It will be a first for the match official in regards a game involving the Hoops, but he was the whistler in Sevco Rangers’ 1-0 win over Osijek in Croatia last month in their Europa League second round first leg qualifier. The game passed without incident.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have already faced their Norwegian foes four times in Champions League qualifiers over the past two seasons, winning two and drawing two. The confrontations have been fought out in a largely sporting manner with the Scots scoring four goals and Rosenborg responding with one.

Gil has yet to control a Champions League group stage match, but the 42-year-old has been handling Europa League games for five years.

He was in charge of three World Cup qualifiers, including Spain’s 2-1 win away to Macedonia.
