Political scammers one and all

Peter Lawwell’s comments on Friday that Celtic receive no support from Glasgow City or Scottish Government circles reflects years of plans being frustrated by incoherent rejections.

Were it not for the Commonwealth Games being hosted in the city in 2014, planning permission to redevelop the area to the front of Celtic Park would continue to be rejected. The reality that the Queen would drive past a derelict former school, with vegetation growing from every nook, was sufficient motivation for the Council to allow Celtic to remove the building and landscape the area.  You have Her Mag. to thank for the Celtic Way.

Celtic would like a fanzone. Somewhere you can congregate before a match, where you might even be able to visit a toilet, but the Council doesn’t want it. Planning permission is sought for the hotel. On the face of it, this is a fantastic initiative for a long-deprived area of the city, the Council should be doing their best to encourage Celtic into spending the money, not looking disinterested.

Then we have the proposed no parking zone, which would see it illegal for you to park within one mile of Celtic Park on match days. Parking would start at the one mile limit, but would surely extend a couple of miles beyond this before we are all accommodated. Public transport to and from the area is vastly under served, there simply isn’t the capacity to cope with many football fans. Your choice will be to walk miles to and from the game, or stop going.

The likely change of administration at the Council, from Labour to SNP isn’t necessarily going to help, either. A councillor from the latter camp raised concerns when Celtic asked for permission to build the Superstore, citing that it could damage trade going to local supermarkets.  This is the environment we have to operate in!

The Scottish Government set their faces to stone on the subject of Celtic when Alex Salmond decided to get involved in Scottish football in 2011, leaving us with the ludicrous Offensive Behaviour’ Act.

The Scottish Parliament voted to repeal this act last year, after countless football fans, and Celtic, campaigned on the issue. However, the will of the Scottish Parliament isn’t always respected by the Scottish Government, who ignored the vote, before setting their 2017 agenda on inducing moral outrage when the will of the Scottish Parliament is ignored.

The irony should be disappointing, but it’s not even surprising. Scammers, one and all.

A reminder that this year’s CQN Open Golf takes place at our usual Aberdour venue on Friday 28 July.  Walk with Shay and the Celtic FC Foundation are our primary beneficiaries.  Costs are £80 for the whole day (including golf) and £45 for evening-only guests.  Applications to cqnopen@gmail.com  .

    OK I’m a cheapskate.

BRENDAN RODGERS believes he won’t lose a single player before the summer’s crucial Champions League qualifiers and is confident he will add to his squad before the first game in July.

The Celtic manager on Friday signed a four-year deal and would surely not have done so had he not been given certain assurances from the board about his transfer budget for the next window.

Rodgers has actually not spent what he could have during his ten months at Celtic, Scott Sinclair’s £3.5million deal being his biggest spend, and with this season’s Champions League money available, the Northern Irishman is in a strong position regarding who is sold and bought on his watch.

I honestly don’t believe for a moment that I have a ‘myopic’ view on refugees. However, only the naïve would profess that in amongst the suffering are not some charlatans. Of course there are affluent deserving refugees just like there are affluent queue jumpers too.

I personally would love to see a world without borders, but we both know that is never going to happen.

I can’t claim to be the world’s most caring or humane person, but over the years I have tried to do my wee bit. Last year I tried to help refugees on the Iranian border. I did so against a lot of advice and intimidation. I was not allowed within 20 miles of the border. They didn’t want a blue eyed foreigner to see their treatment of stateless humans. I tried but I failed and to this day I am still paying the price of trying.

Last night when you were posting I was doing all I could to get a refugee into Canada. The ticket is bought, now I only hope that it turns out for the best. Insha Allah. And if it doesn’t then I have accepted the obligation to do all I can, as long as I breathe, for that one lost soul.

A few years ago, I was working out in the desert when I was offered $30k US to get an Iranian girl into the UK. God be my judge on what I just wrote. She was not a refugee. I didn’t take the $30k.

I have known real sad refugees and I emptied my pockets and I have known charlatans and I did not fill my pockets.

I don’t make policy, I’m just nobody who bows to the law; but I am nobody with a heart cast in empathy as the son of a persecuted immigrant, and I have a very simple philosophy in life which has been, ever since I was a kid, to help but just one person find a joy in life. I’ve done that and tomorrow I will still be breathing and there will be another one who needs help and I don’t know what I will do.

I don’t claim to have a panacea for suffering but I most certainly feel the suffering of others and I am not indifferent to it. I’d be interested to know your views on why the UK won’t let all those Calais refugees into the UK. I feel for them but what does that matter. That being said I will not condemn the UK and her citizens over the tragedy that is the Calais moribund.

Brendan Rodgers wants Lee Congerton to unearth the next Philippe Countinho.

Fresh from winning the title and signing a new four year contract the hoops boss is spelling out exactly what he intends to do next.

Projects and squad men don’t interest Rodgers who wants to bring in high end quality to his side to make them competitive in Europe.

    AdTech Ad

The obvious names are unlikely to be interested in Celtic regardless of Rodgers’ presence but with the help of his new recruitment manager the Irishman is setting his sights high.

“We have a very clever board so if we can make an investment of £8.5m, and in two years it can get you £40m to £50m, then I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do that,” Rodgers explained in the Scotsman.

“You look at what you can gain against the risk. There is talent out there and we will always look to get it. Plus, as a Celtic supporter, I know what they want.

“They have always had someone with the magic, someone who gets them up off their feet. Hence the reason I brought in Scott Sinclair, who gets them up off their seat. We’ll be looking for that.

“There will always be a ceiling, I respect that. It’s not an open cheque book but I feel the board will always do everything they possibly can to get the right type of players in that we want.

“I’ve had those conversations, we know exactly where we are with all of that.”

Rodgers added: “The reason I brought in Lee Congerton was because he’s one of the best at it. This is the guy who found me Coutinho. No-one would have heard of Coutinho otherwise.

“When I worked at Chelsea I remember Lee being away in South America. He came back and told me about two players who were 14 or 15. He said ‘wow, there are two players out there we’ve got to try and ?get’. It was Coutinho and ?Neymar.

the profile and everything has to be right to fit in with the club. “But Coutinho at 14 was great. He was at Vasco da Gama and Chelsea tried to do a deal, but they’d already done one with Inter Milan. He went there at 16 but I was always aware of him. Then when I was at Liverpool I got the guys to find out about him. Inter Milan were struggling for money and young players very rarely got a chance. So it was an opportunity for us to get him.

“He cost £8.5million, that’s what we got him for. What’s he worth now? But no-one knew of Coutinho. But he was in our team at 19 and he flourishes. So there is talent out there and we will always look to get it.”

Aiden McGeady was the closest that Celtic came to finding a number 10 since the departure of Lubo Moravcik.

Tom Rogic and Stuart Armstrong both provide plenty of options in attacking midfield roles but from his comments.

Having gone on record with his transfer requirements it’ll be a summer of excitement for Celtic fans as they wait to discover the signing that is a mix of Sinclair and Countinho

  22. BT

Not much time to answer the “speculate to accumulate” argument just now but it applies to Brendan and celtic as much as any other manager anc club.

Let me limit myself to highlighting a couple of words in his quote”

“We have a very clever board so if we can make an investment of £8.5m, and in two years it can get you £40m to £50m, then I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t do that,” Rodgers explained in the Scotsman.

These are positive words but they are unidirectional and beguiling. The correct word to use when you are referring to hypotheticals is the conditional tense. “Can” should be read (by clever people) as “may” or “might’ or “could”. Using “can” like this is salesman language. All managers want investment on the playing side; they all hope to accumulate from our investment. Previous managers thought we would “make” on our investments in Amido Balde and Stefan Scepovic but there are always two other possibilities to the beguiling option of making a profit- those are – breaking even- and speculating to accumulate…..losses.

Brendan has earned the right to enjoy a wee splash- let’s hope it brings us what we want. At Liverpool, during 7 transfer windows, he spent £300m on plyers and sold others for £200m. The Liverpool fans do not believe that they got value out of this speculation but they were one Steven Gerrard slip away from changing their minds on that judgement.

    Gotta go now.
