Petrie would rather sell McGinn to anyone but Celtic

602

It comes as no surprise that Celtic have made a bid for Hibernian’s John McGinn.  The player was the standout central midfield performer in domestic football against a Celtic team who are at their strongest in that area.

Should he sign, he would be a similar age to that of Stuart Armstrong when he joined Celtic three years ago, and who he will replace in the squad.  He is also a better player that Stuart was when he left Dundee United.  He has the engine and attitude for Brendan Rodgers to significantly improve him.

Goals grab headlines and the two McGinn scored at Celtic Park last season, as well as his goal at Ibrox which secured a win, raised the player’s profile, but goals only tell a small part the McGinn story.

Hibs will be happy to wait until the last week of August and will try to attract other bidders.  Despite taking a back seat when it comes to day-to-day duties, Rod Petrie remains a key figure at Easter Road and will do whatever he can to sell to anyone but Celtic.  I don’t expect Celtic to pay whatever Hibs ask, so the deal is far from assured, but with only 11 months remaining on his contract, he will definitely leave Hibs before 1 September.

I see Belgium got awful leaky at the back last night….

Personally I think that Kouassi is a better player than McGinn.

I’ll second that, imo we appear to be interested in him due to his background than playing ability.

*So how come we got rid of Benny Rooney who captained a very good St Johnstone against us in the LC Final and didnae sign Kevin Gallacher.

The key words: “if there is nothing that can be done”

The problem, as I see is it, is that there were things that could have, and should have, been done, but were not done. Starting with, if nothing else, voicing opposition to, or at least a position on, the 5WA.

For me, On this issue, Celtic wanted to run with the foxes and hunt with the hares. DD wanted Rangers back, but the Board were concerned about a fan backlash if the Board publicly supported Ranges, so they kept silent (the ‘a big boy done it and ran away’ defence). That is the only explanation I can see that makes any sense of Celtic’s non-response to this issue. Unfortunately, Eventually, that catches up with you.

The problem is, once the other side know you are compromised, you are in trouble.

This is Conjecture on my part, I appreciate. But, if I am right about this, it would explain much of the narrative since then.

    ==============

The problem with that narrative is it does not take account of the fact that Celtic needed support from other clubs to contest the 5 way (if they wanted to) and in the absence of that support they were powerless.

Support for the idea they tried to act but got no support comes from the letter of 25th May 2012 to

SFA cc UEFA saying that SFA should exercise care in dealing with the ebt and side letters issue, two months after SPL lawyers had started to investigate that issue, but had they got support from UEFA then LNS might have proceeded along the Compliance Officer path under the Justice Protocol which is non compliance with the responsibility RFC had to act honestly to fellow members clubs of the SFA in their use of side letters, not did they break registration rules.

Then last September Celtic via the SPL challenged SFA to revisit how SFA had dealt with the ebt issue and SFA blanked the SPFL, which suggests no appetite by other clubs to support an investigation.

Only by dismissing those efforts as a sham does the narrative you expressed stand up.

On the matter of being able to do something, the challenge is to make the other clubs realise that it is in their best interests to support an investigation and that is going to need the will, cunning and leverage to make it happen.

I’m not dismissing your point about Celtic not wanting RFC to disappear, but the dangerous consequences to Celtic of that happening were nothing like those other clubs faced and if too many went belly up without the income that RFC brought to them in TV money and away gate money, who would Celtic play?

I think the interdependent nature of football has to be part of any judgement process, rather than its all about the masons or establishment support for TRFC, what they stand for and who supports that stance.

Self interest y is not determined ultimately by any allegiance to any sect o belief but to the answer to the question ” if I do this or don’t do this, will I be able to eat tomorrow?”

  22. Commentators here seem fixated with any player who has or is playing in EPL.

Overemphasis on the most basic play but completely ignore gaffes.

The commentators on the Australia game on more than one occasion gave Jedinak credit for passes Rogic made.

Since they have paid ridiculous money for EPL rights then hyping up that league and players is a must.

Forsberg who has been distinctly average gets shot deflected for Swedish goal. 1-0
