Players have “no loyalty to the new club”

285

The notion that Newco is the same as Oldco took a bit of a battering yesterday from two employees of Rangers Football Club PLC, Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker.

Naismith said, “I am extremely proud of the actions we took but I am disappointed and angry that Rangers Football Club no longer exists in its original form.”

“My loyalty is with Rangers, not with Sevco, who I don’t know anything about.

Whittaker got straight to the point, “We owe no loyalty to the new club. There is no history there for us.”

“No longer exists”, “no loyalty to the new club”, “no history there for us”.  Ouch.

Sevco chief, Charles Green responded by confirming he had received guidance from the Scottish FA on the transfer of player-employees from one club to a successor club/company.  Curiously he didn’t suggest the SFA backed his position that he was entitled to force players to become employees of Sevco, instead confirming only that there was an appeal route open to him:

“The Scottish FA has been considering the issue and has issued a preliminary guidance note on registration issues. That note has made it clear that it is open to the club to challenge the actions of the players.”

Perhaps emboldened by his precedent-making Court of Session challenge to the SFA which passed without censure from the Association, Green threatened to do so again:

“We have no wish to go to court on these matters but the players involved, their agents and clubs who may be pursuing these players should be in no doubt that we will do whatever it takes to protect the club’s interests.”

This is what happens when the SFA declines to pursue a club for raising actions in the civil courts.

Isn’t it interesting that both Naismith and Whittaker went to great lengths to make the distinction between oldco huns with history and newco huns with none.

    Good Afternoon.

So– where are we now with the dishevelled mess that passes for Scottish Football?

In the course of the last couple of weeks we have seen fan power take a grip with the reult that a number of clubs have now openly come out and said publicly that they will vote “NO” to a newco in the Scottish Premier Leaugue. We have seen footballers, who were previously registered with the football authorities through Rangers PLC, make public pronouncements that they will not work with the self styled Rangers New Co- whether that be Sevco 5088 Ltd or Sevco Scotland Ltd or whoever– and instead they are away to ply their trade elsewhere.

This leaves the newco applying for a position in the league without being able to say who its players are going to be– if it were ever to get permission to filed a team.

However, what amazes me in this mess is the extent of the contortions which the Scottish Football Authorities will perform in order to “soften the blow” of there being no Rangers FC in the top flight of Scottish Football.

We hear of secret meetings, proposed league merger, league reconstruction, the reappearance of the Glasgow Cup, the shoehorn into division 1 of the SFL for Newco and so on– all the while seemingly ignoring the reconvening of the Carloway Tribunal which might just knock any such plans into a cocked hat. Further, the secret meeting of the blazers who seek to organise things going forward, convene and discuss in the absence of the FTT decision. This is a decision which might have a huge impact on how Rangers FC ( as was ) should be viewed by Scottish Football– both retrospectively and in the future. Surely, any reasonable attempt at reconstruction in this climate should only take place after you are in possession of all the facts in relation to one of the dominating forces you seek to organise any such reconstruction around?

There can be no argument against the notion that the demise of Rangers FC has brought this flurry of activity, so why reorganise and rewrite the rule book now before you are in possession of all of the facts and consequences surrounding the errant club? If the same fate had befallen any other club there would be no such haste, and no such sense of arm twisting and back room bargaining. Further, I can think of no other organisation or series of organisations who would effectively dance and contort so much as a result of the actions of one rogue member, whose corporeal corpse is allowed to continue to cause mayhem and strife amongst the majority of members and delegates.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, rewriting the rule book, and overturning the existing law, the powers that be should have leaders who deal swiftly and summarily with the errant party, put the house in order and once that is done they can then proceed to reorganise from there. That is the proper order of things– not this “we’re all scared of the big bad wolfe” approach where you make up a nice bed for the wolf so that it doesn’t come into your house!

These so called secret meetings and the lack of leadership make me think of another set of secret meetings which took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey in May 1929. This meeting was seen as the first recorded meeting of the key figures of Organised Crime in eastern America and it involved the the Mafia Bosses of New York and elsewhere. This convention included the members of the “Big Seven Group” and the top crime leaders from across the nation. This was the first true underworld meeting and the biggest step in forming a National Crime Syndicate that would control criminal operations, dictate policy, enforce rules, and maintain authority in the national underworld.

According to writers on organized crime, the Syndicate was founded or established at that May 1929 conference in Atlantic City, and in attendance were leading underworld figures from throughout the United States, including Lucky Luciano, Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Johnny “The Fox” Torrio, Frank Costello, Joe Adonis, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, Dutch Schultz, Abner “Longy” Zwillman, Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, Vince Mangano, gambler Frank Erickson, Frank Scalice and Albert “Mad Hatter” Anastasia. Others describe the Atlantic City meeting as a coordination and strategy conference for bootleggers.

For our purposes, I want to focus on three characters at this meeting. Johhny Torrio, Al Capone, and Frank Costello.

Capone had gone to Chicago from his native New York to work for Torrio, but in 1925 Torrio was badly injured in an attack organised by a mob known as the North Side Gang, and as a result he left for Italy to convalesce and in so doing he handed his business over to the garrulous and big headed Capone. Everyone knows Capone was ruthless and barely hid his criminal activity, making him a feared bully– feared by other members of the mob, the public and even the Police. Capone delighted in shocking violence, as was evidenced by the St Valantine’s day massacre of 7 of the aforesaid noth side gang which took place on 14th February 1929.

By that date, Capone was already attracting “heat” from Elliot Ness and his “untouchables” who were looking into Capones failure to pay tax and more importantly his participation in what was perceived as nationwide organised rum running and bootlegging– effectively breaches of the Volstead Act.

Costello was a different kettle of fish altogether. No doubt he was a Mafia man and that his hands were not altogether clean, but for years Costello had argued against violence and the publicity it brought. He himself did not carry a gun, and argued that the public violence of Capone and others did nothing but create divisions, brought Government investigations and indictments and in general was just plain bad business.

There were turf wars in New York too, but Costello preached that legitimate business and “clever crime” was the way forward– slot machines, gambling, bootlegging and eventually property in Las Vegas and so on. Further he championed the placing of politicians in Tammany Hall to run New York in a way that suited the Mafia’s new style business plan.

Like all Mafia Men, Costello would gain a knickname over the years, though his was slightly unusual……The Prime Minister.

So what is the significance of these three men, this meeting and this organisation in relation to today’s cabal in the football world.

    Well it is this:

The story goes that the Atlantic City conference had a number of items on the Agenda including how they would organise in the future, who would have what territory or division, who would contribute to the common fund and so on.

However, one of the items alledgedly on the agenda was what was perceived as “The Chicago Problem”– namely the adverse publicity attracted by the errant Capone, and in particular his investigation by those who wanted to look into bootlegging etc outwith Chicago. THAT could not be allowed, because it wouldn’t just affect Capone but everyone else.

And so it is reported, that at the meeting in Atlantic City in May 1931, in front of all the other bosses, Frank Costello told Al Capone ” You’re going to jail Al– for tax evasion! For everyone’s sake this is the best thing to do.”– of course there was the added hint that if Capone didn’t like this news he would sleep with the fishes so to speak.

Now there is no way of knowing if this story is true, except that on October 17th 1931 Capone was sentenced to 11 years in jail for tax evasion, with all the charges in connection with the Volstead Act being dropped. Capone had tried to bribe jurors, Policemen and all sorts to escape justice, but the extreme violence had apparently ceased—- for some reason.

The rum running– it wasn’t just rum of course– scotch Whiskey, Irish Whiskey and everything else– continued in a more organised and low key fashion— with the resultant profit.

    The Moral of this story?

Is that in matters of legislation and policy you need a strong leader, a firm guy who should not be afraid to recognise a bully who is not acting in the communal interest and tell him “you’re going to jail Al.” Deal with the perpetrator, and then reorganise, instead of reorganising to deal with the perpetrator.

The Scottish Football Authorities have to “deal” with the transgressions that have brought so much “heat” on them and the game in general– that is the only way– perhaps– the “Chicago” way— to go forward.

In the early ’50’s, Frank Costello was the star witness at the hearings conducted by Senator Erneste Kefauver into organised crime. His performance was televised, though only his hands were shown, but his rasping voice was heard– it is said that much of Costello including that rasping voice would be the influence for Don Corleone in the Godfather. The nation was transfixed as the man described as America’s No1 Gangster was questioned.

Unlike everyone else who testified at the hearings Costello refused to answer each question by citing the fifth amndment. His rasping voice answered questions and allegations, including the suggestion that by that time that not a single jusge could be appointed in New York without his prior approval! In response to all questions he prevaricated, skirted around the truth, dodged, ducked, and generally didn’t actually say too much of substance– but he never plead the fifth.

Except there was one sole question that he answered directly and without hesitation, with the result that his answer produced great laughter and brought the proceedings to a temporary halt. The question and answer?

“Tell me, What have you done for your country, Mr Costello?”

    ” I paid my taxes!”.

From a bootlegger there is a lesson in there somewhere for someone!

  13. sparkleghirl @ 12.29 – I can’t help thinking D&P have made a right royal mess of this. Maybe it’s with the benefit of hindsight, but I’d guess that even a layman could have navigated a clearer path through administration and put together a better CVA offer.

    Consider this alternative universe –

14 Feb – D&P sell a major player to the russian league in February, eg McGregor/Davis for 5m. This provides funds to keep the club going until summer, and avoids reducing player asset values through wage cut deals.

1 June – When the transfer window re-opens sell Edu, McGregor/Davis, Lafferty, Naismith, Whittaker, Goian, generating around 20m for the creditors pot. Consider selling Ibrox and Murray Park and entering into a lease-back deal, with an option to re-purchase the assets in 5 years time when rangers are financially secure. This could put an extra 10-20m in the creditors pot. Total 30-40m.

July – Put a serious offer to creditors, around 30p in the pound.

Aug – Rebuild slowly, play young players etc, maintain your place in SPL and re-grow over a 5 year period. Exercise re-purchase option on Ibrox.

  19. Association Branches vote for selective Boycott.

Yesterday’s Emergency Meeting of the Celtic Supporters Association voted overwhelmingly in favour of a selective boycott of any club which votes for a Newco club to be admitted directly into the SPL.

I want to make it very clear that this decision is a nuclear option for us, most of the people present have been following Celtic all of their lives, so a boycott is not something which we take lightly.

The ideal solution for us would be a 12-0 vote against a Newco; I know that would mean Oldco voting against themselves, but with what has been happening up until now I wouldn’t rule that out, farce just doesn’t cover it.

It looks more likely that one or maybe two clubs will vote for a Newco, well they will leave us with no alternative but to boycott them in the coming season, and we hope that that decision will be supported by the majority of Celtic supporters.

The meeting yesterday was conducted in the proper fashion; everyone present had the opportunity to voice their opinion, as I have already said, the decision was very important, and needed to be debated at length.

Our decision already has the 100% support of The Celtic Trust, The Green Brigade, and the North American Federation of Celtic Supporters Clubs; I will be contacting The Affiliation of Registered Celtic Supporters Clubs and The Association of Irish Celtic Supporters Clubs sometime today.

We will also look to gain the support of independent Celtic supporters, who don’t belong to any of the main groups, their support is imperative to any boycott being successful, we will look into how that process can be best achieved.

I want to stress here that the action we are taking is not being done in a vengeful manner; we sincerely hope that there is no need to have the boycott because of the Newco situation; we hope that chairmen and CEO’s see that sporting integrity must take precedence over commercial interests.>>

We also had a discussion yesterday on the possible move to change the voting system with regard to financial affairs in the SPL. The Association will not sit back and watch our club be weakened because of the demise of another club.

If there is to be change, then it needs to done in a normal business manner, we as Celtic supporters already contribute more the any other set of supporters, we probably take more supporters to one away match than the total number of visiting supporters to Celtic park in a whole season.

We sincerely hope that this situation will be resolved amicably on July 4th, I would implore all the supporters to get behind your team, we must all look to come out of this whole sorry mess stronger than we went into it.
