Post-match, Robinson was shoddy, calculated and worse than James Scott

614

Ryan Christie’s pitched cross for Scott Sinclair to open the scoring with a volley was a thing of beauty.  It was 30 minutes into the game and Motherwell were withstanding everything Celtic could muster; it was going to take something special to open them up.  Sinclair’s finish was accomplished.

Ewan Henderson, on his first start in senior football, created space on the right wing to send a ball onto the forehead of Odsonne Eduard for the French striker to score his first of the day.  His second, which arrived on 88 minutes, but was just as crucial, was a thundering free kick from 26 yards, which clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

You wait weeks for a great goal then you get four in one afternoon.  James Forrest darted into the box before sliding the ball into the path of Oliver Burke, who finished in the top corner.

So good for Celtic, but the story of this game runs a little deeper.  As though our central mid problems were not significant enough, Ryan Christie collapsed injured, prompting Kris Ajer to knock the ball out of play.  But, also making his first start in senior football was Motherwell’s 18-year-old striker, James Scott.

Scott collected the subsequent uncontested throw-in, which convention dictated would be returned to Celtic, but the teenager ran into the empty Celtic half and fired a shot at Scott Bain.  The Celtic keeper saved, but Scott had an accomplice in the form of 24-year-old Gboly Ariyibi, who scored with the rebound.

At this point, the game needed someone of character to make the right decision.  Unfortunately, this proverbial football fell at the feet of Motherwell manager, Steve Robinson.  He just “didn’t know what to do”.  Motherwell accepted the advantage their break with acceptable standards provided them with, without recourse.

I get teenagers make worse mistakes than this, although we should be clear, he has played the game all his life and will be more familiar with this scenario than you or I.  I could also understand that Robinson was caught like a rabbit in the disco lights, but then the Motherwell manager tried to throw Celtic fans under the bus in a clear case of whataboutery in his post-match interview, by accusing them of celebrating the departure of injured Carl McHugh.  Robinson has already told the radio audience McHugh has been knocked unconscious for the fourth time in his career.

This context was unavailable to Celtic fans during the game.  The context of Robinson’s comments were crystal clear.  It was shoddy, calculated and therefore worse than James Scott’s earlier transgression.

If you like football of the blood and snotters variety, the remaining 39 minutes, plus 9 minutes added-time, were right up your street.  The goal upset Celtic’s hold on the game and until Edouard’s late strike, Motherwell controlled the game.  But, the champions had enough and finished the visitors off in distinguished fashion.

he did not say anything .he hinted of bad news.so bad news about who bad news about what.

  2. Since Jock Stein, no Celtic manager has stayed longer than five years and many have had shockingly short tenures. Just the way it is I suppose.

Up until 5pm I was in wee BGFCs camp arguing in the pub after yesterday’s game that I could not see him leaving, especially to a team I believe are on the wane.

Percents who knows but I wouldn’t post unless I was pretty certain, as you know

I’m in the standing section and I didn’t think there was a connection. The guys that lead the chanting have their backs to the pitch so I doubt they even seen the guy getting carried off. Some people might have had that in mind, I don’t know, but I was part of it and had no idea that the guy was going off. It seemed like a way to fill time. Probably no point in posting this though as there’s posters on here you can tell are just itching to have a go at fellow tims who don’t support Celtic in a way they approve of.

  6. If as we all expect this is BRs last season.

Then please please please, custodians do not ask Davie Moyes to take over.

Stevie Clarke would be my choice, or NFL.

BBC transparently winding Brendan up with questions less than 5 hours after an epl mgr sacked … hoping that we go tonto , thus proving the BBC are neutral … then octane fuelled pish on here

  9. Davie Weir quite surprisingly positive about Celtic on Reporting Scotland. As, indeed, was the whole article on the possibility of Brendan leaving.

Cant see him going to Leicester IF thats the deal going about. Maybe end of season.

    Europe with Leicester ??

Anyway, I was really annoyed when KD and MON left. But nothing surprises.

  11. Catman is a brilliant resource to this blog. When he is first with good transfer news we all get an immediate Buzz. Obviously no one wants to hear bad news but if it is bad news then it’s not Catman’s fault. If it’s going to happen then it will happen regardless.

The thing that would scunner me would be if he left at this pivotal stage of the season, but apart from fact that he is under contract I simply can’t see him doing it.

He is already a Celtic Legend and if he left right now it would not go down well.

I suspect if he is going then it will be at end of season. If that is to happen I imagine he will do everything to secure the Treble Treble and go out in a blaze of glory.

  12. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Surprised if Brendan fancies going to Leicester. They will not break into the top four (yes, I know they won the league).

He certainly didn’t rule it out though, although it could be he knows it isn’t a bad thing to have it known you are wanted.

Realistically, if he doesn’t fancy another two years here then this year would be the most obvious time to go.

Hope we are keeping an eye on possible quality replacements, just incase.

  13. Catman.

I appreciative the information you give us on here.

Good or bad, keep it coming, don’t shoot the messenger, I say.

  16. If BR wants to leave, then why now?

I thought he was meant to be here for another year, as I thought he signed a 4 year deal.

Has something happened to make him want to leave?

That should be the question, that we need an answer to.

2 points on BR .A.he likes to hear himself talk.he won’t be in demand at LEI.

B.anyone daft enough to leave CELTIC for LEI is too stupid to be CELTIC manager.

ps .if he goes i can tell you the headlines on FF and all papers.SHAT IT.

  18. onenightinlisbon on

Leicester would be a huge gamble for him. He would be expected to keep them close to the top of the table. No guarantee of that happening and if not who would want him then? I would really be disappointed if he didn’t see out the rest of his contract. He talks of being one of us, what one of us would turn our back on being the man who led us to ten in a row?

  19. Leaving to go to Leicester doesnt make any sense but then we aren’t Brendan Rodgers

Assuming it would be the end of the season, trying to motivate players when they know you are for the off at the end of the season would be my main worry

  20. WDH – everyone has a story of taking the wrong fork in the road – this could be Brendan’s- not for money but for Glory !

  21. mike in toronto on

Leicester won the CL group and narrowly got knocked out of the CL by Atletico only 2 years ago ….

and many experts figured that their title win was worth about $500 million to the club….

so, I can see a manager looking at that and thinking, ‘I could do something with this’

So, if BR decides he wants to go – that is a big IF – then I wish him well and thank him for his fantastic contribution…

the question then would be when and who replaces him….

part of me would want him to take it now …. we are not so far ahead that we can take it easy until the end of the season…. and it would be hard for anyone to stay that focused on the task at hand, when you know that your ‘real/full-time job’ is down in England ….

but, who would we get in the interim?

I have made no secret of the fact that I have been impressed by SC… but not certain Killie would let him go, or that he would take the job.

Would NFL be interested in taking the reins until the end of the season? Gets a few more trophies on his resume, which cant hurt if he is looking for another gig for next season.

  23. the glorious balance sheet on

Michael Stewart was making a lot of sense there on Sportsound.

Then he said “people go to the football and say things they wouldn’t get away with on the streets”

I wouldn’t agree with that. I see plenty of troglydytes singing the billy boys, the famine song etc on the public thoroughfares all across Scotland under the protection of police Scotland in state approved orange walks that have been granted consent by local authorities.

You can’t tackle racism and sectarianism in Scottish football without acknowledging and tackling the elephants in the room that are the orange and similar walks that poison our streets.

There isn’t a single political party in Scotland that has the balls for that.

Handwringing is about the extent of their action on this.

Leicester though? Team on the way down, horrible town. I still can’t see it. Maybe lined up for Chelsea job?
