Policing as Celtic return to Lanarkshire

291

Celtic fans return to Lanarkshire on Saturday, just a few miles away from New Douglas Park, where Hamilton Accies and Celtic fans were both harassed while cooperating together to protest against the Offensive Behaviour’ Act.

The policing at Hamilton two weeks ago was politically motivated. It used recent legislation, ostensibly designed to protect society from sectarianism, to prohibit peaceful political protest. The concerted forces of the Scottish Government and Police Scotland has ensured that your freedom to stage peaceful political protest is been enormously curtailed in recent years – banners bearing the message “Accies against the Act” were confiscated.

If you were subject to any of the well documented police action at Hamilton, and intend travelling to Motherwell on Saturday, do not be surprised if you are singled out.

Fir Park Motherwell is a considerably more combustible venue than New Douglas Park. It has been the scene of vandalism, general hooliganism and a pitch invasion to taunt opposition fans in recent times. Police appear reluctant to get involved with fans for these activities at Motherwell. As a football fan, it is your political views you have to watch out for.

Before planning your trip to Motherwell it’s worth revisiting this comment by Brogan Rogan’ last week.

Also take a look at the Citizens Advice notice on police powers in Scotland. If police search you, even if no offence has been committed, they can seize whatever they want. Some pretty innocuous political dissent has been proscribed.  I’m appalled – and so are some officers I know.

Living on the streets in winter in Scotland has to be one of the most challenging aspects of humanity.  Next month, you can share what this means, by sleeping trackside at Celtic Park with dozens of others for the Foundation, as part of hte 2015 Christmas Appeal.  The Celtic Foundation provide nourishment and shelter to the many of the city’s homeless each winter.

This is social outreach at its hardest.  There is nothing easy about sleeping rough in Scotland.  You can find out more here.  Join in and aim to raise £125.  Well done to the dozens already signed up.

Don’t worry I do, but after the violence last year and all the governments sitting back and allowing Israel to basically target practice the citizens of Gaza I can’t ever see a proper future for them.

They are being put through hell. They must wonder what they have done to deserve this.

Without excusing the actions of the police, and I’m not, because it’s nothing more than harassment. Can anybody remember a time when the youngsters didn’t get grief?

TBH as far as I’m concerned there’s always been an element of the force that go out of their way to make youths lives unpleasant in general. In my day it was skateboarding that seemed to get us in trouble. Quite often the mere presence of a board was enough to lead to unnecessary questioning.

    ———————————————————————————————————————–

Not an unreasonable observation. Is it any worse today than than when I was attending matches as a kid? I can’t say for sure – I have no eimpirical evidence so any opinion would be just that. But just because it may have happened in the past, that doesn’t excuse it happening now. The police should not be in a position to abuse their power – but clearly they do. Society changes – and hopefully it improves. But it take action to make that improvement. So let’s not let up on demanding a change to this ridiculous Scottish Government legislation.

Of course and after going a bit quiet it seems to have ramped up again which leads me to suspect either:

    a) somebody wants a rise in convictions under it, to show it’s necessary; or

    b) somebody is trying to increase the number of those arrested with charges dropped to show it’s useless.

Either way it’s causing unnecessary grief and it needs binned.

On whether the club (or clubs) should be making comment. I imagine that at the 1st sniff of a tale of “Celtic questioning actions of police” they would be all over it like a rash saying we were interfering with police business. Bear in mind the smsm still holds some sway and that the last time it was surveyed something like 60% of respondents thought the OBFA was a good and successful piece of legislation.

Never saw the pictures , also I don’t think some stabbing merits what the IDF forces do to hugely populated areas not to mention the ongoing daily harassment of Palestinians aswel as removing them from their homes for Jewish settlers.

I’m very aware that Israel has suffered tragic deaths also.

It’s nice to read that Virgil has condemned the gutter press for telling porky pies.

My problem these days is why is the Press so against Celtic that every game we play there are negative comment from some journalists?, or even worse from National T/V, BBC in particular, What has Celtic done that makes the MSM Tell lies about us and what ex players say, they misconstrue what the players have said to the point I believed them, and was very angry with Virgil for saying that,Only to find this morning that virgil never said that.

We have a situation in Scotland where one team can get away with criminal activities and never a word is said against them, How can that Happen,Then we get lies told about Celtic player who said this morning that he never said anything of the kind, We have ex Celtic players who are so called commentators? who have sold their soles for a few negative comments always about Celtic teams & Players, Where have all the decent journalists gone, We used to have them, Not pro Celtic Journalists, just decent guys who only tell it as it happens,Factually.

Guys when I was younger and a willing participant in the Jungle choir some of the songs that were sung would now have you hung drawn and quartered.Times have changed and we Celtic fans in general like to believe we hold the moral high ground so while we all know this act is all about whatabouterty maybe its time to stick to Celtic songs only at football grounds and leave the rebel songs for other avenues.

In the 50s & 60s I remember when kids would stand at the turnstiles and asked to be lifted over,There were a few thousand I would imagine, They never got grief, I never once saw a copper stop them. But that was then, not now.

    Dear Paul67

How am I supposed to discretely look at CQN articles during working hours when you add not-so-discrete comments to articles like the one on Prso’s comments on Jozo? The final phrase of of ‘Prso played with Rangers before the club died in 2012.’ almost made me spray my mouthful of coffee out, and certainly attracted the notice of my boss, who sits opposite me! ☺

I wonder if it’s been rising since the days of more widespread or perhaps maybe just the on street drinking laws. Certainly since they came in I’ve been seeing lads getting grief – not just when they actually had a drink in hand.

  17. What Shauny meant to say in the ‘Scots loss worse than Black Sunday” piece, was that, while he felt even worse the other night than he did at full time on what is now known as Light-grey Sunday in some places e.g ma hoose, the knowledge that Celtic were being cheated during that and many other seasons, makes the memories of the 2005 events much easier to take, especially when, by minimal application of the rules, one 3 point deduction for one match involving any one of the multiple improperly registered Deidco players, means that Celtic, and thus you Shauny, arrived at Fir Park that day as Champions for season 2004-5.

Hence the lightening of the Darkness round these parts.

The same can be applied to 2002-3 of course.

  22. Whenever the talk on CQN turns to politics it’s usually not good, but there have been a few posts on here about the deaths of Palestinians by the IDF. It’s tragic, but there are also lots of israeli Jewish victims of terrorism but never much mention of that. What sets my radar buzzing is the tens of thousands right now being murdered around the globe-in Turkey and Syria, Arab on Arab ,Muslim on Muslim and barely a mention on CQN. The selective judgement is quite revealing I am afraid.

I’m just saying that doing something a month after going out is hardly a move designed to ease the pain of the exit. Had it been within a couple of days. Maybe.
