Petrie would rather sell McGinn to anyone but Celtic

602

It comes as no surprise that Celtic have made a bid for Hibernian’s John McGinn.  The player was the standout central midfield performer in domestic football against a Celtic team who are at their strongest in that area.

Should he sign, he would be a similar age to that of Stuart Armstrong when he joined Celtic three years ago, and who he will replace in the squad.  He is also a better player that Stuart was when he left Dundee United.  He has the engine and attitude for Brendan Rodgers to significantly improve him.

Goals grab headlines and the two McGinn scored at Celtic Park last season, as well as his goal at Ibrox which secured a win, raised the player’s profile, but goals only tell a small part the McGinn story.

Hibs will be happy to wait until the last week of August and will try to attract other bidders.  Despite taking a back seat when it comes to day-to-day duties, Rod Petrie remains a key figure at Easter Road and will do whatever he can to sell to anyone but Celtic.  I don’t expect Celtic to pay whatever Hibs ask, so the deal is far from assured, but with only 11 months remaining on his contract, he will definitely leave Hibs before 1 September.

I see Belgium got awful leaky at the back last night….

  1. WHAT IS THE STARS

I think they’re about the same as England, couple of big name players in not their best ever team.

It’ll be close I reckon, if James plays that could swing it for the permed mustachios:))

I am a huge SA fan. Armstrong at his absolute best over his entire Celtic career was excellent.

But his absolute best was too short lived….playing left wing under RD and being injured for much of last season.

And he wasn’t committed long term.

I think McGinn will be a fixture in years to come. If he signs!

I agree with you on Armstrong but I just think there’s better quality out there to replace him with than McGinn.

    I blame the heat primarily….

Born in Aberdeen,I was the last player to score a hat trick in an English fa cup semi final.(1958)

It was for man. Utd,I then appeared in an English fa cup final in 1964 on the losing team.

    Any idea???????

  6. I would take McGinn for a couple of million. I don’t think we could buy a similar level of known quality from another league. He is good enough to be an occasional starter and could grow into being as good as McGregor or Armstrong. I don’t think he is at the Ntcham or Brown level.

Eventually we are going to have to replace Brown – and I think that is going to be a tough one….

” Both of these are defensively poor . Most of the likely England team haven’t played anybody yet .. England are never as good as they think they are . Colombia can be very good , they are also more than capable of being very bad . If James plays , Colombia might just do it “

Apart from Celtic TV (at midnight), does anyone know of plans to televise the Alashkert game next week?

Flouncing would be too good for all of you. I’d rather stay and annoy you instead.

See this take us to the next level stuff? Why not be happy with what is, rather than be unhappy with what isn’t if there is nothing that can personally be done to change what isn’t?

    Roberts is better than Johnstone.

    Armstrong is better than McGinn.

    Squad downgraded.

Roberts and Armstrong don’t want to be at Celtic, both were fringe/squad players last season.

Don’t see McGinn as a downgrade on the Armstrong of last season. Roberts was always going back but given how little he contributed to the team last season (mainly through injury but he also counldn’t displace Forrest when he was fit) he won’t be a huge loss. We need to see if our own youngsters can develop and improve in the first team rather than loaning in and developing other teams youngsters.

  16. McGinn is Broon MKII and, I would imagine, be tutored long-term to take over that role.

I see no comparisons with Armstrong’s game, which is based around the timing of penetrating forward runs.

Hrvatski. No. that may not be the answer you wanted, but at least I did answer. I trust that saves me from a nasty pin prick … but if not, could you at least aim for my lower pack. It is a bit stiff, and this might save me a trip to the acupuncturist. Thanks!

I was going to weigh in on the McGinn transfer. But I seem to recall that it was suggested that us ‘colonists’, who didn’t see Scott Brown play in the flesh week in/week out, couldn’t really appreciate his play.

I am wondering how many have seen McGinn in the flesh week in/week out and how many have watched Neymar live regularly, or even his last three games. Very few, I would wager. Yet, I notice that there are no shortages of opinions (yes on a McGinn, and a cheating bastard for Neymar).

Agree that McGinn and Armstrong are different types of midfielder but I think one will take the other’s place in the squad as we already have McGregor and Nthcam who kept Armstrong out last season. McGinn offers something different, more akin to a younger Brown.

So true, it is important for us who remember a competitive vibrant Scottish League and a quality National team that gave us pride that instil on the younger generation what the game was like and can be again…

What Sir David Murray did to our game – a lost generation – wasn’t tantamount to fraud it was complete extortion.

There was a time when great men like Jock Stein’s foot prints were striding across the Scottish game. Hugh McIlvaney blissfully writing about the Scottish game…

The key words: “if there is nothing that can be done”

The problem, as I see is it, is that there were things that could have, and should have, been done, but were not done. Starting with, if nothing else, voicing opposition to, or at least a position on, the 5WA.

For me, On this issue, Celtic wanted to run with the foxes and hunt with the hares. DD wanted Rangers back, but the Board were concerned about a fan backlash if the Board publicly supported Ranges, so they kept silent (the ‘a big boy done it and ran away’ defence). That is the only explanation I can see that makes any sense of Celtic’s non-response to this issue. Unfortunately, Eventually, that catches up with you.

The problem is, once the other side know you are compromised, you are in trouble.

This is Conjecture on my part, I appreciate. But, if I am right about this, it would explain much of the narrative since then.

Have you looked at the calendar lately? It’s only the 3rd of July.

Truth is, Roberts and Armstrong couldn’t get in the first team last year.

McGinn won’t be a direct replacement for SA anyway. He’s a different type of player. The standout player outside Celtic in the SPFL. He’ll be a great signing.

As for Johnston, he probably isn’t Roberts replacement but don’t write off a teenager before the season starts.

Wait until the window closes before passing judgement.
