Politicians cannot help themselves look down on fans

209

After Celtic fans gathered around Trongate to celebrate the league win on Saturday, first minister Humza Yousaf, took to the media to say, “Clubs can do more, should do more – organise those celebrations, be involved in those celebrations.

“Perhaps they can reflect on what they can do for future years.”

What he is referring to is a fanzone.  An area with facilities, security, opening and closing times and a scheduled tidy-up process.  They exist all over the world, cities across Europe have wallowed in celebration at some local success.  In Glasgow, we are caught between an SNP council, which does not want to give an inch to Celtic, and an SNP first minister, who is happy to be critical of Celtic and Celtic fans, in an attempt to placate the other side of the city, even though he took no time to discover why there was no club organised event.

None of this is anti-Celtic, it is not personal, it is not prejudiced, it is just the result of inept politics and inept politicians.  The city and the country would do better if the Celtic fans on Trongate were in charge of both.

Just remembered Frankfurt celebrating last May!  That’s a city council that knows what it’s doing.

A great afternoon spent in the Shipbank with a fine Celt.

    Hail Hail Big Jimmy.

  2. BURNLEY78 @ 6:59 PM,

Yes, at over seven pound a pint business was good – we had a fanzone at Adams Park when Wasps were here, a Magniers Marquee et al, the remnants are still there including the marquee.

It was odd being in Adams Park with a pint of Magniers when watching the rugby but of course you can’t take drink into the ground when watching Wycombe Wanderers.

If I did make an implicit accusation and I’m not at all sure I did, it was that the Board failed to get Ange on a [lucrative] long term contract, even in February he was batting away the notion that he was going to England and explicitly said he wanted to stay…

…and I am still here even though people have been getting me out the door and I think you’ll be surprised how long I am here — I’m consumed by trying to make this club the best it can be. And I’ll enjoy every minute of it.”

  4. Ange’s appointment was a fairly high-risk strategy for Celtic. But it has paid off in abundance. With success comes recognition and interest from wealthier clubs.

It has always been thus. According to Eamonn Dunphy Jock Stein had a meeting with Matt Busby in 1972 (brokered by Pat Crerand). Stein was keen to take over from Matt. Strangely, the negotiations foundered as neither Stein nor Busby wanted the responsibility for ending the Old Trafford careers of Law and Charlton. Each wanted the other to do the deed.

If the Spurs story is true let’s hope for a significant last minute hitch.

Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle will prove another difficult test for Celtic as both teams battle it out for more silverware.

Given that, in the event of success, supporters have traditionally gathered at Celtic Park following the match, we can confirm that safety and operational arrangements are being put in place at Celtic Park over the coming days.

The Club will communicate further with supporters regarding all matchday arrangements in due course.

Thank you for your continued support 🍀

I already gave you my evidence on the Populist Party- 2 of the main characters were a White Supremacist and a Wee Free anti-evolutionist.

Re above – When Watson started out in the Pops (and they were doing well) he espoused equality. Generally speaking the People’s Party were well ahead of their rivals on race but were still a product of their times. The Democrats were the real bastards when it came to racism as I’m sure you’re aware of.

Bryan was a Democrat was he not? But because of his belief in abandoning the gold standard the Pops felt they had to back him/the Dems even though it meant sacrificing their more progressive/reform aims. This was a particularly bitter pill to swallow for the southern white and black activists who had risked their lives to stand against the Dems.

‘…I don’t know what MLK quote you are referring to but he was educated enough to know that the reality of interracial cooperation in the Populist Party was a facade of Give us your votes and we’ll look after you….’

Re above. I don’t know where you are getting your information from regarding Martin Luther King but it is completely and utterly wrong. Apologies for the long extract below but it’s much better than me trying to paraphrase:

    _______

(The People, No – A Brief History of Anti-Populism by Thomas Frank pg109)]

At the conclusion of the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama

—in some ways the last great, unambiguous triumph of the civil rights

movement—Martin Luther King Jr. stood before the Alabama state capitol

building, its Confederate flag flapping in the breeze, and recited the words

of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Before he came to that famous

peroration, however, he gave his fellow marchers a short lesson in a

different chapter of American history—the origins of racial segregation.

Where did this awful system come from, anyway? King’s answer: it began,

in part, as a stratagem to defeat Populism, which had made a shocking bid

in the 1890s to bring together poor blacks and poor whites into

    overwhelming majorities across the South.

The leaders of this movement began awakening the poor white masses and

the former Negro slaves to the fact that they were being fleeced by the

emerging Bourbon interests. Not only that, but they began uniting the Negro

and white masses into a voting bloc that threatened to drive the Bourbon

interests from the command posts of political power in the South.

The powerful, however, didn’t fancy being unseated from their position

of dominance in the South. To protect themselves, they tried to divide

their working-class enemies, falling back on the old ruse of white

supremacy. “They saturated the thinking of the poor white masses with

it,” King continued, “thus clouding their minds to the real issue involved

    in the Populist movement.”

They then directed the placement on the books of the South of laws that

made it a crime for Negroes and whites to come together as equals at any

level. And that did it. That crippled and eventually destroyed the Populist

    movement of the nineteenth century.

What followed was one of King’s all-time great images. The Bourbons,

he recounted, “took the world and gave the poor white man Jim Crow.”

And when his wrinkled stomach cried out for the food that his empty pockets

could not provide, he ate Jim Crow, a psychological bird that told him that

no matter how bad off he was, at least he was a white man, better than the

black man. And he ate Jim Crow.

That, King concluded, was the tragic story of how the original Populist

revolt was squashed. The masters of the South trashed their own society,

set human against human in a racist death struggle, all to keep themselves

secure in their exalted place. They segregated their world to death:

It was a remarkable speech in many ways, not least because in this

passage King got the broad sweep of the Populist story right.

    _______

Thanks for the links, I’ll have a look. And by the same token you should check out the book I took the extract from. I guarantee after reading it you won’t use the term ‘populist’ again and will be as cranky as I am when you hear it misused:-)

  25. Football journalists at the likes of the London Evening Standard have zero interest in stirring up unrest in Glasgow ahead of the Cup Final. If they are claiming that Levy has been impressed by Ange and they are ready to step up their interest it is because they have been briefed about it. These guys have no Hun agenda.

I said earlier, the English media would not be running with this without reason. Levy’s people will have spoken to Ange’s people to see if their is interest. That answer will be what shifted the media reporting and consequently the bookies odds.

The best I can hope for is that Ange remains undecided. That he is open to discussio. If we hear the cliche of Spurs asking for permission to speak with him then we know the deal is done. Levy will not risk being publicly humiliated twice in a week.

You’re on a loser trying to tie the use of populism as a word in Europe to a short lived political movement I the USA- there have been too many localised examples of populism as a term being applied to parties who shared some or none of the characteristics of the US Party, and, of whom, most had no knowledge. The dictionary definition of the term is that it refers to a party that claims to represent the interests of the people. Since all of them do, this is a fairly unhelpful term for political analysis. Macron’s Centre-right is a populist party, the Brexit movement is seen as populist and many Nationalist parties claim to represent the views of a (their) people.

Thomas Frank (not the Brentford guy) is an interesting guy but I’ve not read his book. I would be interested to know how a historian could draw a causal link between the brief period of influence of the Populists in 1890 with the emergence of Jim Crow laws which started appearing in the 1870’s and were, in any case, just a reproduction of the pre-war conditions replacing overt slavery with indentured employment that kept you in hock to the company store. Bryan’s party did nothing to alleviate or counter these conditions. They may have appealed to black voters and members to give them their vote on promises unfulfilled but they did not advance the career of any black man or risk alienating the voter base by being seen as a black-friendly party.

Bryan was happy to work as a Southern Democrat and was a very unworldly sheltered man with a fairly undisciplined man with an unrealistic hankering for an agrarian past that had never existed. If he lived today he’d be a tele-evangelist dabbling in cryptocurrency. Of the two main founders- Watson reverted to the White Supremacist views he always had and Weaver became a Republican for a while before starting another 3rd Party and was most influential in opening up Indian Territory, another oppressed group, to white settlement. The Populist Party remerged with the Democrats who still relied on a Southern bloc of votes based on racism.

George Wallace was a racist most of his life. he too claimed to have had a change of heart but no black man noticed anything different.

There were some progressive politicians within the racist Democrat party. The old crook Huey Long was a colourful example. The much maligned Lyndon B Johnson, paid a price of backing the criminal expansion of the Vietnam War to allow his economic reforms to pass. Scratch any Southern Democrat late 19th and most of the 20th century and you’ll not be long in finding a trace of a Good Ol’Boy

  35. We can’t do anything much to persuade or dissuade Ange from going to a bigger league and club (economically).

It will be his decision and I doubt it will be announced until well after our (hopefully) Treble winning attempt this weekend.

If he goes, he goes with our thanks for a great 2 years. If he stays, great- let’s get on with it.

MON’s time has come and gone. He would be inheriting a squad with a make up unlike a MON team. It would speak to us being a schizophrenic club with no future model by going from Angeball to MONball. Just as daft as a Biers?Marsch Leeds team going into the hands of Sam Allardyce.

If Ange goes, we will just have to punt again. Whoever we get will not meet with universal approval, that’s for sure and we will see the re-appearnance of hoary old stand bys – biscuit tin, Suits, Hidden hand of Lawwell, calls for Desmond to be a proper sugar daddy, and lack of ambition from the Viv Nicholson proponents of Fur Coat/Nae Knickers fitba.
