as he did if big Bobo had been playing?

    I tend to think not

    No-one messed with big Victor

We need a CB with more strength and belief than Wilson who continues to look fragile

We need a physical CF – as that is the way the game is played here

With BK injured we could do with a Paul Scholes type midfielder – you know someone who knows exactly when to leave a foot in!
