Players will return like walking petri dishes

222

News that our Scottish football’s star player tested positive for Covid a day after travelling to meet the France Under-23 squad, is an indication of what we are in for.  Odsonne Edouard and pretty much all other professional footballers are from a demographic that is immune to the worst excesses of the disease, but it will continue to infect players for the remainder of the season.  Celtic, and all clubs, will be required to utilise their squads like never before.

Beyond our worry for Odsonne’s health, the next concern is for the rest of the squad.  Odsonne played for Celtic on Sunday and tested positive in France on Tuesday.  The club will have a nervous few days ahead while the incubation period of a possible transmission on Sunday expires.

It is more likely the player contracted the disease while travelling.  If so, the short-term consequences for Celtic are less, but this indicates the risks we can expect when players mix with the public on commercial flights.  When Celtic or any national team travels, they do so on private charters, within their own ‘bubble’.  But players who live abroad need to use public transport to get back home.

From Azerbaijan to Iceland, ‘European’ players will cross-fertilise with fellow travellers and each other.  When they return to their clubs at the end of next week, most having attended three fixtures, they will be walking petri dishes.  Some will have picked up colds and flus, then isolate, due to these symptoms, but Odsonne will not be the last positive test.

These international fixtures are like a big mumps party, seeding populations with a deadly cargo through largely asymptomatic agents.  Not your best work, Uefa.

A reminder to us all, wash your hands, don’t touch your face, keep your distance, wear a mask.  It does not matter what age you are, you don’t want this disease.

  1. That McGinn story, common knowledge around Dumbarton & Cydebank youth football circles that John’s family adsvised against Celtic youth, and actually did so for all the boys, as it was considered they would have a better chance of breaking through elsewhere without the baggage of “only here cos of yir granda”.

  2. Celtics primary responsibility is to its shareholders, sponsors and fans. Its too risky to send players around the globe during covid and without doubt affects our ability to field our strongest team and perhaps risking the entire football club.

We pay season tickets to see the team play , sponsors invest and shareholders invest – international football increases the risk of players catching covid SIGNIFICANTLY , therefore Celtic should pull players out.

what a mess and much more to come

14 Celtic players on international duty.

Haven’t played a game yet. 2 players down.

Anybody wanna run a book on what the number will be returning positive?

Feckin step up here Celtic and make a bloody point.

as with previous posts, I want to know how the SFA got to allow all our 14 players to be in the same room including our scots , our non-scots, and every ex player.

is it Brigton Health centre that is doing the track and trace ?

  4. I also want to know why Christopher Blanchet gets more gigs on the weather bulletin than anyone else,

down with this sort of thing

  5. Celtic should throw hat in the ring for Wilshire – experience, something to prove, fits our profile (if he passes medical) – would be a psychological blow give rangers links. Forrest out for a couple of months is the driver

  6. Saint Stivs I believe that Kevin Gallacher hinted that was the same reason he never came tae us. I remember Benny Rooney would also get dogs abuse for only being there because of his da. I was away when Paul Chalmers played for us so no idea if it was the same for him.

  7. FOLLOWING today’s news regarding Ryan Christie, he has reiterated his adherence to all relevant protocols while on International duty.

In light of this, Celtic confirmed today that it aims to open dialogue with the Scottish Government and other authorities to fully understand the self-isolation procedures for those players who continue to deliver negative test results, as Ryan has.

Ryan said: “I am so disappointed by the events of today and the potential effects this could have on my country and club. As I have operated within these protocols for such a long time now, I am well aware of all the rules and social distancing from team mates has become the norm and something I have observed.

“The situation is very frustrating, particularly as I don’t believe I have done anything wrong.”

  9. my favourite caller on clyde, frank just slapped down Andy andy andy halliday.

    comedy gold.

  10. Celtic & Arsenal, Clubs and Players, saying the same thing, I think they may have had a wee talk with each other before their relative statements, por cierto.

  11. Frank on clyde,

Andy is I could ask you regarding the upcoming old firm game, och look at me using a term I never use, i didnt mean old firm i meant to say Glasgow derby, becasue the last old firm game was in 2012, and there cant be another one, cos rangers died

hahahhahaha, they cut him off 2 minutes later

  12. I think Andy Halliday slapped frank down – have celtic played Aberdeen, Rangers, Hibs and Livingtone away from home, the answer is now. Celtic have been struggling but not yet had a real test. I think its a fair point.

Celtic bringing in players late in the window has contributed to our lack of momentum. Lennon has done a great job getting results, sooner or later we will need form – it better happen soon or rangers will pull away.

they don’t look like losing and the refs are doing everything they can to help

I’m not sure what Charlie Nicholas is sitting there thinking… but to keep hold of all his best players and bring in another left sider represents a really good transfer window…

I love when he qualifies things,

Celtic, my club, the 9 in a row going for 10 champions,

I wish Terry O’Neill and the Glasgow faker could get back on,

I heard Trumps advisors told him they cant use the phone in as it is more fake news than his.

    Some other stats from

    @ScottBrown8

    vs St J

✅ 86% of passes went forwaed

✅ Successful pass into final third every 2.5 minutes. Next best was McGregor every 5.5 minutes

✅ As many passes into final third as Ntcham who stated and more than Christie/Moi/Turnbull

  19. maybe the greatest port contribution in a celtic shirt

nb – I consider the gibby and east end of greenock as port yins cos they went to school in the port, so Stevie Fulton and the original McMaster (a real celtic legend) , there is somebody else i am forgetting .

How come, when you go to a linked article about any subject, and you then click-through on one of the comments that is from anyone you think is obviously of a ‘blue’ persuasion (e.g., ‘blue’, ‘loyal’,’union’, or similar in their name – or a wee butcher’s apron on their icon) that the comments from them and their pals/followers on their own facebook / twitter etc., pages are all full of the most base sweary words!?!?!

Much more so than for any other demographic – I suspect globally.

It is quite depressing to see how their upbringing has shaped them.

All started out as fresh, wee, innocent baby lambs, and end up as foul-mouthed, slavering beasts.

    I blame the parents.

  21. If OE has tested positive should the whole Celtic squad not be in self isolation for the next 14 days?

    ————-

Suspect main danger is OE related – did he have the virus – and was he shedding – while mixing with the team on Sunday. A fair chance he was. Need to see if other players test positive (including those NOT on international duty)

That hasn’t happened yet, so we are OK at the moment. Next 3-5 days is danger period.

And like you – I’m not happy – especially having our footballing fate to an extent in the hands of the SFA. Dangerous.
