Post-match, Robinson was shoddy, calculated and worse than James Scott

614

Ryan Christie’s pitched cross for Scott Sinclair to open the scoring with a volley was a thing of beauty.  It was 30 minutes into the game and Motherwell were withstanding everything Celtic could muster; it was going to take something special to open them up.  Sinclair’s finish was accomplished.

Ewan Henderson, on his first start in senior football, created space on the right wing to send a ball onto the forehead of Odsonne Eduard for the French striker to score his first of the day.  His second, which arrived on 88 minutes, but was just as crucial, was a thundering free kick from 26 yards, which clipped the underside of the bar on its way in.

You wait weeks for a great goal then you get four in one afternoon.  James Forrest darted into the box before sliding the ball into the path of Oliver Burke, who finished in the top corner.

So good for Celtic, but the story of this game runs a little deeper.  As though our central mid problems were not significant enough, Ryan Christie collapsed injured, prompting Kris Ajer to knock the ball out of play.  But, also making his first start in senior football was Motherwell’s 18-year-old striker, James Scott.

Scott collected the subsequent uncontested throw-in, which convention dictated would be returned to Celtic, but the teenager ran into the empty Celtic half and fired a shot at Scott Bain.  The Celtic keeper saved, but Scott had an accomplice in the form of 24-year-old Gboly Ariyibi, who scored with the rebound.

At this point, the game needed someone of character to make the right decision.  Unfortunately, this proverbial football fell at the feet of Motherwell manager, Steve Robinson.  He just “didn’t know what to do”.  Motherwell accepted the advantage their break with acceptable standards provided them with, without recourse.

I get teenagers make worse mistakes than this, although we should be clear, he has played the game all his life and will be more familiar with this scenario than you or I.  I could also understand that Robinson was caught like a rabbit in the disco lights, but then the Motherwell manager tried to throw Celtic fans under the bus in a clear case of whataboutery in his post-match interview, by accusing them of celebrating the departure of injured Carl McHugh.  Robinson has already told the radio audience McHugh has been knocked unconscious for the fourth time in his career.

This context was unavailable to Celtic fans during the game.  The context of Robinson’s comments were crystal clear.  It was shoddy, calculated and therefore worse than James Scott’s earlier transgression.

If you like football of the blood and snotters variety, the remaining 39 minutes, plus 9 minutes added-time, were right up your street.  The goal upset Celtic’s hold on the game and until Edouard’s late strike, Motherwell controlled the game.  But, the champions had enough and finished the visitors off in distinguished fashion.

Davie Weir quite surprisingly positive about Celtic on Reporting Scotland. As, indeed, was the whole article on the possibility of Brendan leaving.

Got to say when I saw how the boy McHugh landed it turned my stomach, falling face first his head was forced under his chest by the momentum, I thought he broke his neck.

Did not associate the noise with gloating at the injury and doubt very much anyone would have cheered had they seen it, those in the Jock Stein stand had the full on view.

I did note that those in the main stand applauded the boy on his way off.

The greatest ever opportunity for reunification being squandered .

No deal means that , in all probability , the border stays as it is , thereby greatly increasing the chance of reunification.

Massive trade deal completed today with the UKs newest and biggest trading partner, the Faeroe Islands a real feather in the cap for Mays team. Oh and any dispute costs will be borne by the UK, really know how to drive a hard bargain them torys. Hopeless unless they are dealing with homeless, unemployed and people below the poverty line pretty much anyone they can bully, anyone else and they assume the position.

Leicester make move for Brendan Rodgers

CELTIC manager Brendan Rodgers could have a decision to make as Leicester are believed to have made their move for the 46-year-old.

Rodgers is Leicester’s first choice candidate to assume the managerial role following the weekend sacking of Claude Puel this weekend.

It is understood that Rodgers had intimated that his preference was to remain at Celtic until the end of the season given the fact that the Parkhead side are chasing an unprecedented triple treble.

However, sources close to Leicester have suggested that filling the position is an immediate and one time offer as the Foxes look to appoint a manager as swiftly as possible to recuperate some of the damage sustained to their season.

However the Celtic Plc smell a transfer fee and have offered to drive him to the airport

  17. As I haven’t seen much of the last two games, outwith the highlights. Thanks for the Grand CQN updates and less grand BBC thing…

Firstly our goals yesterday were a thing of beauty, I get they were all good and the technique and quality was all first class but a special wee mention for Olly Burke, he put pressure on the defender to win possession for Celtic and after some awesome work from JF finished with such power and accuracy… sublime.

Something really stinks about the Motherwell goal… I’m not buying the rookie out of his depth scenario, there were three Motherwell players involved in that goal (I strongly suspect orchestrated from their bench).

The guy who took the shy did with purpose, it didn’t have any of the hallmarks of giving the ball back. The rookie must have realised the Celtic defence, in particular Kieran, made no effort to track back.

The scorer is an experience professional footballer, he knew exactly what he was doing. The fact is Motherwell cheated.

Add to that, they made no attempt to apologise the opposite in fact and took every opportunity to press the advantage the upset their cheating and their subsequent reaction had caused to the Celtic team.

At the end Robinson didn’t apologise and his only concern was for his upset rookie… similar to when Celtic upset that shrinking violet Kipre…

He is a cheat, pure and simple. If you try everything to get a result including blatant cheating and get beat by three goals, it doesn’t say much about you credentials as a manager, or human being for that matter.

    Hail Hail

Don’t see BR going myself, Leicester have the lowest payroll in the EPL, they don’t spend big on players, Vardy being an example, virtually plucked from an unknown for peanuts, they’re not going to be in the top 4 or 5 (at least for a few seasons) imho.

Someone else said if he was to move, the worry was he’d take some Celtic players, let’s hope he starts with Jack Henry.

I’m more concerned with CMG myself the silence on him is worrying.

  20. SFTB@ 3.37pm……..post of the year so far.

I too can never understand why Celtic fans publicly slag the club…CQN is maybe/probably read by more people who are no friends of ours than Celtic fans.

Celtic are flying- Lenny took us to maybe 90% of our potential, Ronny-88% and Brendan 96%.

The press in the next 10 days is going to be Gym Trainer on crack- we ALL ( supporters, fans, bloggers and posters ) need to have a siege mentality to see this league over the line.

Having a quality team of players and money in the bank and being able to sell players to top clubs in England and France is a dagger through the heart of the press and SFA and golf and bowling clubs around the country…….
