Players grounded in their community

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

  1. Stab in the dark, but worth a try:

I was in the Kerrydale Suite after last Saturday’s match against Ross County. I had a pocket-sized Panasonic Lumix camera with me. I had it when I got up to take a taxi back to the Carlton George Hotel. I do not recall seeing it after getting up. May have fallen out somewhere, may have got nicked on busy George St. If anyone happened to spot it, let me know, as I had filmed a dedication from the singer to our Bobby Murdoch Phoenix Arizona CSC. (Plus some other touristy stuff.)

If not, hey, t least posting was worth a try …

Rangers claim that if the details of their kit deal with Puma are made public, it will put them at a “serious disadvantage” when trying to negotiate with other suppliers once it ends.

A full four-day hearing will take place in either November of this year or February 2015 – with Green expected to be called as a witness.

Ahmad has already lodged a letter from Green – who he claims was authorised to approve the bonus – dated April 5 last year which appears to show the Yorkshire businessman sanctioning the payment.

It reads: “Dear Immy, now that the Puma and Sports Direct deals are complete, I can confirm that your bonus for 2013 will be not less than £500,000.”

At previous hearing, Summers claimed the letter was “contractually inept, linguistically obscure, stylistically informal and essentially unlawful

I made a similar point this morning in an e-mail to a fellow contributor on here, though with reference only to The Firth of Clyde.

When the potential for oil extraction is extended over territorial waters to the west, there should,as you suggest,be a considerable amount of potential reserves.

So,a question which I have asked often and not once had a reply, who will own Rockall?

  4. Whats the story with johnny doyle ? Saw his name mentioned a few times.

My only problem with leigh griffiths at weekend is he didnt sing the build a bonfire song..

We moan when players dont act more hunan and show their emotions more like normal fans do. Then when they do they are slagged and cursed at by fans and media.

Give me more leigh griffiths, craig bellamy type players than alan shearer’s

“You guys are proud of Scotland’s beauty right? Can you therefore tell the people who are defacing public places with ‘End London rule’ to stop it please? It doesn’t enhance Scottish beauty.”

This kind of thing is nothing new. In the late 60’s a supporter of independence (presumably) had painted on the wall of Scott’s shipyard in Greenock

    “Free Scotland”

However, in the spirit of fairness, it was not just the pros who graffitti’d as someone who was presumably not a supporter of independence added

    “With every four gallons”

(People who have only bought petrol in the last 25 years may not get that…..or know what a gallon is).

Somebody had also painted “Free Dubcek”. However, nobody added anything to that……which is a pity since an East European leader (even an ousted one) would have been better than those 1970 World Cup medals depicting Foreign’s finest.

Graham Wallace is closing in on a deal to pour millions of pounds into Ibrox from Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.

Wallace, who used to work for Manchester City, has been in the spotlight recently following the controversial pay day loans in February having told shareholders in December that there was no need for short term financing.

In recent weeks the Sevco chief executive has been splitting his time between his home in London and talks with representatives of Sheikh Mansour in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Mansour has access to £17bn and has been following the Rangers story closely since fellow billionaire Craig Whyte got involved at Ibrox.

Mansour turned down approaches from Everton to take over at Manchester City in 2009 wiping out £305m of debt and transforming the club on and off the park with further plans for the stadium including a retractable roof, six star hotel and heliport for exclusive use by members of the millionaire club.

Wallace has likened the Sevco situation to that of Manchester City with Team Mansour wanting to end Celtic’s dominance in the same way as they have put Manchester United on the back-foot.

On the morning of the Sevco AGM Wallace announced that he was having a 120 day root and branch review of the troubled Ibrox finances with critics recently becoming concerned about the length of time it was taking to review the finances of a business with a £30m turnover.

One of Wallace’s first moves was to bring in football finance guru Philip Nash to replace finance director Brian Stockbridge with that appointment convincing Shake Mansour that the Ibrox side are serious about putting their house in order.

If all goes to plan at the end of the 120 day review Ally McCoist is likely to be given the £30m transfer warchest promised to him 15 months ago by Charles Green. Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller, Nacho Novo and David Weir have already been identified as priority signings.

McCoist has been involved in talks with Mansour with both men discovering a common interest in Bruce Springsteen although the Sheikh is strictly tee-total which provided an early barrier between the two men.

As part of the deal Sevco will have first pick on any surplus players at the Etihad Arena with Micah Richards and Edin Dzeko indicating that they are keen to join Ian Black and Lee McCulloch for stage three of The Journey next season.

News of the deal with Sheihk Mansour is likely to call a halt to any proposed boycott of season tickets with the Fans Umbrella Division being kept upto date with the Abu Dhabi developments.

The only stumbling block appears to be over fan representation on the board with Mansour keen to have one supporters body at the club and offering two blazers to represent rank and file supporters.

One of those blazers would have to be given to Paul Murray with the various supporter groups having to come together to agree the other representative.

It will take 10 years to move Trident: and during this time Scotland will spend the 100 of £billions saved on more relevant and important jobs.

Also we should be developing our west coast oil & gas fields, and our renewables industry. Don’t be so bleak as our children and their children have much to look forward to in an Independent Scotland. And its not the Bedroom tax or Food banks

Seen a couple of references to the ‘last’ indy ref in 1979.

There has never been an inde[y referendum in Scotland. The poll in 1979 was for devolution.

I don’t mind the political stuff on the blog. However, we should all strive to be respectful of others views.

I have come round to believing that a yes vote is the right thing to do, as without it we will remain politically impotent and live with a democratic deficit.

At the same time I distrust the SNP and do not support many of their post indy proposals. Shared currency, maintenance of the Royal family and continued membership of the EU and NATO.

Still. Vote yes and then we can get rid of Eck and Nicola and start the real changes.
