Policing as Celtic return to Lanarkshire

291

Celtic fans return to Lanarkshire on Saturday, just a few miles away from New Douglas Park, where Hamilton Accies and Celtic fans were both harassed while cooperating together to protest against the Offensive Behaviour’ Act.

The policing at Hamilton two weeks ago was politically motivated. It used recent legislation, ostensibly designed to protect society from sectarianism, to prohibit peaceful political protest. The concerted forces of the Scottish Government and Police Scotland has ensured that your freedom to stage peaceful political protest is been enormously curtailed in recent years – banners bearing the message “Accies against the Act” were confiscated.

If you were subject to any of the well documented police action at Hamilton, and intend travelling to Motherwell on Saturday, do not be surprised if you are singled out.

Fir Park Motherwell is a considerably more combustible venue than New Douglas Park. It has been the scene of vandalism, general hooliganism and a pitch invasion to taunt opposition fans in recent times. Police appear reluctant to get involved with fans for these activities at Motherwell. As a football fan, it is your political views you have to watch out for.

Before planning your trip to Motherwell it’s worth revisiting this comment by Brogan Rogan’ last week.

Also take a look at the Citizens Advice notice on police powers in Scotland. If police search you, even if no offence has been committed, they can seize whatever they want. Some pretty innocuous political dissent has been proscribed.  I’m appalled – and so are some officers I know.

Living on the streets in winter in Scotland has to be one of the most challenging aspects of humanity.  Next month, you can share what this means, by sleeping trackside at Celtic Park with dozens of others for the Foundation, as part of hte 2015 Christmas Appeal.  The Celtic Foundation provide nourishment and shelter to the many of the city’s homeless each winter.

This is social outreach at its hardest.  There is nothing easy about sleeping rough in Scotland.  You can find out more here.  Join in and aim to raise £125.  Well done to the dozens already signed up.

Good to see Mark McGhee is back in management at Motherwell I hope after next week-end he does well.H.H.

  2. Back again…..

So when ah was wee, there used to be cans of jolly green giant sweet corn.

The cans not only resembled Heinz treacle steamed pudding cans, but were cooked in the same way.

UNopened , they were plunged into a bubbling pan of boiling water. After 25-30 mins the can was removed from the torment of tossing around in a turbulent ocean of scalding steam and pierced with a can opener.

However the unlike the steamed treacle pudding, the pierced can of Jolly Green Giant Sweet corn……squealed……..My dad told me the squeal was the Jolly Green Giant in agony.

I have never been able to eat Sweet corn uagain until tonight…..and that story is remarkable… Back later…

    Hail hail

If we had one that then the Jolly Green Giant would not have squealed.

Although over the years I have suspected that ma dad may have been on the wind up…..sweet corn screws yer judgement never underestimate the power of the steamed sweet corn

The CL is not a shoe in any more, there are no guarantees, not matter who qualifying .

But player manager at Celtic park? You honestly can’t be serious?

    Why not?

If you can make do with a managerial rookie like NL, why not a player manager?

Maybe Shaun Maloney considered this was his lastchance at representing Scotland at a major Championship maybe at the time Shaun was confident that other championships would come in his time at Celtic

Doesn’t make him any less of a Celtic supporter because he didn’t take it as badly as you me or anyone else

I consider Henrik Larsonn as my greatest ever Celt even although a Celtic commissioned opinion poll disagreed with me so I am booking an appointment straight away with my GP tomorrow

Maloney is another candidate for a visit to a Scottish worlplace in the wake of a result like Black Sunday.

    I was sick for months.

    Estadio,

I remember REAL corn on the cob reaching north east Sutherland in the early seventies – my Mam boiled it for hours – sticking the knife in occasionally to see if soft – as per tatties, neeps, carrots etc. Think it went to the hens in the end.

  7. I posted earlier that Johansen was our only player on duty tonight.

I’ve just noticed Honduras have a geme tonight so izzy might be involved too.

  8. Hello zico maltese bhoy.We played together a few times although im a year younger. One year at under 17 or 18 we had a good goalscoring competition. We also played Sunday morning and have shared a pint in Quins.

  9. Lack of competition is a critical issue. The biggest strength of the EPL is the strength of the competition and unpredictability rather than the quality of the matches. It drives interest in the game. Throw in the media/press bubble who hold people accountable, debate, discuss and promote the game without favour and you have a winner.

  10. Timomouse

No Scott Allan in that list, why did we sign him ? I thought he was beng touted as one of the best

Mind you that was when they all thought he would be simply :-)

    Hail Hail

  11. No Scotland defeat comes anywhere near close to that horrible Sunday at Fir Park. Black Sunday was an all time low for me in supporting Celtic. Wee Shaun is entitled to his opinion but maybe one day he”ll understand how we felt in the stands that afternoon. His Scotland team also lost out to the Irish and Poles who weren’t cheating.

CQN’s new book is called The Winds of Change and tells the story of seven Celtic managers from Liam Brady arriving to MON leaving after Black Sunday in 2005. Plenty of highs in between though.

If you enjoyed Caesar & The Assassin this is the follow up…

  12. Slightly concerning that our next two league matches are against teams with new managers. Honeymoon periods and all that.

  13. Or Kilmarnock in 2003, when that ex bank of Scotland head, the one that funded a now deceased team, well his team lay down to his funded one, Chris Sutton put it better though :-)

    Hail Hail

  14. Not particularly interested in who will/might be representing Scotland in 2020, if I’m honest.

Much more interested in who will/might be playing for Celtic.

…and if everything goes to plan we will/might be heading for ten in a row.

    HH!!

  15. Norway one up.

    Well taken goal by Tettey.

Have we not been linked with him?

    HH!!

  16. Winning Captains

    Spot on regards Black Sunday.

Made even more sickening when the extent of their cheating was laid bare.

Took me quite a while to recover from that.

My buddy hit the bevvy and didn’t go home for 3 days.

He returned on the Wednesday to find his Mrs had packed his bags.

And wee Shaun reckons not qualifying for the Euros was worse.

Tell u what I wasn’t singing doe a deer that Sunday.

    Book sounds good!

  21. West End of East End on

Reading back I’m not sure if I’m in the minority or not, but I don’t want Celtic moving to England or another country to play. We’re a Scottish team and should play in Scotland.

If an Atlantic league or something similar was to get off the ground, then that’s different, but moving to England is a no for me…

  22. Virgil having a mare. Like the big man but the second goal for the Checks was a shocker for him.

Just been reading up about Charles Green’s legal case against Secvo. Given Chuckles track record with onerous contracts I suspect this one is water tight. Otherwise his legal counsel wouldn’t have taken it to court in the first place. It looks like next months hearing will convieniently conincide with the lack of cash to meet payroll and fit the ‘it’s all Charles fault’ narrative. Chuckles is turning out to be as big a hero as our Craig and that takes a bit of doing.

  24. Been saying since about 1968 that we should apply to join the English league, if we are to really fully realise our potential. It could have happened when we were one of the best teams in the wordl. C\an’t see it now.

Black Sunday was my worse time as far as I can remember as a Celtic supporter- and there have been plenty of lows. I was in deepest darkest Yorkshire and had to drive back over the Pennines to Salford. Bad night.
