Post-split fixture decision needs watching

357

The SPFL will determine post-split fixtures along established guidelines.  Celtic will face Newco on either match day 34 or 35, to avoid the possibility of a league decider between the teams.  With Hearts likely to lead the table going into the break, the usual metric changes.

The loser of the Celtic-Newco game could face Hearts when already out of contention for the top two slots.  If Celtic were out of contention, would we expect them to take on Hearts on the final day of the season at full strength?  Even without the prospect of denying Newco the title, Celtic would be a busted flush.  The same is true for Newco.  If they were out of the race, do you think there is a remote chance they would turn up at Tynecastle and collect the points that would deliver the title to Celtic?

Newco fans are likely to be as animated on this subject as we are.  They will remember a lacklustre Celtic defeat at home to Aberdeen, when the visitors needed a win to confirm finishing above Newco in 2018.  Some of us will remember the final game of the season in 1982, when if Celtic drew and Aberdeen beat Rangers by five goals, the title would go to the north east.  The Dons were 4-0 at the break, before news filtered through that Celtic had hit the goal trail.

These examples may be innocent results, but the SPFL must do itself a favour and take suspicion out of the equation.  Hearts, Celtic and Newco must play each other in the first two rounds of games. The SPFL cannot contrive a competitive advantage for one of the title contenders.

Hearts, Celtic, Newco, Motherwell, Hibs and Falkirk will make the top six.  This gives the League another headache, as all six cannot have 19 home and 19 away games.  The only fair solution is to give Hibs and Falkirk 20 home games.  This will mean an uneven number of home and away fixtures with Falkirk and Hibs for some clubs.

See the table below showing what games home/away the clubs are due to get and who they will play at each venue.  Teams in yellow are playing their third game of the season at that venue.  Hibs will have four home games post-split.

B78 – thanks for the recommendation, I’ll give it a look.

Enjoy your doubleheader weekend. Both games could go either way, but gun to head I expect France to shade it today and Celtic to shade it tomorrow.

Hopefully I’m wrong on both counts and Scotland win today and Celtic absolutely thrash them tomorrow.

    Fingers crossed.

If rugby reading is your thing, may I recommend No Borders by Tom English, an oral history of the Ireland team told by those who played. It’s superbly written.

  13. ARRIVING AT THE STADIUM

In the interests of safety, Celtic fans are requested to come to the match as early as possible. The event management plan developed by Police Scotland has changed since we last had the full end at the Broomloan Rd Stand.

Helen St is now closed completely for Celtic fans and should not be used, Police will redirect fans away from this area.

Supporters Coaches should park in Broomloan Rd & Broomloan Rd Coach Park, Coaches should approach from Govan Rd, Police will provide direction.

There is no car parking at all on Broomloan Rd, car parking is recommended in the side streets off Broomloan Rd in non-coned areas.

All fans will be searched on entry therefore the advice is to be at the Stadium in plenty of time to avoid delays and ensure they are in for kick off.

It has been recommended that fans start to arrive from 10:30 onwards as turnstiles will be open to facilitate early entry and avoid delays, please do not leave it late to arrive at the stadium as you may miss kick off.

I received a most welcome note tonight from Bernie, my sister. old Bernie. I love her and think she’s the greatest.

I am now convinced that the authorities intend to implement strict isolation soon, as I am having trouble in seeing my solicitor. I hope I’m wrong about the isolation, but we’ll see.

It’s only that I’d like to remain with the boys for as long as possible for many reasons. If I’m isolated, I will simply conquer it.

A priest was in today, somewhat pleasant, and told me about Brendan O Cathaoir’s article in The Irish Times during the week, which I saw. We had a bit of discussion on certain points, which, of course, were to him contentious. He was cordial in his own practised way, purely tactical, of course, and at the same time he was most likely boiling over inside, thinking of the reference to this week’s AP/RN (February 28th issue) calling him a collaborating middle-class nationalist, or appropriate words to that effect.

He is too, says I, and I sympathise with those unfortunate sons of God who find themselves battling against the poverty, disease, corruption, death and inhumanities of the missions.

I am 61 kgs today, going down. I’m not troubled by hunger pangs, nor paranoiac about anything pertaining to food, but, by God, the food has improved here. I thought I noticed that during the last hunger-strike. Well, there is a lot at stake here.

I got the Irish News today, but there’s nothing in it, that’s why I got it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the comrades at Mass tomorrow, all the younger looking faces, minus the beards, moustaches, long rambling untamed hair matted in thick clumps.

One thing is sure, that awful stage, of the piercing or glazed eyes, the tell-tale sign of the rigours of torture, won’t be gone – if it is ever removed. I wonder is it even conceivable that it could be erased from the mind?

We got a new comrade during the week. Isn’t it inspiring the comrades who keep joining us? I read what Jennifer said in court. (On being sentenced, Jennifer McCann said: ‘I am a Republican prisoner of war and at the moment my comrade Bobby Sands is on hunger-strike to defend my rights as a political prisoner.’) I was touched and proud, she is my comrade.

I’ve been thinking of Mary Doyle and Ellen McGuigan and all the rest of the girls in Armagh. How can I forget them?

The Screws are staring at me perplexed. Many of them hope (if their eyes tell the truth) that I will die. If need be, I’ll oblige them, but my God they are fools. Oscar Wilde did not do justice to them for I believe they are lower than even he thought. And I may add there is only one thing lower than a Screw and that is a Governor. And in my experience the higher one goes up that disgusting ladder they call rank, or position, the lower one gets…

It’s raining. I’m not cold, my spirits are well, and I’m still getting some smokes — decadence, well sort of, but who’s perfect. Bad for your health. Mar dheas anois, Oíche Mhaith.

  21. the long wait is over on

I don’t know if anyone else heard Souness on Off the Ball this afternoon.

He claimed that one of the reasons Rangers dropped off in the second half last week was because some of their players observe Ramadan ( I see the Sun have picked up on this and run a story with , unsurprisingly for that rag , no apparent fact checking or comment on accuracy)

A quick check seems to suggest that of the starters only Chermiti( who finished the game ) and Diomande ( who came on after 64 minutes ) would be affected.

    Bizarre claim.
