Players and manager with common purpose

803

Could someone remind me the last time we heard rumours that Ronny Deila had players rebelling against him?  I heard it often, and put it to the club, but was told the players had bought-into the changes, then underway and largely unproductive.  I think we got our answer after the full-time whistle yesterday.  This is a group of players and manager with a common purpose.

Celtic are now top of the league, a point away from qualifying from the Europa League knock-out stages, and are beginning to look like a team, but the results are largely secondary to the transformation.  Even if Virgil’s 90th minute winner hadn’t arrived at Pittodrie, progress is evident.  The fragility and lack of cohesion which marked so many of our performances until early last month has gone.

Success has many fathers so it’s difficult to know exactly what’s behind the improvement.  Scott Brown’s return from injury helped enormously, as did the return of Mikael Lustig and Adam Matthews (although I thought Adam had a torrid time with Niall McGinn yesterday).

The blossoming of Stefan Johansen has to be the most striking element.  He has without doubt been the most improved player this season and an early contender for end of season awards.  By any measure, he had no right to score his goal yesterday.

The return of James Forrest, who yesterday played his fourth game in eight months, will give the squad an extra boost before the final two Europa League group games.  If he has fully recuperated from the problems which blighted him throughout this year, he’ll give fresh impetus to the pacey product Ronny is trying to hone.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

You are right.Gerry was born in New York an played for U.S. A. and Joe was born in Liverpool and played for England.in those days it was ,place of birth, and not ,your granny’ which decided. Which country you played for. In my youth I was lucky enough to play with both of them. Sadly they have both passed away. May they rest in peace.

    Tontine Tim,

Yes that would be the game. Gerry Baker and Tommy Bryceland were 2 tremendous players. Wasn’t Gerry born in America and his brother Joe in England?

*correct…wee Tommy B was a Celtic mhan tae……allegedly Celtic sent a scout to look at both Gerry and Joe and he came back with Jim Conway.

Was it 1960 that we played them at ibrox and were getting hammered when there was an invasion to try and get the game stopped?

1962 was the semi which we lost 1-3 after thumping them 5-0 at Love Street the previous Monday night.

If RD was “acting” after the match he’s in

    the wrong job.

While explaining your unhappiness with performances there is no mention of time span or traveling time since our last game.

You want Matthews out due to being consistently injured. Harsh.

    James Forrest is a “shitebag ” .

Trust me, JF would have been found out long before he progressed from Celtic boys club to the first team if that was remotely

    true .

In your other criticisms there is no mention

    of boardroom culpability.

You offer only 5 out of 10 so far this season. On technical ability I agree. On effort I see it different.

Sorry to see you deflated after such a good result. HH

  4. zico-maltese bhoy thoughts and prayers have been with you and yours over the weekend. Great news that the doctors are moving fast and that your niece is keeping strong. Look after yourself and family.

That was a repost from yesterday for 67 Heaven.

Delighted to read the update to Bada. Prayers that Wednesday brings everything that your niece and your family would wish for themselves. Keep the faith.

Jamesgang and Living in the love,

Respect for your thoughts and views, so well articulated, on what is an emotive topic. Some people have to realise though that is just another in a long list of sticks to break over our clubs back.

For the SMSM and their cohorts though this is the gift that keeps on giving as it is an annual event ( which is lasting longer each year).

Maybe Livi Bhoys suggestion that we abandon that weekend as a match playing weekend has some merit in it as we are in a no win situation. Having said that there is a part of me that thinks that even that is a form of surrender to those who deny us a choice in these matters.

    ================

Yes, he’s too cumbersome and heavy-footed to operate successfully in a dynamic midfield role.

    BUT…

He will make a very able Beckenbauer-esque centre-back in partnership with Lustig when VVD and Denayer depart for Southern fields, which will be pretty soon I’d wager.

  8. I dread tomorrow. Every year at 11:00am my office hosts a two minute silence for killed British soldiers in all their many conflicts.

So basically at 11:00 am myself and like minded individuals all feel the sudden urge for the toilet…welcome to the new equal north of Ireland.

After all the hysteria over the minutes silence it turns out that only two Celtic fans were arrested and one of them was for gubbin the guy who wouldn’t shut up!

  11. Tontine Tim and Shieldmuir Celt,

    Thanks for the answers.

We had some great games against St Mirren in those days. Would have loved to have seen GB and TB in the hoops. Pat Quinn of Motherwell was a good footballer too.

Wouldn’t bother, going by the way the SPFL has officially bought in to the Big Lie.

That’s the reason that, for me, being top of this particular league doesn’t feel quite as good as it should.

    Mainly due to this farce……..

It irks me even more because it’s targeted more at us than anyone else. Tom McG posted that he witnessed no searches being carried out amongst the Aberdeen support prior to KO, yet 2,000 Celtic supporters were forced into two lines before reaching the turnstiles and each one searched individually.
