Playing against Celtic, Fit and Proper moment ahead, crystal balls

1108

The second half last night will be remember for the fact that right back Mikael Lustig came within the width of the crossbar of scoring a hat-trick, while left back Emilio Izaguirre also hit the crossbar – and was caught offside in the centre forward position.  The movement and energy levels required for this type of performance cannot be overestimated.

Adam Matthews’ goal on Saturday, when he burst a lung to cover half the field and get on the end of a move as it developed on the opposite wing, is another example of how physically taxing playing for Celtic is right now.  And just as importantly, how taxing it is to play against them.

Motherwell competed as best they could before hitting the wall and capitulating.

Kano

I knew the minutes’ applause for Kano was coming last night, but it was a hard moment nonetheless. Sannabhoy read a letter at halftime from Martin’s wife, Carolyn, explaining the family’s appreciation for what the Celtic family did for them.

It’s appropriate for us to return our respect to Kano’s family, and to Sannabhoy and his Kano Foundation colleagues. They got the charity work ball rolling for so many of us. They gave us the opportunity to aspire to become better people.

There’s a link at the bottom of the article to sign-up for CQN11, where the work to build another school kitchen in Malawi goes on. You are part of an incredible community. Be there.

Just a brief note on Honest Dave King’s recent claims.  He will become a director of newco Rangers in the event the forthcoming EGM votes him so.  I’ve no doubt he will be able to find a NomAd to work with him, not all have the same standards, allowing the company to retain its listed status with him as a director.

It is also true that the SFA cannot stop him becoming a director.  They do not have a Fit and Proper test, they have fit and proper criteria, which directorial appointments are measured against after they are appointed.

Despite all we’ve seen in come out of Hampden over the last few years, I would be amazed if the SFA board approved a tax convict and former director of a club which broke tax law, player registration rules and went into liquidation.  It’s not even a remotely tenable suggestion.

After the event, the SFA would be in a position to penalise newco Rangers – most probably through a fine – and instruct them to dismiss King.  King, of course, has all the humility and self-awareness required to apologise and resign without a fuss.  There’s no way he would use his well-marshalled media campaign to try what Craig Whyte and Charles Green did before him – play to the gallery, blame all his ills on an ‘anti-Rangers’ conspiracy.

Note how the media campaign is rolling out King comment and press releases as definitive news, not subjective claims.  Note also that Easdale press releases are being covered by the media, but that pantomime-hate figure, Jack Irvine, is being attributed as the source.

Note that Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias are saying nothing.  They’re just going about their business.  You don’t need crystal balls to see how this one is going to end.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is on Friday 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park. The focus of an excellent night’s entertainment will be funding the construction of a kitchen at Chibwata Primary School in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

  1. Hoping last nights performance was not a flash in the pan, we’ve had a few performances like that this season and followed them up with very average performances.

  3. Honest Dave’s tax travails have produced numerous court decisions in South Africa. The SFA cannot ignore them. Why, even in 2013, he was reluctant to enhance his ‘fit and proper’ credentials –

    Murray NO v King (5984/2013) [2013] ZAGPPHC 68 (22 February 2013)

“I can come to no other conclusion but that contempt of court has been proved. The respondent did not advance any evidence to show that he was not wilful and mala fides. All the evidence show that the respondent is obstructing the court order wilfully and has no intention to comply with the order. Therefore I find the respondent in contempt of court.”

An article from yesteryear about the SFA allowing Sky into our homes.

I think the SFA should ban broadcasts from foreign leagues (EPL included) for the good of our game. No live football except CL final, scottish games, and international tournaments.

We are kidding ourselves on here that it isn’t killing us.

Draw the lines into the future – the next generation (who don’t have parents taking them) will be as likely to support man utd than celtic. When Sky see this tipping point, they won’t even bother broadcasting SPL. There will be no TV money, relatively tiny attendances, all contributing to a vicious circle which will kill our game virtually stone dead. I’d say within 10 years.

We either stop Sky or form an Atlantic League. The status quo will kill us. I am cancelling my sky footy today.

Well done Ronnie and the bhoy’s last night – superb.

    Bat know @ 12:37

While having little knowledge of current attendances I looked at SPL attendances when Rangers went bust as a response to an SMSM article on the drastic drop on SPL attendance the following season – from the top of my head this is what I found.

The stated overall attendance in the SPL season 2012/13 had significantly reduced from the previous season.

Main reason for this Rangers’ home attendance record out of the equation.

As for other Clubs it was mixed Kilmarnock seemed to suffer a lowering attendance, as they have a large capacity and relatively low home support, so the large away support of the of the bears made a difference.

Now the likes of Dundee United gained, they had a chance of being more competitive and although they lost the travelling bears support, they gained through the reunion with Dundee in the derby.

So as the home team have the gate receipts the only real losers were Rangers who were dead anyway.

Since then all sorts have happened, including a new Club in the lower league with record breaking attendances:-) Hibs, Hearts being demoted etc etc……. So overall attendance tells little.

So the point is each Club has to look at their own home attendance, look at it’s running costs and run the Club accordingly, trying to make their team as competitive as possible, which happens much more now than in 2012 – Dundee United again being a good example.

What Mark Guidi and his ilk cannot argue with is that Scottish Football Clubs are better run, that Scottish Football is more competitive – Clubs like Hibs and Hearts even out of the top League seem rejuvenated.

The predicted Armageddon didn’t happen, it was never going to.

BTW The various Clubs that play out of Ibrox are exceptions to this uplift of well being in Scottish Football, however I see them as an outliers.

    ——————————————————————————

Cheers dude. Agree with what you say re: clubs being run on a more realistic basis and the fact that there is competition is evidence that Scottish ffotball is in a better state than it was previously. Guess this goes back to the point made by other posters earlier. Guidi’s argument seems specious.

Paul – if King would just do what Ashley does, put his man in situ and control from behind the scenes, he’d have no problems with the SFA. I assume his ego just won’t allow such an obvious strategy. He needs to be seen and lauded as THE MAN of THE People.

    ——————————————————————————————————————

    Spot on.

King will spout any populist crap to get a few column inches – that’s what makes him tick.

While huns past and present go down the pan, all he can bang on about is stopping Celtic doing 10 in a row.

EGOTISTICAL BIGOTED CROOKED POPULIST BUFFOON – a “real rangers man” if ever there was one.

  7. Paul , thanks for that . Mandy Kane and rest of the family have seen the applause and h/t – they are grateful and humbled by the support shown for the family from all around the world.

Second placed team. Although we are 4% worse off it is the improvement in Anerdeen evidenced by their 9 game unbeaten run that is making up the gap.

Despite what the poorly informed lazy journalists and a former Celtic player would have you believe Celtic are only 4% worse than average. This improves every time Ronny wins a game.

  17. The last time I saw Kano he was freezing in his chair at the Perth Glory v Celtic match. I recall the last time I saw him standing was in Rosie O’Grady’s, Perth. I left him at 2.00am with his dad and Ramie, all with a beer in their hands and laughing like only the Scots (and the Irish) can.

I know how I’ll remember Kano and there are no clocks in heaven.

    Kano knows no pain now.

CQN did a lot for Kano and his family, but still, with that in mind, would it be selfish and/or inappropriate that the next Mary’s Meals school kitchen in Malawi be named after Kano?

Annoyed at Labours attitude towards, Trident, poverty and the very little difference between them and Tories. I will never vote for them again, despite having a very good Labour MP, in Katy Clark. My vote will be going to The SNP.

On Trident, the Scottish public are confused – a majority back getting rid of it (as do many within the Labour and even Conservative parties), but there is also a majority in favour of the UK having nuclear weapons (?!?). Any UK government that abandons Trident will come under heavy pressure from the USA to commit more armed service personnel to overseas conflicts (and the unpopularity that entails) and you can see why it’s easy for the SNP to play this card – they don’t have the ultimate responsibility.

On poverty, I’m sorry you feel that way, but the fact remains that child and pensioner poverty fell faster under the last Labour government than at any other time in post-war history.

You end by saying you have a good Labour MP who you intend to throw out at the next election. I am not a Labour party member, but I hope you reconsider, and vote for whichever candidate on their own merits. History has shown that when mediocre politicians are elected on the back of a wave of popular enthusiasm for one particular party, the end result is not a happy one.

Surprised to receive a letter from Celtic offering me a ticket for the fixture. Must be struggling to sell their allocation and sending out to ST holders.

As I’m on record as saying I wouldn’t accept a ticket if it were free with full corporate hospitality for a game involving Sevco, I will not be taking up the option and will be feeding back the reasons why, including the non-existent opponent.

It’s a pity that the allocation will be taken up – a partly deserted Celtic end would send a powerful message.

Again, may I reiterate my concern about the safety of those attending. The issues surrounding this damned fixture could become even more incendiary over the next 10 days.
