Player development reputations

110

Jeremie Frimpong’s supposed move back to English football has been talked about for most of the years since he left Celtic as a 20-year-old in 2021.  Now it looks like Liverpool are set to pay his release clause at Bayer Leverkusen to secure a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Celtic sold for £11m, which felt like an incredible fee for a player with lots of skill but even more still to develop.  Leverkusen recognised his potential (more than I did) and were the perfect club for him to flourish at.  As a consequence, Celtic will earn a kick-back if he moves for a fee, although a slice of that will go back to Manchester City.

Compare this to Moussa Dembele, who left Celtic at 22, but went to a club without an elite development strategy.  He earned plenty but stagnated at Lyon and left on a free to go to Saudi two years ago.  Reputations matter to selling clubs, even more so for players and agents.  So many players wither in the stands.  It’s important we have more development stories like Nicolas Kuhn, than Maik Nawrocki.  The next batch of potential recruits are watching.

  1. Do we measure success vs SPL skint opposition?

Do we pass the CL test after having our easiest CL group EVER yet failing to defeat Bayern Munich and their rookie manager who were there to be taken as were Aston Villa. Yet we were punished within 5 minutes of the AV game going 0-2 down because we have a manager who forgot what happened to us in Dortmund?

Do we measure our success in vs being unable to defeat Barry Ferguson’s raggle-taggle hun team over 2 games?

Do we measure success as to why we now live in a Celtic period were we are apparently so far in front, yet if if anyone dares to think outside of the flock of sheep x-60,000 brainwashed narrative then that non brow beaten thinker will be seen as troublesome?

How about we are so successful that not a serious club would cast a second glance at our manager, (or captain) who keeps making the same mistakes on the big stage, especially as he refused to redirect the team at Leceister because his ego wouldn’t let him, or he simply didn’t know how to do what had to be done?

Are we so successful that we are scared to stand by our assaulted goalkeeper who went onto National radio and said he’d had “30 – 40 Missiles” thrown at him by hun fans, and then the manager when asked about his goalkeepers comments said he never heard what his GK had said, and then out of the blue, the GK is dropped for the next game?

If success means dodging issues then Corporate Celtic FC since 1994 are the runaway World Champions!

What will prospective new signing targets think about going to Celtic were health and safety regulations don’t enter the building?

How can Inter Milan Centre Halfs kick the ball into the stands for 120 minutes and be on the verge of winning yet another CL trophy, yet Celtic CH’s are branded failures because they can’t go on maizy dribbling runs out of defence and over the halfway line?

How about getting over yourselves and respond to the post and not the poster if you are big enough to do so?

If “develop pace” means get quicker? …

… You actually can develop pace.

Very tall order requiring almost OCD levels of dedication to improving … but can be done.

Based on current UEFA Country Ranking (from club coefficients)

    Scotland are 11th.

We signed prospects from clubs in countries ranked 11th (Odin), 15th (Maik), 20th (Gustaf).

Said prospects were reportedly doing OK when we “swooped”.

IMHO, it’s unreasonable to suggest they are duds.

Hasn’t worked out plain and simple.

    The factors can be complicated.

Brendan himself spoke at a recent media conference about players having talent and pedigree but who just cannot deal with the incessant expectations at Celtic.

  5. wee JF.

    ——————

Frimpong didn’t take long to settle at Celtic and he’d finish his only full season with the club with a winners’ medal in all three domestic competitions in Scotland.

And he’s revealed that a key reason he enjoyed his time in Glasgow so much was his relationship with manager Neil Lennon.

Frimpong revealed how he still “loves” Lennon and says their relationship at Parkhead was like father and son.

He added: “My time at Celtic was amazing. I won everything there. There was this manager called Neil Lennon. I love him till this day. He loves me. Our relationship was like father and son.

“Sometimes the players would say go and speak to your dad and things like that. After we won the cup I think I ran to him and we both started laughing.

“I remember when I got the red card (in 2019 League Cup final against Rangers) I was like ‘oh my days what did I just do?’ We were leading 1-0 but that red card was a penalty for them. I was like ‘what did I just do?’ If they score now I am off and we are down to ten men against Rangers.

“I remember watching the penalty and Fraser Forster saved it. That moment I was so happy but than I had to relax as there was 30 minutes to go. I was sent to a room to watch it on TV. This was the worst time of my life but when the whistle went it was the best feeling.”

  6. oh and a bye the way.

Cektic podcasts last night reporting that the “sell on ff” due to Celtic is 30% of the profit over the orginal fee.

And that the price is a contracted £29m get out clause.

    ergo 29-11 = 18

    30% = £5.4m.

are we sure there is a fee due to man city ? surely they got a cut of the original £11m from Leverkuses ?

even then I am not sure how much you could put in for a future sell on as he was a development player, and there are rules around those.

apparantely, we didnt do celbrations before, and we do them now because when they won 55 and celbrated by rioting in George Square, well we had to copy them one very insightful fella says this …………

“ours was a spontaneous celbrating of pent up frustartion because we could not see the rangers win and we were not allowed in the stadium on that day because of covid, but now the manks are trashing glasgow for the last 4 years, well lets see what happens when we win it for 56.”

I attended today the Funeral.Mass for Monsignor Charles Cavanagh who was a frequent contributor to this site and to the Celtic Board, such was his passion for the team.

Needless to say it was packed out,Mass was celebrated by the Bishop and Priests of Paisley Diocese, also in attendance was both Peter Lawwell and Michael Nicolson, which I thought was a nice touch and one which would probably be overlooked,so well.done to them I am sure Father Charlie would have been delighted.

    May he rest in peace.

I made it over to Lennoxtown for the burial.

I wondered some as to why Charlie picked there to be committed.

But my goodness what a back drop to a cemetary, spectacular setting.

I never met the good father, but held him in the highest esteem from on here, not only the Lisbon stories but also the geneology and the connections to the Port.

    CB position.

    IF CCV stays …

Liam and Auston will be given left side.

Stephen will be welcomed back in to work right side with Cam.

Dane will go out on loan to an SPFL team.

Maik and Gustaf will be sold.

No new CB aged over 20 will be signed unless on a free.

  21. Evening all’

Listening Clyde SS this evening. The main topic is Mr Ancelotti’s laddie taking charge at Snake Mountain.

Their reasoning, his Dad will have educated him, as a consequence his contacts will be incredible and is a sure fire winner.

Now only we in Scotland had a successful football Manager who had won at the highest level, eg, EPL, European trophies etc. If only he had a son who wanted to follow him into football management and enjoy all the advantages of a successful dad provides.

Which reminds me, how are Peterborough United doing at home and in Europe.

Nothing on the table for Andy Robertson freed. Story goes he was ‘too wee’ , got a lifeline from Dundee Utd ? Distinction being somebody made a decision on him that he wasn’t making it. Bringing it up to date, – we didn’t want to lose Rocco Vata Daniel Kelly Ben Doak they were all made good offers but chose to leave. Celtic can’t compete with England for young players, it’s a very old problem.

  26. Well done St.Stivs and ExCathedra for making it over to Fr Charlies mass/internment.He was a gentleman and his tales of being with the Lions in Estoril in 1967 are part of this places fabric,a big loss to cqn with his queries on how Celtic play and a soft reminder of his vocation by remembering to pray for posters on here who suffered illness, knew someone going thro pain as well as praying for all who suffered loss.

I have 2 memories of Fr Charlie, one being a reader in Lisbon 2017,when he said mass 50 years on from those attending mass on the morning of our clubs greatest triumph. Many on another group i am in remembered him at Fatima on that trip, visiting shortly after celebrating it centenary of the appearance of the Virgin Mary.

Fr Charlie often posted with total humility of his 1967 experience, feeling and holding the European cup.

My second memory was at the celebratory mass for Monsignor Kavanagh for 60 years of work in his vocation at St Marys Greenock and afterwards in the parish halls wheee parishioners done Monsignor Kavanagh proud with flowing tea and tables full of food.

He will be a sad loss to cqn in a year or so it has lost many.Keep an eye on Lennoxtown Fr.Charlie

    May you rest in Peace.🙏
