Pin it to the dressing room wall

Straight from the off on Saturday you knew this would be a more accomplished Celtic performance than our last league outing against Dundee. Brown and Bitton in central mid, with Charlie Mulgrew partnering Erik Sviatchenko in central defence.

Charlie is at the back end of his career but you know you are getting a seasoned SPL pro, who is going to clear his lines, attack the ball, and not try to be Beckenbauer (i.e. he’d rather not attempt a 20 yard pass than risk misplacing one).  I’ve liked the look of Erik since he’s arrived, our clean sheet count has improved immeasurably, but the Dane was culpable at the Thistle penalty. He was turned, then put his arm around his opponent’s waist. A nailed-on penalty which could have cost us in different circumstances.

I loved Kilmarnock striker Josh Magennis’ comments after his teams’ defeat at Pittodrie: “We can do Aberdeen a favour next week by beating Celtic, we haven’t lost in our two games against them this season.”

Pin it to the dressing room wall at Lennoxtown, Ronny.  We battered Kilmarnock last time out, creating 20 attempts but couldn’t convert, and we let them off the hook earlier in the season at Rugby Park by conceding a late penalty.  No mistakes this time.

I think because Erik made such an obvious grabbing gesture even though no real contact was made, it gave the MIB the chance he was after.

HT and CALTONTONGUES, Erik worries me too, not due to his lack of height, I think he jumps well and we have all seen 6ft4″ guys who cant get off the ground, it’s more his lack of pace and rashness in challenges

Me too.. Watched him on the tele playing for Midtjylland in the Europa League . 2 games v Napoli and a game v Legia Warsaw . . Slow , clumsy and rash . . A potentially fatal combination against good players.

Re: Big Eric – have been saying to Wee BGFC since his second game that he’s an accident waiting to happen, especially against a quick, nippy player. Too slow in a one-to-one race too.

Gives us a bit of strength, which we were missing. but he is slow.

Not as worried about him as I am about Lawwell, though.

We should know that refs will give anything against us when there is a possibility. Izzy v Killie, Boyata v Aberdeen and Hamilton, now Erik on Saturday. Most of these were needless challenges. The players have to be a bit smarter.

  6. Thought it was a penalty myself when i was watching it.

I also initially thought it was Charlie Mulgrew that had given it away!

Thought it was a desperate effort from Erik after being beat far to easily.

Unfortunately our games can be reffed differently, but whether we would have got it or not doesn’t really make it any less a penalty.

As for the Thistle players not claiming it, the ref was very quick to award it so perhaps that’s why there was no need?

    Just my take on it!

  7. Mountblow Tim and Starry Plough – sorry to learn of your very sad news. The pain of losing someone so close can be devastating however the pain will ease hopefully over time. The thoughts and prayers of the CQN community are with both of you at this time. Stay strong

See Erik is taking a bit of stick.

I must be watching a different player.

Erik is a very good footballer…tackles everything, brings the ball out of defence, can ping passes all over the park.

I will go as far as to say….He wont be here long.

Erik and Charlie…..are so much better than Boyata and Simunovic.

As for Callum, i thought he played really well, great goal.

And that was never a penalty.

However, we werent brilliant against Thistle….but we played well, in every position.

    Much more solid imo.

    Keep Charlie where he is.

  10. In a game being reffed to the letter of the law, it was clearly a penalty. The point is one of extreme inconsistency, with PT players committing the same offence on numerous occasions, but there being no foul. Not only PT players ofc, teams get away with this offence every game against us, that is where the problem lies.

ps how many times were they allowed to “tackle” the Celtic player long after the ball had left the scene?.

Having watched numerous soft penalties in European and the English / Welsh league I am not surprised that the penalty against Eric was given.Personally I think it’s a joke, but this is the guidelines that Referees are instructed to adhere to.

I also still think that we should use Press Conferences to air our opinions. On all aspects that affect our club. Damn any consequences or ruffled feathers that speaking the truth will entail.

HH to all, and especially to those who are in grief.

  14. The award of the Thistle penalty has to be looked at in the context of the non-awarded fouls for 2 late tackles on Lustig as he cleared the ball, and the ignoring of the blatant push on GMS, before he somehow recovered his balance to get the cross over for our first.

A gentle caress in the penalty area is enough for awards to go against us, though.

  15. Few posts today on rights and wrongs of penalties given against us.

None of these would matter if we had a team capable of ruthlessly building on leads.

  18. Softest penalty you’ll ever see….till the zombie nation arrives in our league.

We’re being softened up, precedents being set, expectations being moulded.

Same goes for the ‘after the ball’s gone’ hits that our players receive in every game.

    Our response? Nada.

Our scope for increased cuteness/savvy? Limitless.

  20. We have lost vital cup-ties and dropped points due to sendings-off and being reduced to ten men – however the loss of in-form Leigh Griffiths to injury could spell disaster, not for a particular game, but for the season as a whole.

There is nothing much we can do about this risk, except manage it and withdraw him as soon as we have a game ‘in the bag’.

Leigh has been relatively lucky with injury this season, let”s hope that this lasts, as quite honestly I don’t know how we would set the team up without him – if only Kris was in his 30 goals per season form.

We are not in a position to experiment from the start of matches, so early substitution looks like our only way to try something else – fingers crossed HH

  22. QUONNO @ 2:12 – agree with what you say – in the ICT semi, Ross semi, we should have been three up before the red card, on each occasion – at Hamilton we had opportunities to score two, or three, after losing Boyata.

Even against Thistle – we should have been well out of sight before the penalty – why are we so wasteful?

That Ronny Delia wants to be a development coach first before a winning manager ? in the article below he is clearly asking to accept that playing young inexperienced players carries a risk, Alex Ferguson combined both, winning manager, develop young players

Ronny Deila believes that the demand for results at Celtic means it’s harder to play youngsters and give them a chance to flourish.

As Celtic look to close in our a fifth successive league title, the pressure to win every game now limits the time he can give to young players, and needs experienced players to see Celtic over the line.

The Hoops are currently one point clear of Aberdeen but have a game in hand over their nearest challengers who continue to push Deila’s side for the title.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, Deila said:

I think the pressure for results here is unbelievable. As a manager, you just get judged by results, so it’s hard to give a youngster a chance because, if you do, it increases your chances of losing.

To think more long term is important — and that has to start with the board at every club. That’s a huge thing.

While fans want to see players like Ryan Christie, Patrick Roberts and Scott Allan on the field more often, Deila is having to stick to players he knows because of the pressure to win games right now.

But, if you know you need to have certain results, you play the safe team. You play the game to win rather than thinking: ‘I will take some chances because we have to learn and, in the end, we will get feedback.’

If you play against a youth team in Spain or Holland, they play the same way no matter who their opponents are.

They would rather lose 10-0 than go away from their principles at a young age. They want to develop, but here everything is about winning and it is killing creativity and development.

Deila used Ajax as an example of a team that openly encourages the use of youth players and who also consistently qualify for Europe in a very technical Dutch league.

You see how Ajax do it. I’m not saying they do everything right, but they get youngsters forward because they use them in their team. And, at the same time, they buy the best youngsters from other teams, as well.

They want to be up winning the league and fighting in the Champions League, but they have a very clear strategy that they also want to have young players on the pitch.

But this is a Scottish issue. This is the problem. If nobody gets a chance and can’t make mistakes, how can they progress? There’s no chance.

Celtic are in action again early on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock.

  31. Weeminger
