Petrie would rather sell McGinn to anyone but Celtic

602

It comes as no surprise that Celtic have made a bid for Hibernian’s John McGinn.  The player was the standout central midfield performer in domestic football against a Celtic team who are at their strongest in that area.

Should he sign, he would be a similar age to that of Stuart Armstrong when he joined Celtic three years ago, and who he will replace in the squad.  He is also a better player that Stuart was when he left Dundee United.  He has the engine and attitude for Brendan Rodgers to significantly improve him.

Goals grab headlines and the two McGinn scored at Celtic Park last season, as well as his goal at Ibrox which secured a win, raised the player’s profile, but goals only tell a small part the McGinn story.

Hibs will be happy to wait until the last week of August and will try to attract other bidders.  Despite taking a back seat when it comes to day-to-day duties, Rod Petrie remains a key figure at Easter Road and will do whatever he can to sell to anyone but Celtic.  I don’t expect Celtic to pay whatever Hibs ask, so the deal is far from assured, but with only 11 months remaining on his contract, he will definitely leave Hibs before 1 September.

I see Belgium got awful leaky at the back last night….

I quite like McGinn, but I just don’t see where he fits in with us.

For me you have to play him in a midfield three and we normally have a two.

I’d like us to use a counter-attacking 4-3-3 in some European games, but even then you would be going with Brown, Ntcham and McGregor, with Kouassi and Bitton as other options.

If he could get the goals of an Armstrong that would maybe make him worth a punt but there are other areas that need more attention.

  3. Bada Bing – We could add SPFL ‘not good enoughers’ to prove the point like Cifci, Hayes and MacKay-Stevens too fella.

I like the idea of kicking on from a position of strength. That’s all.

Timaloy29 – I like Johnstone but looks like he needs regular game time elsewhere and nowhere near the level of Paddy. We’d be mad to make that comparison.

I know it’s early and I’d hope we get quality in the RB, CH and RW areas instead of overloading the midfield.

Best ever ” not good was Tommy Callaghan . The abuse that man got was extraordinary . !

  5. Imo, Kouassi is the natural successor to Brown. Hope he stays.

Hope McGinn can learn game discipline. Imo, the most important midfield player at Hibs last season was McGeough. A far better player than McGinn, imo. (And I do know they play different roles; Mcgeough was the brains of the team; he brought the others into play.)

Sill, if our manager sees something in Mcginn, that’s fine by me.

Maybe we should offer Kouassi to Hibs on loan for the season. Get a full year under his belt with Lenny and return ready to start playing more games for us next summer. He’ll get little game time this season if brown stays fit. He’s still only 20 years old, but needs more game time

  9. So Hibs want £5 million for McGinn?

    Allegedly!

    Aye, they’ll get that.

  11. Personally I think that Kouassi is a better player than McGinn.

    …and about three years younger(?).

I would, also, we rather send out Calvin Miller on loan instead of Mikey Johnston.

    HH!!

  12. I think McGinn will be a foil for Brown. SB has been injury free almost for two seasons at the age of 33. Thats quite lucky. I think initially JM will play in games after Europe and games against smaller Clubs when we lack some drive on occasions. They may team up in some away Euro games. Ideally if SB can shed some of the load he can be at full fitness for bigger games and prolong his career. A potential downside is it has been said that SB thrives on playing every week.

  13. Do we need to buy McGinn because we’re expected to buy him and need to spend a couple of million? We are presently littered with midfielders who cannot/ do not get a game. Apart from Kouassi there is Kundai Leroy Jeremiah Benyu who went on loan and played a grand total of four games. Personally I’d prefer to see the defence being strengthened and nurturing the midfield talent we have at the Club. Our problems in Europe are always down to inadequate defending. Sort that out first.

It is still very early days in the transfer market but defence needs to be sorted.

  14. I don’t get this drive thing…

We play packed defences domestically with high levels of possession….breaking through and around teams with skill and guile….

    Come back Paddy Roberts :)

“There is no doubt whatsoever that the crook formerly known as Minty and his lackeys at the SFA have set Scottish football back about 50 years in terms of competing because that is how long it will take to get out of the doldrums if reform was to actually take place now.

Well that’s the point… I’m sure some think my obsession with the crooks a bit OTT…

However in the eighties, which was not a golden period of Scottish Football by any means we had a National team that could qualify for major championships, had four or five Clubs equivalent of the best in England and could compete (and win) in European Competitions…

Since then football has changed massively – it is more popular, there’s more money in the game, strides in technique, fitness and athleticism have improved players.

The Competitions at Club and National level are phenomenal…

We were equivalents of Yugoslavia, what is that country today? 7.5 nations… some would slaughter us… all would give us a game.

We are now well below Wales…

While football has been progressing we’ve been going backwards…

    It is a National tragedy…

    Hail Hail

Personally I think that Kouassi is a better player than McGinn.

I’ll second that, imo we appear to be interested in him due to his background than playing ability.

  20. Those saying Roberts is better than Mikey Johnston are basing this opinion on what?

Paddy of two seasons ago definitely but he was poor last season.

I know injuries and late start played a part but even when he had game time he was fairly ineffective.

Can Johnston replace him?Only by giving him game time will we know.

Those saying McGinn is not Celtic class are basing this on what.

Remember people saying Armstrong was not when he signed and under Delia this seemed to be the case.

But with coaching and playing in his natural position he proved a lot of people wrong.
