Players grounded in their community

963

It is quite incredible that the European Cup/Champions League final has not been held in Lisbon, one of Europe’s major football cities, since 25 May 1967.  Lisbon is the home of one of the early giants of the tournament, and has had imposing cathedral-stadiums ever since, all but one of which was brought up to modern standards for Euro 2004.

When the Lisbon Lions return to the city of their greatest triumph, one day before its 47th anniversary, they will once more represent Celtic on the world stage, just as they did in the Lisbon sun all those years ago, and on hundreds of occasions since, when they have pitched up at supporter or media events.

This is a team of The Ages.  The games’ dignitaries will pay homage to them next month, while locals of an older generation will recall their youth with a glint in their eyes.  Delighted their going back, hope they bring their boots.

We’re in for a treat in the run up to this year’s final.

Well done to the Celtic fans who rallied round to buy Johnny Doyle’s 1977 Cup Final shirt for his family.  Stunning work.

Is it unacceptable to say ‘Hearts are going bust’?  The only disputable element of this claim is its transient nature; Hearts are already bust.  I think it’s commendable that a Celtic player mixes socially and culturally with Hibs fans, who he previously performed for.  Remember and acknowledge those who helped you on the way up.

As for that Embramike bloke, watch him. He was on earlier talking about how his Morningside homestead and assorted outbuildings were positively festooned with flags – but he failed to mention whether they were saltires, tricolours or ‘flegs’ of an altogether more reactionary type!!!! ;-)))

Trying to stay neutral, but for transparency and accuracy sake (take note SFA / Sevco – delete as appropriate) …

    For Morningside read Corstorphine …

For homestead and assorted outbuildings read 3 bedroom double upper with garden hut …

For festooned with flags.. or “flegs” read yellow standard with a red angry liony thing plus a blue banner with a white crossy thing …

  15. I will be voting yes.

The labour party(bliar etc), being part of the thatcherite concensus(in political and economic terms) since 1979 is one reason why. They let down the ordinary people they were set up to represent. The latest example being the capping of welfare. The welfare state for the rich though goes from strength to strength(TAX) with further liberal tax policies entrenching the positions of those who have and those who do not.our society is imbalanced.I vote Yes to alter this

    How good were the Lions?

If you think of the goodest thing possible – then the Lions were better than that.

Naturally, we expected to win every game, but not in an arrogant way, which, even then was the prevailing attitude of the Govananters.

They wanted their team to destroy their opponents. My father described their attendance at a game, as a Roman Holiday, as in the uneven contest between lions (real ones) and Christians.

We were more interested in the performance of the team, which invariably secured the win.

A wee exercise I used to indulge in was to pick an individual player and study his performance. It was through this that I discovered what an important cog in the wheel was John Clark.

Over the course of a season, Big Jock used a very tight pool of players.

He never changed his defence, unless through injury or suspension, but he would rotate his forwards.

How he kept his team’s fitness levels up for season after season, was by only doing enough to win games.

If the match was one by half time, he would shut up shop, tools in the store and play out the second 45 at a comfortable level.

However, if there was still work to be done, then it was full steam ahead until the result was assured.

Another thing he rarely did was to make a tactical substitution, only one sub allowed, as it seemed that to so do would be admitting that he got his tactics wrong.

To think that Jock was thinking this way around 50 years ago, tells us how far ahead of the game he was.

Sorry for the indulgence, back to the local politics.

Can anyone imagine Artur Boruc going back home to Poland and joyfully support his boyhood heroes hanging from a fence singing with the fans and getting grief for it?
