Pot 4, decline of the Spanish empire

A cursory look at our fellow pot 4 Champions League teams shows the extent of the challenge.  Six of the eight teams lost: Steaua Bucharest (3-0), Austrian Vienna (0-1), Celtic (2-0), Real Sociedad (0-2), Plzen (0-3), Anderlecht (2-0).

Copenhagen got one of the better results of the night, a 1-1 draw at home to Italian champions, Juventus, while Napoli, who split Juve and Milan in the Italian league last season, but are still a pot 4 team, recorded the only bottom tier win, a 2-1 victory over last season’s finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

Napoli are in a different category than the rest but Celtic are in with a decent chance of out-performing others from pot 4.

Sociedad’s home reversal to Shakhter Donetsk, who are going through a rebuilding process was a shock, but Valencia’s 0-3 Europa League defeat to Swansea indicates a worrying scenario for Spanish football below the uber-indebted Barca and Real Madrid.  As a general rule, anything which undermines one of the economically powerful football nations should be welcomed by those disenfranchised by the size of their TV market (that’s us).

Shakhtar Karagandy put in a credible performance before going down 2-1 in Greece, a far better showing than Elfsborg’s 4-0 collapse in Salzburg.  Best of luck to the Kazaks.

I’ve been going to the football long enough to remember black players being booed whenever they touched the ball.  The phenomenon seemed to arrive here in the late 70s and faded around a decade later, although such is human nature I don’t think complacency is appropriate.  Homophobia is a different matter.

‘Out’ gay footballers are so rare I don’t know what the reaction would be at a match but the crowd-bullying phenomenon which can exist in the game makes any minority vulnerable.  The first step is to explain to the hard-of-thinking what they are doing, and the error of their ways.

Can rainbow coloured laces change the world?  Stonewall have distributed rainbow coloured laces to every player in the UK, asking them to wear them this weekend.  We’ll not see the WAGs acronym become WAGSABAH overnight but it feels like an appropriate, colourful, first step.

Keep reaching for that rainbow, Celtic.

  6. I know there are some on here who think I’m a wee bit slow, maybe in intellectual terminology… thick as a raxor

but who on here can, in laymans terms, explain the ‘FIVE WAY AGREEMENT’ and the subsequent ‘ SPL SIDE LETTER’, and of course, I don’t need anybody to reassure me that Celtic battled to level the playing field at every opportunity.

Oh! for the love of God… how lucky am I, look, over there, a big humungous sand dune and not a single mugs head buried in it yet.

    Feck aff that’s ma dune.

  7. A stor

    No. IMHO they didn’t know

The fact that this alleged agreement finishes up with the disclaimer that the deal is off if it gets out – suggests to me that Celtic were unaware of it. How could Sevco possibly sign up to such an agreement if Celtic were privy to it? They would be allowing themselves to become hostages to Celtic.

” In the event that Sevco shall by itself, its officers, employees or agents, except incircumstances expressly permitted by this letter, fail to keep and maintain the existence of this letter, the terms hereof and/or the Undertaking in the strictest confidence or Sevco shall purport to assignthe benefit of all or part of this letter and/or the Undertaking the SPL shall be entitled by notice inwriting to Sevco to terminate the benefit of this letter and the Undertaking. ”

If I follow your thinking correctly it would mean a choice between two conspiracies.

The first that Celtic conspired with the signatories to this Undertaking, for which there is no evidence.

The second that these signatories conspired between themselves to cook the books in favour of Sevco, for which there is ample evidence. Not only with this alleged document, but from all the other deals that were brokered/proposed/accepted/rejected since this scandal broke. EG Shoe-horning them into the SPL – a poroposal that Celtic opposed.

  10. Greendreamz……….totally agree with you, it’s called building a team, doesn’t happen overnight, might take years but it will eventually happen, although we lost in Milan, you could see we were clearly the better team, they got the rub of the green, it could easily been us, the most important part from Wednesday night is we competed in every area of the pitch, that will bring confidence to the players, the backroom team are also learning, perhaps a drop into the Europa cup would help us, I firmly believe we could win that trophy, I personally at this moment in time would prefer to do that, anybody with any thoughts on this.

RANGERS are being investigated by the Procurator Fiscal after allegations of fraud.

The bombshell news follows information and evidence of alleged wrongdoing which I can reveal was handed to the Serious Fraud Office in London this week.

They have no jurisdiction in Scotland, but senior figures in the Serious Fraud Office were sufficiently impressed by the nature of the evidence and details in the complaint that they immediately contacted the Procurator Fiscal’s office in Glasgow.

Now the Fiscal has called for a full police probe into these extremely serious and wide ranging allegations and senior officers will now interview the Rangers executive directors who were responsible for the share issue last December, plus certain transactions which took place earlier this year in the aftermath of the Imran Ahmad, Charles Green and Brian Stockbridge launched IPO which saw Rangers quoted on the Stock Exchange.

The IPO raised £22.5M which financial director Stockbridge, the only one of that trio who is still on the board, has admitted is now all gone.

I understand that the Procurator Fiscal-ordered-investigation will focus on certain transactions which came in the wake of that £22.5M being raised, transactions which helped drain that huge cash injection and reduce it to zero in a matter of months.

The news that the Rangers books could be seized by the police with financial director Stockbridge, former chief executive Charles Green and ex commercial director Imran Ahmad facing a grilling, possibly under caution, will undermine the current board’s bid to stay in place.

For the police probe into these serious allegations will almost certainly still be under way when the current crop of directors, including financial director Stockbridge, are forced to offer themselves to the shareholders for election at the Annual General Meeting which must now take place no later than October 31st.

Not suggesting that Celtic knew in advance about this side letter, but how does one account for the lack of comment on this matter from any of the (supposedly) non-signatory clubs … ?

For (assuming its authenticity) the import of the letter is colossal and, one would think, contains grounds for action by those not privy to its signing …

Turkeybhoy-I thought Pukki’s jersey last week was a size too small !! Maybe he goes for the streamlined look :} I posted last night that Pukki,Derk,Biton and Rogic need real game time now if we are going to try and change, and hopefully improve the team.20 minutes here and there is not enough.

Yep,and hopefully we will see them all in the next two-three games.Want to see Stokes,Pukki together for at least these games.

Do you think we could get the “Fashion police”job on here?.

  20. Greendreamz – What do you base this comment on?

“Puuki on the evidence so far is already a better footballer than Hooper will ever be and will score as many goals as Hooper every season”

I hope you’re right but I’m surprised at how you can make this comment based on what we have seen so far. I’ve seen a few other similar comments as well so not having a go at you here. With his limited playing time so far, Pukki has not had an opportunity to show he can live up to such a bold statement.

The whole of sport is being shafted…………………………………

let me say that again for the intellectually challenged like myself….

and a club of the stature and integrity of Celtic stays silent when all around deceit weaves…

Well either Celtic are playing a Machiavellian mother of Champions League away games or Celtic are meekly complicit in sectarian, and often brutal, status quo.

I pray it is the former.
