Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance

236

If Allan McGregor lives to be 100, I expect at that grand age, when he shuts his eyes, his mind will imagine the spectre of Reo Hatate hovering around the edge of the penalty area, preparing to shoot.  7 minutes in, the goalkeeper spilled Reo’s shot into the path of Tom Rogic, and Ibrox was shaken to its core.

Newco started well, forcing Celtic into nervous looking errors.  Josip Juranovic left space behind him that was exploited by Ryan Kent, who cutback for Alan Ramsay to score in the second minute.  The home side pressed high in the minutes that followed as Celtic struggled to break out of their defensive third.

When Hatate was given a second chance to find Daizan Maeda on the left, the break was on.  Callum McGregor drove deep into Newco territory, riding challenges from four opponents before releasing the ball into the heart of the box.  Rogic, then Hatate shot, before Rogic calmly turned the ball home.

Celtic settled into a pattern of defending and creating chances, they did both effectively.  Three minutes from the break, the Newco defence failed to deal with a free kick into the box.  The ball broke to Cameron Carter-Vickers who shot home from close range.

For me, the second half was never comfortable, I wanted Celtic to move further up-field, but they were content to protect their lead and break on the counter.  It was the perfect position for a team in the league driving seat to be.  In taking the lead so early, Newco had a genuine chance of winning the game and putting the title race on a knife edge.  In truth, they were just not good enough.

Substitute Liel Abada had the best two chances of the half, one forcing an excellent save from McGregor.  Joe Hart had one save of note in the entire match, he mostly collected trundling low percentage attempts.

The players all looked tired towards the end.  Giorgos Giakoumakis, in particular, ran himself into the ground.  After all our speculation on who would start alongside Callum McGregor in midfield, Rogic and Hatate were clearly the right choice.  Tom could have had a hattrick but did enough to see through what should be another title.

Nothing today on the thrown glass and bottles, the bizarre “Old Firm” branding or the long-term consequences of yesterday’s result, we’ll pick this up during the week.  Today is about Ange Postecoglou and his players magnificent performance and game management.

  1. I think the hun got to the advertising hoardings and had second thoughts… (probably saw that CCV is a bit bigger in real life) , either that or he was knackered

  2. Dogged Celtic performance yesterday and a counter attacking marvel !

Put the Sevco hoardes back in their box.

Was extremely worried about the possible lowlife antics of the r “ angers “ support and they played it true to form !

The Spartan Celts contingent were magic considering the missiles they were subjected to !

As for the bottle incidents this is exactly what happens when you have you have an organisation who play to tune of the mindless bigots associated with the Newco No marks ! They are answerable to no one apparently !

We stay focused ! Perth Saints on Saturday will not be easy as they are scrapping for their lives ! We must take advantage and go 9pts clear and see how they react at New St Mirren park !

A Braga battering and a Paisley pumping would be nice 😉

The picture at Ipox in the Spartim 700 section with a floating wheelchair of the Ironside CSC made me smile this morning also !

The auld Brigade will know what I mean 😉

    Hail Hail !

AN TEARMANN – My post was written as a thank you to newco who, having done such a great job in the Europa League, were now handing over all the rewards to us. It was tongue in cheek. I did reply a bit later to clarify and say I was not in the least offended a being pulled up.

He was spot on. I did assume that them getting to the last 16 each year was the main reason we were getting automatic entry to group stages. I stood corrected.

Aw I know where you were coming from too Deniabhoy and was thinking I would have to do a bit of research(as we know Der hun dont do truth:-)into the coefficient make up for europe. In recent weeks the meeja build up would have you believe dif so was glad there was a good tim who had already done so,for us both in 18yardman

Tam sellic son on twitter thanked them for plating up the CL money for us :-)))) I went to find it and found this little ditty.funny tl BTW.:-)).

Hope all good down your way.

  4. We are approaching the end of, what we all now expect to be, a successful season. It is somewhat unexpected when we look back at the faltering start, ponder the seemingly never-ending list of injuries, and factor in how many new signings had to be ‘bedded-in”.

It is also the end of the beginning of Ange’s tenure. It seems he has been balancing multiple plates all season. He has never been too up, or, too down in the process, and amazingly has yet to field his best starting eleven.

If all falls into place, he will be able to plan properly in the close season. He will have the time and the money to re-shape and strengthen. I expect many goings and maybe half a dozen comings.

Just a quick mention on the ‘carry-on’ at Ibrox. If a televised UEFA match was stopped to clear up the glass thrown on to the field with the intention to maim, what would be the punishment? Definitely a big fine and probably the closure of a stand, or, indeed the stadium, for the next match(es). There is no strict liability in Scottish football, which means little, or, no, punishment from SPFL/SFA. There will be a token police investigation which might convict a couple, but that will be it.

The consequential fallout of a barren season at Ibrox, both financially and in terms of its support, will be fascinating to watch over the summer.

In case you haven’t seen this view, it is superb

Two thoughts – why is Rogic’s first goal celebration so understated? Unusual for him.

  7. Not getting any work done today at all.

Just cant stop watching highlights/ goals etc.

Loving the players at the end dodging missiles and laughing at the thems and loving Bain (and whoever is next to him, cant see his face) at the second goal, immediately turn round to celebrate in true GIRUY fashion.

  8. Didn’t English pen a mangled Wim Jansen obituary for the BBC? Where he listed the people Jansen had fallen out with at Celtic, even quoting some of their grievances and using words such as “sinister”….in an obituary.

I’m afraid the man has no class, so I won’t be paying attention to any of his work.

‘Did Walker not say to McCoist ‘when’s Rangers penalty’ and all we got from him was silence 😂😂’

    ••••••••••••

Except that that it not true.

McCoist laughed after Walker had asked about the penalty.

Then McCoist laughingly said “I hope its soon Andy.”

To which Walker and McCoist laughed together.

Thing is, isn’t amazing how twisted folk from that other blog quickly become??

That is apart from the legendary Big Packy 1, and JimTheTim53 of course. 👍👍

Adding: I think we were advised to tone down our celebrations down and focus on the win.

Entitlement and ignorance are a dangerous combination – Trump anyone? 😳

We’ll played bhoys – eyes on the prize.

  11. have we as a club refused to allow thems 700 entry into Celtic Park due to safety concerns for our players and supporters for the last Glasgow derby of the season yet.

Just about recovered from the excesses of yesterday’s celebrations. Kitty O’Shea’s was still bouncing at 6pm when I left.

The second half was torture but that just made the final whistle all the sweeter as joy mixed with relief during wild celebrations that spilled on to the street.

Now the pressure is off and we can enjoy the climax to the season. That does not mean I believe it’s done and dusted, but with a 6(7) points advantage, the players and the supporters can look forward to each game with renewed confidence and greatly diminished pressure.

    Beautiful Sunday.

  15. Great weekend spent in the company of good Tim’s.

Fiirstly at the Crown Plazza on Saturday and yesterday in the presence of a former Captains dad, son and brother in law (and friends😊) rounded off nicely by that nervy battling win at Ibrox.

That’s two OldFirm games in a row that Walker and McCoist have been co commentators, and I have to say that it almost seems as though they have cancelled out each others sleekitry.

The game in February when we won 3-0 McCoist was surprisingly, 100% correct with his comments, and his presence seemed to force Walker’s usual, cheap, snidey, demeaning, anti-Celtic commentary out of him.

Listen to Walker revert back to his sleekit, snideness, when McCoist isn’t his his co commentator.

    Walker must say to himself…

“McCoist is more sleekit than me so I had better sling my hook when I work with him!” 😉

P.S. It is still an OldFirm game until Celtic supporters SACK the PLC and install a new executive that WON’T go along with the Same Club Lie. 👍

Kris Boyd said before the game yesterday that if rangers lose the league is over, and then at full time he backed it up when asked if that was it he said Yes its definitely over. Stan Petrov wasn’t so sure . James McFadyen agreed with KB. Was looking forward to seeing KB squirming – but nothing at all, he just glumly conceded that it was all over.

    This does sound reasonable…

“There are two versions of Rangers right now. There’s the Rangers in Europe, where they go up against, and beat, teams that they’re not really expected to beat. This season, in the Europa League, they’re revelling wonderfully in their guise of scalp-taking underdogs.

Then there’s the domestic Rangers who exist in a pressure cooker. Expectation is on them like a deadweight on their shoulder – and they haven’t coped that well. Celtic, recast dramatically under Ange Postecoglou, have asked questions and Rangers have found no answers.”

  24. One thing was noticeable yesterday, the physical nature of Celtic’s tackling. Some very hefty challenges you would not normally associate with the team and it worked. Nir Bitton looked the coolest dude on the pitch when he came on. Played very well, calmed things down and was ready to light the cigar amid the mayhem.

  25. Celtic had 13 fouls against. Sevco only 7.

I know I might be seen as the Tom Engliss Fan Club Secretary but as one who has always felt that he is a fine writer but not impartial, I felt I should provide a link to this reasonable piece:

    ——-

I am not the treasurer of the TEFC, but I concur. It is a fair piece and well-written. Let’s always ‘play the ball'(the actual issues) and not ‘the man’ – it’s called civility, and without it we’d constantly live in a war-zone.

Just to put the proverbial ‘cat among the pigeons’, Bill Leckie’s latest offering is worth a read too, as many of his previous. He & English are not anyone’s sycophants, and unless you are of the opinion that ‘we’ get everything right, everytime, are always worth a read. I can take justified praise & criticism on any matter from a serious journalist – there are precious few in Scotland; English & Leckie are within that few.
