Plucky green and gold tribute act

820

Last night when Neil Lennon told BBC Radio Scotland that Norwich’s second offer for Gary Hooper was “not as high as £6m” and that despite reports, the club had not tabled a fresh contract offer to the player, you would be forgiven for thinking the entire transfer saga was a product of fantasy.

Neil also confirmed Gary’s contract offer from Celtic is due to expire on 1 February, when I understand the player’s current representation deal also expires.

None of this counts where it really matters.  Gary continues to perform like a player on top of this game.  St Mirren next, then he can start the countdown to Juventus.  Put the Italians in their place and he will attract attention from more than a plucky green and gold tribute act.

A corner of Glasgow stood still today to bid farewell to Sean Fallon.  Sean’s 19 grandchildren delivered touching bidding prayers while son Sean recounted many of the times and habits which shaped his father’s life.  It was a fitting tribute to such a great life, marked by sincere and loving words from Sir Alex Ferguson.

    Blatter mourns Fallon passing

    (FIFA.com) Wednesday 23 January 2013

Celtic mourned one of its most iconic all-time representatives last week. That’s when Sean Fallon, who spent eight years wearing the green and white hoops, was assistant manager to the great Jock Stein during the 1960s and ‘70s, and served the club in other capacities, passed away at the age of 90.

In a letter to Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has expressed his sympathy over the loss of the likeable Fallon.

He wrote: In addition to a successful career as a player for Celtic, Mr Fallon will also be remembered for his great technical knowledge as assistant manager of Celtic during the Jock Stein era, fulfilling a role that is of such vital importance to the game, namely identifying and nurturing young talent. Youth development work such as that carried out by Mr Fallon to such good effect continues to be important to this day, and he will have been pleased to note the emergence of several young talents in recent years, who have most certainly played their part in Celtic’s recent success, most notably in the Champions League.”

“On behalf of the members of the international football family, I should be extremely grateful if you could extend our deepest condolences to Mr Fallon’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Sounds like Delia Smith’s been hammering the bevvy and making crank calls. The offers for Hooper are laughable.

  4. Methinks another blog meltdown is imminent.

Either that, or there was a sudden shift in the space/time continuum and nobody told me…..

  7. I have not always been as big a fan of Gary Hooper as many on here but last night was the best I have seen him. He seems to have gained tremendous speed and some of his passing was top drawer.

Conversely, I was a fan of Sammi when others were booing his every touch. Now, having gained the confidence I felt was all he needed to become superb, I find myself being more annoyed by him!

He seems to have adopted some of the Skippy/Stokes attitude that it is always someone else`s fault. I don`t like it.

To finish on a positive note. Our last 180 minutes have been as accomplished as I have seen from Celtic for some time…..especially last night`s against a sharp, attacking Dundee United. Also, 42,000 was an excellent crowd on a night when the weather in many parts would have caused travelling fans to have second thoughts.

Incidentally, KevJungle regulary refers to 25/30 thousand empty seats. Have we had ANY SPL games where the crowd was below 40,000?

  9. A couple of interesting facts I learned today.

Hooper only cost £1.6 Million and the agreement with his current agents expires at the end of the month.

It seems someone is desperately trying to get a cut of a transfer fee while they still can…

  11. McGeady on loan to Wigan appears to be in the press today.

It would be nice to see what Aiden can do in the EPL.

The more players that have came through our system and play down there the more money we will get for our players if clubs want to sign our players.

I don’t want anyone to leave Celtic who is playing well for us but if they do I want top dollar for them.

So Norwich’s “upped” offer for our last 16CL, international class striker was less than 6m ?

A belter of an article from a Spurs website…..

We had all been told that Tottenham were looking at Gary Hooper of Celtic and although I had heard it all before things had seemed to be falling into place (rumour wise).

However surprise surprise the only person seen at Parkhead was Sir Alex Ferguson! Now whether he was actually there to run the rule over someone (as expected) or maybe he was invited …..who knows.

The simple thing is this, AVB according to the reports was taking a look at Hooper himself, the Daily Mail have pictures of Ferguson there and nothing of anyone from Tottenham (no one from Tottenham was even mentioned in the article!).

So I think I may have been right to avoid putting that story out there in the first place and wrong to thinking that the dots were connecting.

In all honesty I know that some people regard Hooper quite highly, but to me the Scottish league has lost its competitive edge after Rangers were kicked out of the league, so as to whether Hooper would fare well in the Premier League I am not so sure.

Whether he was let go as a school boy or not from Tottenham I am very unsure if he had the quality then or now. If they gave him to us on a loan I would take it, but to buy now and in excess of £10million…. I still have too many questions.

Finally ask yourself this, if he is that good a striker why didn’t Newcastle try to buy him when they were desperate for a striker? I think it’s another typical paper story on our interest in Hooper and his agent doing well to get his contract demands accepted!

…so there you have it guys, Spurs will take him back if we send him there on loan!

  15. I like hooper better player now than when we signed him great movement and a class finisher now is the time for celtic to ask him what he wants in his contract for him to stay and if we can’t give him it then sell him and lets move on and play players who want to play for celtic and a would let him know it’s all down hill for him if he leaves because norwich city are going no where fast. Celtic big than ANY player. HH

Lopez has played for Lyon in the EL but i don’t think that rules him out of playing for Juventus in the CL.

I would be surprised if Juve were bringing in a striker that wouldn’t be eligible for the games against us.

    Hooper for Spurs ?

the price will obviously be based on the money they were willing to pay for previous SPL signings and we know the difference in quality will reflect in that eh, Hooper nothing less than £15M

    £9M for a donkey, then surely a min of £15M for a thoroughbread ?

  18. tomtheleedstim on

ASonOfDan- that offer is a few months old – perhaps the new one kicks in on Feb 1st when he ditches his current agent with the agreement of Hooper.

Celtic seem very relaxed and Hooper is playing very well at the moment. Just a thought.

  19. What is coming through in some posts is the necessity to fully examine, the sometime pernicious influence of agents and other parties likely to gain from transfer fees.
