Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

1020

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

What exactly do you want to know about the old Celtic.

Let me start at the beginning though so we don’t waste both our time.

Once upon a time the Clann an Gorta Mor in Scotland were dying because the were starving to death.

A football club was born to ease their suffering, that club as called Celtic.

They never played for glory they played for bread.

jackie mac, I’m sure you know the history since thence.

I leave Everything up to God to sort out. If Celtic take a wrong turn, I know God will correct it, it may take Time, but he will re-awaken people, he always gets peoples attention, if it is required.

Materialism is a real danger to every highly paid person at Celtic Park. I have no information about anything to do with Celtic, I’ve not got the ear of anyone but I see a Celtic Football Club that is Confident, Assured and definitely going in the right direction. The initiatives to help others should be expanded and the benefits will multiply over Time.

I have No Fear of the new Rangers coming back, especially if they still have the same vitriolic attitude to everything and anyone.

They have been fully exposed, so unless they are genuinely apologetic, doesn’t look good so far, they will be nothing but cannon fodder for a True Giant of World Football, Glasgow Celtic.

Enjoy the Celtic and dinnae worry too much about the future, it will take care of itself.

My post at 15.21 had some comments to support why I have that opinion.

My post to A stor at 17.05 elaborates on that.

For me, there is ample circumstantial and logical evidence for my view, but it is only my view. There are too many unknowns to be absolutely certain of anything. Opinions are not facts, they are a combination of so much that is a variable for each of us. If I hear the phrase “it was the referees opinion” when a decision goes against Celtic once more…

I will paraphrase a post of yours to ‘you cant clean rust’ the other day…

I am happy with what our board have done in general terms, but they are not perfect and have and will make mistakes.

I agree with that sentiment, and I have yet to see any evidence that implicates our board in anything unsavoury. Some people draw conclusions from the lack of public utterances while others draw conclusions from a statement made by DD when them went bust. I read his statement differently because he wasn’t talking to Celtic fans, he was talking to those who would destroy us. What was he supposed to say when faced with such a question with scribes recording everything he said and happy to use it to attack us. Anything else would have made both he and Celtic the (negative) story, whereas the only people who get animated about it now are Celtic fans. It was PR masterstroke that ridiculed the question and the subject because it was so full of ridiculous hyperbole. The issue went away immediately.

I know that profitability, or more correctly sustainability is not only important but absolutely essential for the future of Celtic. Celtic are sustainable without them. While I compromise some of my aspirations because of that factor, I stop well short of leaping to conclusions that implicate Celtic in some direct collusion to bring back the tribute act. By the very nature of their position and business in the SPL and their membership of the SFA, they have to be constrained in some way from speaking as bluntly as some of us do about the injustice and lack of transparency involved.

I despise the labels that are given to protagonists from either camp on here. We are all Celtic fans (mostly) and diverse opinion is at the heart of the Celtic tradition. I support the questioning of officers at the AGM but know that these events are largely stage managed. We have discovered that we have been justifiably paranoid about how we were treated in the past, and I suspect that when some time has passed we will find more evidence of currently unkown skulduggery in this saga.

In the meantime, I will give our club the benefit of any doubt that might exist. I think they deserve that, but that’s just my view. As far as I know the only person to make money out of Celtic in recent memory was Fergus, but his tenure changed forever how our boards would do business for Celtic.

    Sorry for the ramble there.

Ambrose: There is magic in Paradise..

EFE Ambrose is delighted that Celtic will resume domestic duties on Saturday with a home game against St Johnstone following their heart-breaking UEFA Champions League defeat to AC Milan.

For the Nigerian defender reckons there´s magic in Paradise and that it will instantly restore self-belief among the players as they look to make a quick return to winning ways.

“We have put that behind us and are looking forward to the rest of games coming up,” he said. “First and foremost, tomorrow´s game is the most important. We want to keep improving and getting better as a team and individually to see where we can go from there.

“After playing AC Milan away we´re lucky to be playing at home, and it will bring our confidence and motivation back because playing at Celtic Park always brings magical things to us.”

Celtic dominated the Italian giants for long periods in the San Siro and Ambrose feels the Scottish champions can take plenty of encouragement from their performance.

“The team is not going backwards as we created the chances but never scored and that´s something we should work on,” he said. “In Europe you have to create your chances and make good use of them.

“After what they saw, Milan believed that Celtic gave them a good fight and deserved a point or a win from the game. But at the end, all that mattered to them was the three points. We just have to come back home, prepare well and see if we can get through the group.”

Another of the positives to emerge from Italy was the defensive display of Ambrose and summer signing Virgil Van Dijk, who look to be forming an excellent pairing in the heart of the Celtic backline.

“Both of us want to learn,” said Ambrose. “I believe Virgil coming here has been good for him and the team. He´s quite tactical and his passing is good.

“The most important thing is the combination between both of us, which is good, and we understand each other from the little time we have played together. The confidence the manager has given to both of us has also helped us a lot.”
