Petrov, Bernardo and Engels

161

Paulo Bernardo was one of a clutch of players who raised the level on Sunday to achieve a comfortable victory.  He did more than enough to ensure he will keep his place for the visit of Hearts in 11 days.  By then, he will be close to fully fit, having started his preseason when joining the club at the beginning of August.

Arne Engels will likely make an appearance from the bench in that game, and in the next against Slovan Bratislava.  The League Cup tie at home to Falkirk should give Brendan Rodgers an opportunity to start Arne.

Watching Stiliyan Petrov on TV coverage at the weekend brought back memories of one of our big success stories in central mid.  Stiliyan was 19 and a full Bulgarian international when he arrived in Glasgow, but his first season was far from promising.  Announced as one of Europe’s most promising young talents, we couldn’t see what the fuss was about.

John Barnes did not help, when he played him at right back.  The sight of Motherwell’s Lee McCulloch whipping past him, as 10-man Well won at Celtic Park, still lingers.  Stiliyan needed time to cope with his new environment.  Playing where you are expected to win every game is different than anything he knew back in Bulgaria, or that Arne experienced in Augsburg.

I could also make the case that our priorities should be to develop both Paulo and Arne.  That way, we have a procession of talent available to step up when one leaves.  For me, that means Paulo keeps his place.

  1. On a Teams call at work watching Chris O’Shea present with his Celtic mug front and centre as per usual.

    😃🇮🇪🍀🏆

  2. when anyone suspects the fixture computer at the scottish league conspires to disadvantage celtic i find it really difficult to say it is a thing.

the bottom line is be in european competition and playing on a tue/wed rather than europa on a thurday will dictate when league games actually take place.

and us being away from home after the european games, well, so whit.

our other biggest impacter offcourse being even more tv games.

however, when things are not going right for them across the city, this really takes the buscuit, 8pm on a sunday, there will be 30,000 there.

    ——————-

Rangers’ home game against St Johnstone next month has been moved to a 20:00 BST, Sunday evening kick-off.

The move to Sunday, 6 October is due to Rangers being on Europa League duty on the Thursday, while the late start is the result of the Great Scottish Run being held in Glasgow earlier that day.

It means that all three Scottish Premiership fixtures that day will start at different times.

Ross County host Celtic at 12:00 for live television coverage, while Aberdeen entertain Conference League qualifiers Heart of Midlothian at 15:00.

Hibernian’s visit to Ibrox has also been moved because of Rangers’ Europa League participation, with the match now scheduled for a 12:00 kick-off on Sunday, 29 September.

Reading hun media and they are arguing that we got an easier group than them. We have CL finalist; EL winners; two semi finalists from the conference.

    Obviously don’t check the facts…

  4. but to be fair to villa, at least the kids prices are realistic.

Junior season ticket holders pay just £20 in all price zones other than Zone 1 and 1888 seats.

For a full breakdown of prices, please see the table below.

The Club also take this opportunity to announce pricing for domestic cup matches should we be drawn at home. All Carabao Cup matches and the first home fixture in the FA Cup will be priced at just £25 for adults and £10 for children in all areas of the Stadium.

I can’t help myself laughing when I see references to James Forrest “pulling out”.

Dont know if our CL dates can affect our League fixtures but general sale tickets for our next home game, Hearts are going on sale from 10am tomorrow. A Saturday fixure Sept 14 with 3pm KO. Hurrah!

Hopefully our home game against Aberdeen scheduled for Saturday 19 October 3pm will not be moved especially with an early kickoff over in Atalanta the following Wednesday.

Do you know offhand if there are hard and fast rules in place which would prevent the Broadcasters moving our games to Sundays before or after CL games?

  7. St Johnstone v Celtic Saturday 28 Sept 5.45 ko

Particularly when it emerges that those games are being played at Hampden.

Unless they have decided to just go with the three stands.

I’d be surprised if they can get the work completed and safety checks completed and signed off by GCC planning department within four weeks.

  9. CELTICMAC

They can’t move our games to Sunday if we have a CL tie the following Tuesday.

  10. and europa/confernce particparticipation would see that teams nex league game have to take place on the sunday.

  11. gghs,

they are back at the badgers hovel for the dundee cup game with only 3 stands open

the copland roaders are raging, and many will not attend the game.

Think that may be the old TSB Head Office, also was a Bank, on corner of Ingram and Glassford Street. A young Kelvinbhoy started his working life there in June 1986……..think I got in because they didn’t see Saint in front of my secondary school name (Trinity in Cambuslang), so dipped under the radar 😀

    Thanks.

I read somewhere else that they were claiming that after the cup tie they would be back there full time so that they could avoid playing all their home euro ties at Hampden.

Probably someone putting two and two together to make five.

    I blame the skools.

  15. i liked the comment on rm from one of theirs. and i do blame the schools

I got an e-mail supposedly from an old friend I hadnt heard of for a while,

Started off saying he was sorry he hadnt been in touch for w whille, would it be OK for him to talk on e-mail.

Returned say, nae bother. Within a second I got a reply asking if I wpuld buy anApple voucher from Amazon to help a friennds daughter suffering with liver cancer. He said he tried Amazon but it didn’t connect and asked me to buy it an he would repay me sson as, hmmm.

Smelt a rat, phoned him, and he said his total email stuff etc had been hacked.

    So, be careful

I got a msg from “my daughter” to say she had lost her phone and was texting from a friends number

Only thing was my daughter would have wrote it like all teenagers do nowadays

With no more than 3 letters per word……and this msg was in perfect english

    So obvs not her

Day or so later my mum got a similar msg my mum gets a similar msg from “me” tho this time she responds and gets asked for £2,500 to help “me” out of a jam

She nearly sent it too…….thankfully she called me first

These scams thru text message are on the rise and very convincing

  17. Juat a postscript to Alex Gordon’s article on the Khun VAR offside decision on Sunday, In days gone by, before VAR, referees/linesman would not have given offside because when things were so desperately tight the decision went in favour of the attacker. The still picture that we have been fed shows that perhaps one shoulder was ahead of another by about a few centimetres. It is simply out of the question to say Khun was seeking to gain advantage from an offside decision and, as Alex says, what if the game had been level and we’d been in the 90th minute.

Arsene Wenger, in his capacity withFIFA, has proposed that the ‘clear daylight’ test should apply when judging an offside situation – I believe it has been on trial somewhere – the sooner it comes in the better.

  18. Darwin, the still picture is immaterial, it is when the ball is passed ,and he’s about 2 yards onside ,seems we have asked for an explanation.

  19. rumours …….

in the interests of sporting integrity, and to have some balance, “the rangers” have asked the spl to schedule a celtic home fixture to 8pm on a sunday and to be played at hampden…

  20. the 1888 seats, which run alongside the directors’ box at the top of the Trinity Road Stand, any ticket will cost a mind-blowing £97 and £82 for season ticket holders – including under-18s.

  21. Another reason to focus on PB and Arnie is to start to think of the day calmac wanes – unless rangers stumble across 2 or 3 quality midfielders soon; calmac’s age is our biggest threat.

My son started a job this week and had to do mandatory training on TAX EVASION!

Guess who the case study was – yup RANGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. I think Celtic have priced the CL tickets realistically.

What a nightmare trying to get them. It seems online is the only way now.

Not all locations have good wi fi or full internet capability. Trying to get a text with a one time password is impossible.

Why can you not just order via tje Humble fone ?

The system was dreadfully slow on Monday moreover you have 15 minutes to purchase. If you are buying multiples, I have three in the group, then for each purchase per client, you have to ” add to basket” and go back to the interface for the next line.

Furthermore the system was so slow I ended up with a system error! Overcome that and you may be asked to verify the purchase via your bank app.

I made it with a few minutes to spare and I spent 27 years working in IT 🙃

From earlier. That would make sense as regards the Tuesday CL matches.

But as !!bada bing!! has just posted they have moved our away game at St Johnstone, Sat 28 Sept, to 5.45pm.

Might not seem much of a change but we are away to Borussia Dortmund the following Tuesday. That said looks like we will benefit to some extent from our CL fixtures.

Suurprised to see Adam Montgomerie listed as a forward (though pleased for him) given last time I saw him he was playing left back. Maybe Mikey Johnston would have been a better option.

    !!bada bing!!

Disappointed re Holm, think he has got something about him. Brendan does not seem to be a fan though.

And he is Norwegian, not Scottish, probably worked against him.
