Police Scotland and the SFA in the dock

498

Former Newco Rangers director, Imran Ahmad, made a few headlines yesterday, the most disturbing of which was: “I firmly believe Police Scotland have their own agenda and are deeply emotionally connected to Rangers Football Club. In my view Police Scotland have a clear conflict of interest.”

That’s an extraordinary claim but I’m not sure it’s supported by extraordinary evidence. There is certainly evidence that Police Scotland investigate and arrest supporters of the club at football games, where prosecution levels are comparatively high. There is not extraordinary evidence to support the claim, but perhaps that’s the point.

The police go after fans, but how does it shake down when it comes to corporate matters? Set aside issues of corporate responsibility from the early 70s, and there are no concerns of criminal activity at Ibrox until the spectre of malfeasance of recent years.

By speaking publicly yesterday Ahmad is now engaged in a PR campaign. He’s marked Police Scotland’s card. This may be the rantings of a fantasist, but we should recognise that Ahmad has been an insider at Ibrox, where he would have had the opportunity to deal with senior Police Scotland officers on a regular basis. Superficial friendships would have been struck. Ahmad would need little in the way of private support when a director of Newco to substantiate his claims.

The headline grabber from Ahmad, “What the rest of the world will never understand unless they experience it first hand is that Rangers Football Club is a religion, in itself, built on centuries of religious bigotry” is also a curious think to say.

To be fair to Newco, they can bat away accusations of religious bigotry easily. Employment criteria for them has never been questioned, but Ahmad’s stuck his neck out on an issue which I’m 100% sure he wasn’t asked about. What chance he’s made notes during his time at Ibrox of any inappropriate police behaviour, or matters which allude to religious bigotry?

Mr Ahmad is asking Crown prosecutors for a letter of safe passage. I reckon he stands a decent chance of getting one.  Now.

No matter whether they are innocent or guilty, the SFA have been landed in a very awkward situation by Ajax, who told Uefa the Association made it clear they saw no ground for action against fans chanting “Fenian b…….”

It’s inconceivable that Ajax have an email to that effect.  If they do, it will come out, and Operation Deny and Deflect will swing underway again, but these comments would surely never be committed to record, if at all.

Ajax are also in a hole.  They have made a claim and will be asked who at the SFA made the comment.  You can put your mortgage on the fact Celtic officials will ask this week.

Prejudice at the police and the SFA.  It’s been a difficult week for conspirators.

  1. I think Aberdeen players know they are not good enough to just throw their jerseys on the park and that’s why I think they will be a threat.

I think our player so time suffer from over confidence too often.

  2. Funny article Paul, keep poking them, their already purple coupons must be fit to burst.

Can’t wait for us to go on a run of wins again- and we will. Let’s see then who disappears of the blog this time. :-)

Jozo to come in on Thursday and solidify the back four with some old fashioned heiders intae row Z.

  3. As for them beating Hamilton, I hope they win and keep the pressure on, the only team I want to see beating them is us or to put it another way, I couldn’t give a monkeys about their results except against us.

You may well be right but they dont have to much to be confident about at the moment. If anyone of them read CQN they will understand the support are not to happy with them at present. They need to roll up there sleeves and get stuck in the support realise we will lose games but it is the manner of the loses that are a concern we seem to lack any dig. 7. One scan of the sevco5088 Newsnow site reveals all you need to know about the mentality and attitudes over on the southside: not one single article in their blogs, or media that hints at negativity.

Now compare a few examples of the language from the media to Celtic: “dilemma”, “stupid mistake”, “fuss”, “offensive song”. And today is a day better than most, given Leigh’s player award, I’ve been tracking this for some time. The comparisons in the verbiage on some days is quite astounding.

  8. JFH,

I didn’t want to go into it but when a young bhoy is attacked by a fav and the victim is shipped out it doesn’t exactly instil team spirit or exemplify fair treatment.

Naturally, using their words with extreme care, could any of our posters, Irish or otherwise, enlighten me on the following.

Last week, allegedly on the grounds that a NI Catholic had been murdered by some faction of the IRA, Peter Robinson’s DUP walked out of the NI Power Sharing Assembly.

Can anyone shed light on which particular financial scandal the above action was used as a smokescreen to divert attention from?

It is not its level of excitement but the level of its consequences, that should have ensured his remarks were published in full.

Auldheid i get the point about different perceptions but i think you are using it to justify the unjustifiable.

I think that might be the Nama scandal to which you refer. Shady property deals, funds shipped offshore, talk of Peter robinson’s son being involved, and trousering millions of pounds of money at the expense of the public purse, surely not!

Which reminds me, why did Peter Robinson refuse to go for his eye test? Because he didn’t like it last time someone poked his Iris! :)

CANALAMAR. As I said I was not aware of that what team did he go to ? Obviously I only know what I have read on CQN and that has not been much however,I like young Tierney I thought he might get a few more first team games this season. As a supporter I have to trust the management but it sounds as though the ship has been blown of course. H.H.

  15. Given the legal issues surrounding the latest incarnation of The Damned, Ahmed’s remarks about Police Scotland are dynamite.

On first reading he is saying a lot of polis are Sevco fans.

On a closer reading it looks, to me, to be a warning to the authorities that he is aware of dodgy ties between Plod and Sevco, during the time Green & Whyte were at work.

Can you imagine if this story had occurred in England? Would it have been so casually dismissed by their press? By their football authorities?

As for posters saying this isn’t the kind of thing Paul should be writing about – open your eyes and look at the big picture. This is EXACTLY what Paul should be highlighting.! It goes to the heart of a corruption which has scarred our game and continues to scar our nation. And we are its ultimate victims.

Team mates fighting? I remember tosh McKinlay giving henrik Larsson a black eye in 1997 in training in the week leading up to a game v the Huns at Ibrox.

Didn’t do henrik much harm though I think it hastened the end of tosh’s Celtic career……

  17. JFH,

My totally scientific research has concluded that Jozo Simunovic is a very good young player.

Both of my native friends who took part in my survey have proferred this opinion . So, what more do you need?

We certainly need him based on the last few week. That’s for sure.

You’re right that a senior player throwing his weight about against a development squad youngster is out of order and it’s not the same as two senior team mates scrapping.

If the rumours are true and a couple of the senior squad piled in on behalf of young Tierney then I think that’s a good thing; shows a bit of spirit and a moral compass within the squad. I’d be more worried if a senior player was bullying a youngster and no one did a thing about it.
