Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

1020

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

  1. Reminds me of BMCUW dragging me to the pub opposite Bath Railway Station for a 4 min pint – dragging me to Platform 1 at Bath to catch the train to Swindon (notice I was dragged everywhere! This drinking malarkey was alien to me ! ). Then two of us on the train opposite some young bolshey English student (who we both liked – he had serious attidude, which is brilliant and important ! ). So of course the conversation was on Celtic most of the way :))))

Then we had a pint in the Station Bar, a game of pool.

BMCUW is amongst the finest company you could hope to be in.

In all seriousness, if someone asked me, who would you want at a “dinner table”? I’d say, feck the dinner table, I want A Stor Kitalalba, BMCUW, Petec, MWD, Jimbo67, ACGR, 16 Roads, VP and HT and the rest, just to sit down and clink glasses. Legends all, and the ones I missed out. These are just some of the fellas I met.

Would be good if all of us could meet up and have a wee swally and chat.

    Especially on a fool moon.

I think some underestimate the importance of that……

  2. Good afternoon from a beautiful, hot and sunny Gold Coast.

I have just wasted an hour of my life trying to buy merchandise from the Official Celtic Online Superstore. I picked out a couple of shirts and other goods amounting to just under 200 quid.

When I went to the checkout, I had to set up a new account, which I duly did, registering my email address and setting a password. Upon submitting, the same screen kept re-appearing, inviting me to set up a new account, which I did another 3 or 4 times before giving up.

I even tried logging in as an existing customer using the credentials I had used to create an account, but all I got was . . . not a valid login id.

What a complete waste of time.

Oh well, at least it has saved me about $320, which will now be spent elsewhere.

Maybe the website doesn’t work during the hours of darkness.

  3. FFM (aka, I’m the only conspiracy theorist in the village) –

Does not giving “two hootenannays” include not wanting my money? I doubt it.

It’s sheer incompetence. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have no appetite for turning it into a world conspiracy just to bring some excitement into your existence.

    Javelin!

TSD, this is the last post ever I’ll direct to you.

Thanks for saving my archive it’s good to know you’ve read my posts when I routinely ignored yours.

I thank you for reminding me of the posts you recovered from your archives and posted above, I’m chuffed to see them aired again.

You never quite got the anagram detector working though did you.

Goodbye arsehole and goodnight, I’ve a Celtic game to go to tomorrow.

    Thanks

On the rainbow laces, we are a club “open to all”, so we should be in the forefront of promoting this initiative.

Statistically, one or two of the Lisbon Lions were gay.

    Although I don’t reckon Ronnie Simpson was – see, I’ve just started a witch-hunt.

Kitalba, it was a pleasure speaking with you. Get your support behind canamalars resolution and make your kids Celtic shareholders.

    They’ll love it.

    Penguin Biscuits

In the late 60’s and early 70’s my Ma would buy a six packet of chicolate Penguin biscuits. Usually only one had a green wrapper so a fight usually ensued between me and 4 other brothers for the green one. The green one did taste better – Fact

  10. SmashingMilkBottles:

Jinks! I’ve just come back from getting my lottery ticket and as I was driving up the road I was just thinking “I hope Smashin and his much, much, better half, enjoyed their stay and got home safe. Now you post at that time of the Mearns morn… spooky!!!

Thanks for being a mate, mate. If CRC would be so kind AS to pass it onto Vhman, I’d be obliged to both of you.

    I owe you a beer.

I should really be out working in the garden today, went a wee bit mental with the chain saw during the week and now I’ve got more stumps to give me blisters on my spine; but on my way to the garage to get my beaten tools, as I passed a bottle of Koonunga Hill, on a spur of the moment, impulsive rather than considered, whim, I accidently, without meaning to or giving it any conscious thought at all, took the top off and let the air in; now the garden can wait, I’m going to watch FFM’s straight man movie before a riot of mad Tims invade my wee patch tonight.

I’d imagine you’ll be at the game today, I hope you enjoy it and no winding up stray huns on the corpie buses either; that just isn’t nice and you’d never catch me doing such.

If I remember well it was Kevin that started the corpy bus sing-a-long

We just had to join in.

Sleeping pattern still out hence posting at this dark hour….

Going to game and heading to McChuills after for post match debate and also how to rid your garden of tree stumps…

  12. I’ve been thinking, we haven’t had a wee poll on here for ages. Neither have we had a songs debate like the old days with the bold Kano to the fore. I wonder how Kano is doing these days. Ah! out of sight out of mind.

Songs debate, wee poll. Wee poll, songs debate. Heads – songs debate, tails – wee poll.

    Best of three.

But nothing in life is more important than crème de la crème cheeeeeeeeeeeese on toast.

Then again nobody has posted the ’40 honest mistakes’ for a wee while. That and the FF banned list usually get a few in the mood.

So what’s it going to be a poll? A songs debate? Cheese on toast? The 40 Honest Mistakes? The FF Banned List?

Whoa! stop right there, you guys are slipping, you almost forgot the smug and statistical happy clapping versus mean and nasty mineshafters debate. Now that was very naughty of you all. Where’s the naughty stool? How many naughty stools are there?

    Poll?

    Songs debate?

    Say cheese?

    40 Honest Mistakes?

    FF Banned List?

    Smug and statistical?

    Mean and nasty?

Or what about one that hasn’t EVER been aired with passion…

    5 way agreement/SPL side letter.

I know, it never happened, it is just a fickle figment of paranoid Tims minds. Or is it.

Maybe we should take a poll on it.

  17. Top of the morning to you all from a mostly still-dark Fife, but where the light is starting to come in the sky looks still, and no sign of rain clouds.

A good day for the game it would seem and hopefully a good performance against a St Johnstone team that usually play hard against us (who doesn’t).

There are signs that this squad has the makings of a good one. Pity about Forrest and hope he gets better soon.

Spoke to my nephew and he is coming to mine on Sunday to sign up for canamalar’s resolution so that is two I have fixed up.

Off out for a walk when it gets light and then buy Baynes’ rolls and home for a fried breakfast. Have got white-pudding today, which I also use to make bread with.

Pink painted buttermilk clouds over most of the sky in the east is a sight to see.
