Players and manager with common purpose

803

Could someone remind me the last time we heard rumours that Ronny Deila had players rebelling against him?  I heard it often, and put it to the club, but was told the players had bought-into the changes, then underway and largely unproductive.  I think we got our answer after the full-time whistle yesterday.  This is a group of players and manager with a common purpose.

Celtic are now top of the league, a point away from qualifying from the Europa League knock-out stages, and are beginning to look like a team, but the results are largely secondary to the transformation.  Even if Virgil’s 90th minute winner hadn’t arrived at Pittodrie, progress is evident.  The fragility and lack of cohesion which marked so many of our performances until early last month has gone.

Success has many fathers so it’s difficult to know exactly what’s behind the improvement.  Scott Brown’s return from injury helped enormously, as did the return of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews (although I thought Adam had a torrid time with Niall McGinn yesterday).

The blossoming of Stefan Johansen has to be the most striking element.  He has without doubt been the most improved player this season and an early contender for end of season awards.  By any measure, he had no right to score his goal yesterday.

The return of James Forrest, who yesterday played his fourth game in eight months, will give the squad an extra boost before the final two Europa League group games.  If he has fully recuperated from the problems which blighted him throughout this year, he’ll give fresh impetus to the pacey product Ronny is trying to hone.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

There’s no crime as such; it’s simply crass disrespect for the genuine feelings of the bereaved.

For me, the minute’s silence is for all who have died in all wars.

No conflict is settled by war; the conflict is settled by agreement between the opposing sides, preferably before fighting breaks out.

The poppy has been hijacked by the warmongers and the war industry.

  2. Post match celebrations……

If you need to get a ferry to Ireland or a flight to London then accept my thanks and admiration and don’t think for a nano second this applies to you……but if like me you stay less than an hour from paradise and will run into traffic, how about staying to the end and clapping the Bhoys up the tunnel.

So proud of anyone who broke the silence yesterday , wherever it was, pittodrie george square or anywhere else, remember those who refused to go to war and kill fellow human beings, those irish who were murdered by the british state, and their relatives living in the uk,soldiers are just murdering scum employed by states to kill their enemies, remember the thousands of youth of the usa who burnt their draft cards, lets hear it for the conscientious objectors the real heroes

The Celtic fans who made the life-changing – and ending – decisions to go to war to stop the march of the tyrant Kaiser and Hitler to secure a safe future for US to support Celtic would be so proud of you…

Could Kris drop back and play Mulgrew role. Has good football brain but could be too slow in there. Thing Mulgrew distribution of ball is very poor. Thoughts

This is quite a recent thing for Charlie,as his left foot used to be wonderful.Hopefully it is just a bit of lost form.

Point of order on your point that Celtic only need a point Paul67.

If Zagreb win their next two games and Celtic get only a point v Salzburg we would need to avoid defeat by more than 1 goal in Zagreb.

Celtic Park needs the big crowd on the 27th. The match should be a well out.

  6. Although pleased with yesterday’s result I’ve gotta say I remain unimpressed with the tactics used to gain it. It’s unstructed football akin to that seen on a school playground.

There may be some who’ll point to the run of results since the loss at Hamilton but when did we last face a quality team? I fear that when we next meet a team of some quality we’ll get well and truely tanked, for we’re unorganised and indisciplined, there’s far too much room between defence and attack for the midfield to marshall properly and we continue to pass to feet rather than into space which kills all movement.

Scot Brown, whom I admire for his tenacity was, I’m afraid having another of his indisciplined days and looked like he’d had a bet on someone being sent off. The 2nd yellow was a little harsh but the numerous ‘mistimed’ challenges he got away prior to it would suggest things evened themselves out in the end. It certainly wasn’t a display of leadership and discipline you’d expect from a team captain.

The manager’s celebrations also left me cold, it’s not something I’d expect to see from someone of the stature of a Celtic manager midway through a season. We’ve won bugger all yet.

  7. Paul67

There has been some improvement in the results over the last few weeks ,but I still remain unconvinced by Ronnie Deila and how he sets up this Celtic team.

There is no doubt that he is working hard to build and improve team spirit.

However for me it is too contrived.

Ronnie Delia made a statement last week that he was going to approach the fans after a match.

For me he has been advised that he seems aloof and detached from the support.

It has looked like he is cold and lacks emotional attachment to “The cause.”

His natural demeanor is to to come across as cool and calm.

The fist pumping and joyous dancing and delirious hugging of players was what most fans want to see.

However in reflection it was a league win against an Aberdeen side whom we have a massive financial and playing squad advantage over.

This was not an away win over Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen.

We are less than half way through the season.

This was not joyous celebration after a cup final win or a league championship decider.

    I’m sorry but I didn’t buy it.

Now let’s get onto the improvement in the team.

    It is minimal .

We are beating SPFL fodder. We are competing with EL minnows.

Our standards have dropped so far that we are now happy to be drawing with the European Giants Astra.

I for one am not happy with the performances.

Yesterday ,yet again we were dominated ,by a team with a small proportion of our resources.

    You mentioned Adam Mathews.

He is habitually injured ,and has lost his pace. One to let go in my book.

James Forrest, always a better player out of the team than in .

He is also habitually injured, but my main problem with wee Jamesy is that he is a fraud when it comes to helping the team defend from the front.

He continually positions himself so that he is between opposition players and always just that little bit too far off his opponent to put in a crunching tackle.

In my playing days we called these boys “shitebags”.

Now I will have all the do good Celtic supporters telling me that I should never call a Celtic player a bad name.

We have no ball winner in midfield and a team full of players that very rarely win 50/50 tackles.

We are outmanned in midfield far too often.

Our best players are Gordon,VVD,Denayer ,and Guidetti.

One still has a question mark over his fitness.

The other three are likely not to be Celtic players next season.

We have had to field our best team in the league cup to progress.

It has taken until Nov to top the poorest top league in Scotland in my lifetime.

We were humiliated when we played a mediocre European side like Legia.

If we had to play them today ,I don’t think that the outcome would be any different.

Yes there has been progress since that start of the season ,but it is marginal.

The current PR campaign to endear Ronnie Deila to the Celtic support has all the validity of a Simon Cowell positive comment for an X factor contestant.

The Jury is still out for me.

Let’s see what we win before we consider RD a success.

Let’s see where we finish in the EL.

One other thing on John Guidetti.

Watch the video clips of him at Feyenoord.

Watch his after match celebrations, his badge kissing ,his dig’s at Ajax.

He knows how to play a crowd.

Currently we are starved of a Hero.

He is the nearest thing that we have to one.

The Celtic fans are desperate to anoint him.

Adam Rooney has scored more goals than him this season.

I will hold my breath on the over adulation until he has performed well for us over a longer period of time ,and when he signs a permanent contract at Celtic.

I’ve seen too many badge kissers in my time ,so I am wary.

Ronnie Deila needs a full season to be judged ,right now is only getting a 5 out of 10 from me.

  11. Caesar & The Assassin finally arrives from our very busy printer on Wednesday morning.

Everyone who pre-ordered the book will get a signed copy so hopefully that is going to prove to be worth waiting for. The book is a biggie – over 480 pages and is packed with all the wee stories and all the big incidents from 1978 to 1991. It easily our best book yet.

    You can still pre-order now – http://www.cqnbookstore.com

We have been working on the CQNBookstore.com site and have added lots of new books, Celtic DVDs and even Paddybhoy’s wonderful CQN Beanies – with the cash for these going to Mary’s Meals.

  12. Tiny Tim,

Much of your criticism might be correct, although I don’t share much of it. But I disagree strongly with any idea that our manager “contrived” his end of game performance. If it was contrived, he is some actor. Imo, he looked completely genuine.

That a shocking statement from that numpty. Pretty sad. I’m sure he also came on ranting after the No vote.

My dad was in the army, served in Northern Ireland and elsewhere, season ticket holder like all his family, practising catholic like all his family. It may seem strange to some.

I wonder if Lawellsaccountant thinks that of my father or would he shake his hand for being a fellow Celtic fan in the stand?

People like that are ten a penny these days. Shame this is all faceless, would lawellsaccountant like to put his views forward so eloquently to my father and his colleagues?

I’ve sat and heard the songs myself and its wrong, people who sign up for the army are just young men and boys for the most part.

  14. Tinytim,

That is easily the biggest piece of Swiss cheese I have read on here in some time. This wee beauty caught my eye though.

“Adam Rooney has scored more goals than him this season.”

But our hero has scored more than Suarez.

The Daily record are a disgrace, look at this “report” http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/opinion/sport/hotline/sports-hotline-celtic-remembrance-sunday-4602386

So apparently some fans disrupted minutes silence but as can clearly be held the cretins doing so where out side the ground. Minutes silences should always be respected even if the reason for them are borderline tosh, its about being the bigger people but for the daily sevco to slag of those in the ground who upheld the minute silence because a few who can clearly be heard coming from outside the ground is kind of like the propaganda that faced the Jews in Nazi Germany. The daily record never let the truth get in the way of anti Irish racism and anti Celtic stories.

  20. Better results but still average performances. Look a lot better in defence especially when Lustig is playing.

  21. Tinytim,

Never let pash get in the way of a bit negativity.

Rooney has played 19 games and scored 7 domestic goals.

Super guidetti has played 10. Scoring 9.

Tt, you’d make Charlie and Davie look like happy clappers :)

millions of ordinary.heroic. young people were sent to horrific slaughter in the last 100 years. Thousands came from our own communities, families, fellow Celts, Its them we remember not the sleekit, murdering bampots that designed the wars and sent them there.

At Ibrox , jingoistic supremacy ridden tack is spouted betraying the very evils of nationalism that cause innocents to die. They should be ashamed!

We ,as Celts, should quietly remember the real heroes of all nations.

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

Tiny Tim was once the winner of the Paradise Windfall, and was presented with the cheque in the centre circle as half time. Following which, the club received the following letter:

    Dear Celtic,

I am writing following my winning the £15,000 Paradise Windfall jackpot last week.

Firstly, why does the club insist that the winner must leave his seat in the stands and walk all the way down the stairs, onto the track, and round the pitch before finally getting to the presentation spot? Personally, I would much have preferred if the club had made arrangements to come to me, at my seat. I’m sure others in a similar situation would agree.

Secondly, in this day and age, why oh why are we still using cheques? Surely a bank transfer is a better way to conduct business? You already have my bank details on the database, so why not just run a quick BACS payment?

Further, I had to take 20 minutes out of my busy Monday morning schedule to go to the bank and deposit the cheque. 20 minutes is a long time in business. Time is money.

Moreover, with the Cooperative Bank being an English bank, it takes up to 5 working days to clear a cheque. By the time the cheque’s cleared, you’ll have run yet another Paradise Windfall, meaning you have a minimum 7 creditor days on the Windfall scheme. That means that I am effectively bankrolling the next winner. I am not the bank!

Why oh why can’t Celtic run the business with a true customer focus.

    Regards,

    T. Tim
