Player development reputations

110

Jeremie Frimpong’s supposed move back to English football has been talked about for most of the years since he left Celtic as a 20-year-old in 2021.  Now it looks like Liverpool are set to pay his release clause at Bayer Leverkusen to secure a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Celtic sold for £11m, which felt like an incredible fee for a player with lots of skill but even more still to develop.  Leverkusen recognised his potential (more than I did) and were the perfect club for him to flourish at.  As a consequence, Celtic will earn a kick-back if he moves for a fee, although a slice of that will go back to Manchester City.

Compare this to Moussa Dembele, who left Celtic at 22, but went to a club without an elite development strategy.  He earned plenty but stagnated at Lyon and left on a free to go to Saudi two years ago.  Reputations matter to selling clubs, even more so for players and agents.  So many players wither in the stands.  It’s important we have more development stories like Nicolas Kuhn, than Maik Nawrocki.  The next batch of potential recruits are watching.

  1. BSR @ 6:17 pm,

Yes, I read Stephen say the loan move has improved him all round.

BR&CO seem to have persevered with him, so his pre-season will be interesting.

Pity Fane’s return from loan was once again blighted by injury – if he can get fit hope he gets a chance to compete for a CH berth…

    Hail Hail

  2. If young Ancelotti thinks football is the same over Europe, he’s in for a huge surprise in Bonnie Scotland.

Weather in Scotland, particularly in the ‘Nights fair draw’in in’ period.

‘agriculture’ approach to his Dad’s identified special players.

Roll up, roll up and marvel at the all knowing, all singing, all dancing BLOOM MACHINE. It can turn stones in to bread, water in to wine and make silk purses out of sows’ ears.

Tonight ladies and gentlemen we ask: “oh omniscient one, tell us who should be the next manager of Hertz? Scan the globe and leave no stone unturned “.

    BLOOM MACHINE: Derek McInnes.

  11. My Sunderland mate is over the moon after last night. Think they rode their luck at times, but it’s all about the result.

Let’s play swap-a-hun: “Steven Naismith is the frontrunner to become the next Kilmarnock manager, with fellow Rugby Park player Chris Burke also possibly involved in a shake-up should first team boss Derek McInnes complete his move to Heart of Midlothian. (Record)”.

And people wonder why Scottish football is as poor as it is.

These teams deserve all they get.

Gene thanks for the Hoople. My first ever first-time guess! And I even spelled it correctly (obviously, otherwise it wouldn’t have been a ‘first-time guess’).

“Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis took to the field after the game to express his concern to manager Nuno Espirito Santo over how Awoniyi’s injury was handled”

    Spin, eh?

For those of us (myself included) who thought this was an arrogant, egregious pr*ck publicly undermining his manager because he saw the Champions League bootie slipping from his grasp?

    Turns out we were wrong.

He’s a plump, benevolent angel (halo at the cleaners for a polish) whose only concern was for an injured human being.

    Bless.
