Players grounded in their community

963

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

Yeah tend to agree with that. He was playing up to the audience and didn;t do too much wrong. I think as a player at Celtic FC though we don;t want to see our players out blootered playing up to the crowd of another club. He can watch Hibs as much as he likes when he is permitted time off by the club but he needs to tone it down a wee bit.

My feelings were well known with regards to Celtic signing Leigh though I think that SFTB was really the only poster who fully understood where my anger lay, that’s probably more as a result of my lack of an appropriate explanation than anything else.

We knew he came with baggage.

However, on Sunday he did nothing or little wrong.

He’s high profile and he plays for us, he’ll need to get used to it.

Thank God there weren’t camera phones etc when Jinky etc were still playing!!

I’ve been catching up a wee bit this morning, and I watched a link someone sent me to Father Dougal’s appearance on Scotland Tonight last Thursday.

Dougal has turned being thick into an art form. Not even when I’ve been p1shed have I been as stupid as this guy is sober. He also appeared to be on speed. At one point he was like Skippy with all that tutting.

Absolutely hysterical … and he looks like he’s coming apart at the seams.

I remember an article in the Glasgow Evening Times late 80’s, giving us a resume of Celtic’s European Cup final triumph in Lisbon’s ‘Stadium of Light’

John Barnes of Jim McLean notoriety, was the poor news desk sports reporter who took the calls his reply about the article ” Good shout “.

Hugely important issue, but I don’t think many if any on this forum is a “Don’t Know”. I would imagine we have already made up our minds (flags on my garden shed say it for me) and are not likely to be swayed one way or the other.

    Hello Bhoys and Ghirls.

First of all I would like to start off by apologising for not being on here sooner. No wifi in work made that one difficult!

I am extremely overwhelmed and humbled by everyone’s kindness and immense generosity in bidding for my dad’s jersey. I had contacted the auctioneers when it was first listed, but it would have been extremely unfair on the people already bidding on it if it were to be pulled out and I would not have wanted that anyway for that reason, and so I was willing to bid on it myself, however as the days ticked past I was brokenhearted in the knowledge that I could not compete with the kind of cash it was going for and so I was out of the running.

I will never forget the phone call I got at 21.29pm (at a Charlie & The Bhoys gig ) to tell me that Huddleboard had secured the top and that it would be coming home. Emotional is not the word. God bless you all. I am forever indebted to everyone who got involved in this cause. I am utterly speechless at your generosity and you all have given me the next best thing to having my dad back. Part of him is coming home to me now because of you ghuys and I genuinely thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Its easy to understand why my dad loved the Celtic fans so much, they are the true heart of the club.

I am honoured and proud to be able to call myself part of your Celtic Family.

In 100% agreement with those who think its time to call an end to the endless Scots nationalist drivel being regurgitated on a daily basis on this site. We get it OK, you are going to vote yes for a divorce. No amount of posting financial nonsense or revisionist history regarding ‘freedom’ or independence will sway those determined to vote No just as no amount of counter arguments will sway those determined to vote Yes. And yes I am guilty of posting politically based opinions in response to the incessant Nat B/S but find the whole thing so utterly bloody tedious now -s o no more B/S from moi. If I want to debate the English divorce there are more suitable forums to do so.

If he is in a row with the Uruguayan FA and FIFA, I reckon I would side with him, even although I don’t know details of the row.

I remember the economic devastation caused by the closure of The Holy Loch US base.

I’m not intrinsically against nuclear deterrence, but if Scotland votes Yes,I will definitely approve of its removal from our shores.

After all,it will have nothing to do with Scotland by that stage.

But bearing in mind how long and hard Scotland has fought for the jobs at Rosyth,Scotstoun, etc,I wonder at the benefits to be gained from losing a major employer when previously it was viewed as a disastrous option.

  25. Libertadores time

    +++++++++++++

Last six games of Round 5 this week. Only one tonight:-

01:00 Real Garcilaso (Per) v Defensor Sporting (Urg)

Hit by (IMHO) a paltry 12kUSD fine for their fan’s racist behaviour against Cruzeiro’s midfielder Tinga during their opening game, a defeat tonight puts “O Cusqueños” out of the competition.

Real eked out a 2-2 draw in the Inca Cup at the weekend, but have an ongoing war of words between striker Victor Fereirra and manager Fredy “Petroleo” Garcia to add to their worries. However, they do have the home advantage of playing at 3,250m Huancayo in their favour.

Conversely, a win (or draw) could be enough to seal Defensor’s passage (and eliminate Cruzeiro) into the next stage. If that wasn’t enough incentive for them, with the abysmal performances of Penarol and Nacional, Defensor now have the weight of Uruguay’s expectations on their shoulders. Defensor are using the “fly in at the last minute” (from LIma) approach to minimizing the effects of altitude.

Defensor, as some of you will know, have (for me at least) the talent of the tournament in Giorgian de Arasceatta and that makes them good enough for me.

    Prediction : DRAW (65%)

There are thousands of engineering design jobs in London related to the Oil & Gas industry, including the North Sea.

I would expect many of these jobs to come north after a Yes vote. Possibly enough to offset any losses from Faslane.

without any input from ANYBODY other than ourselves.

So think about it. Talk about it. Post about it…. Just DON’T IGNORE IT.

The main reason for ditching the subs, is probably to get the MOD exclusion on exploring for oil off the West Coast lifted. There’s quite a lot of it apparently – connected to the fields being looked at off the NW coast of Ireland (Muckish, Muckish East and so on) .

One could say that updates about Rangers are more tedious

The big difference between Independence and Sevco is we get to vote on Independence.

Sevco, their fans, compliant SMSM, commercially terrified / motivated SFA and other “establishment organs’ will endeavour to smooth things over and hope by default they can continue as the ‘same club’ and therefore keep their history.

By lobbying through websites, social media and vocal and visual protest we can prevent this from happening.

Sevco may eventually stabilise their club, and even compete in Scotland and in Europe, but if their beloved history and ‘world record titles’ claim is rightfully taken from them by being confirmed as a new club, then their spine is broken.

And when we surpass their ‘record’. never to be caught, it will be then and only then the enormity of their fiscal and football misdemeanours will be driven home.

That is why we must keep any wrinkle or nuance of the Sevco legal fiasco in the public domain, now and for long after the Independence issue is resolved
